Watching Program As Its Recording

Watching Program As Its Recording

Hey all! I just picked up a Flex4K earlier this week and paired it with a 4TB WD Portable Spinning Harddrive I had sitting on a shelf.

It's been fun poking around and playing with it, but I have a question.

My main reason for this setup is actually holiday programing. Specifically the Macy's Day Parade. Family gets together to watch it, and while we can stream it, it's the East Coast broadcast so I have to get up early and hit pause and hope no one cancels it mid watch to be able to start it when we want. People also tend to show up late...

My question is when I watch a recording from start WHILE IT IS ACTIVELY RECORDING, can this cause issues? In my limited testing, it doesn't seem like it. Tuning to the channel I can't go backwards, but watching it from the recorded section I am able to. And once I catch up to where it was "live" when I started watching, it just keeps going. This is perfect.

Is there a risk I have here of corrupting the recording? Any downsides? I don't want to be the one who spoils a holiday this year with my "fancy" gadgets 😂

Roku User Tablo VS HDHomeRun OTA TV

Update: I purchased a HDHomerun Flex 4K. While there are a few bugs or features that I'm not the biggest fan of some of the ways it works, they seem to be very involved in the community from what I can find and am , and I think that deserves to be rewarded, not to mention it does seem like a superior / at least equal product.

Hi all!

I put up an antenna in my attic a few months back, so we could catch some misc live sports and holiday events (think Macy Day Parade). I have it running to a single TV in the house. I'm not interested in doing a splitter and running a cable to each TV/Room, but I am interested in upgrading to a network device to allow the use of it for the other TVs, as it would be nice to throw the news on in the background or something.

I am split between the Tablo 4 Tuner and either the HDHomeRun Quatro or 4k flex. Not that I need 3.0, but I figure if I'm going to spend money, it's not that much more. I'm in Sacramento CA.

I see mixed reviews on both on the Roku side. I actually was able to borrow both devices from a friend and was able to get all my Roku TVs and Sticks (one old stick in the garage was weird, but looks like it's a codec issue and a $15 fix) to work with the apps.

I actually prefer the interface of the HDHomeRun, but I think my wife may like the Tablo interface better.

Some other notes:

-I do plan to DVR, however not via plex or a nas, just going to USB an SSD into whichever one

-I do not mind paying $35 a year for the 2 week program, I also do not mind my data being sold (I know, crazy)

-I do not plan to watch on a laptop/computer, just TVs and phones.

-Outside of 2-3 live events a year, most of our use will probably actually be via the DVR.

I have watched every video I can find on them, and still can't seem to make a decision 😂. Are the tuners about equal? Am I way overthinking this (I am actually).

Anything I am not considering?

Xfinity overhead cable drop loose in backyard (Non-Customer)

Hi all,

I was working yesterday and heard a "thump" randomly just outside of my home office (my utilities drop right outside my office window). I went outside, and noticed the Xfinity drop to my house ripped out of where it was anchored.

The cable is now hanging low enough that while I can still walk under it, I can now touch it with my arm up (a good 5-8 feet lower than it was before at its lowest point). It is still hanging from the house, but I'd not supported by a single plastic coax support on the siding...

We don't use Xfinity, as we have ATT Fiber, as well as a T-Mobile 5g backup, and I just don't need the 3rd service.

I tried calling the 800 number twice, and both times after being on hold for 30 or so minutes from the machine, it randomly just hung up.

I'm not a customer, so I can't reach out other ways. Any idea how to get ahold of someone and what exactly to ask for? Id prefer them to just remove the drop, the utility pole is in my backyard even, but I would settle for them reattaching it to the proper re-enforced facia/rafter mount, which I don't think this old one was. Not sure, we just moved into this house a few months ago.

1st world problem screen on startup

Hi all, I finished my BC250 build over the weekend, and have been loving it. 20ish hours logged between my wife and I so far, and it is a massive upgrade from my steam deck.

My wife has been complaining about the little text screens as it's starting up. It starts up fine, and doesn't bother me, but she has mentioned it to me each time she turns it on 😂.

Is there anyways I can turn this off, so it just shows the Bazzite boot up screen vs this white text (not even sure what it's called).

I'm using the handheld steam deck version of Bazzite. I did update the bios to the 3.0 one to adjust ram and fan curve, but have not overclocked or anything like that.

Thanks!

Booting Straight Into Bazzite Big Picture Mode?

Hi all,

I just got my BC250 build all set up today, with the new Bios flash and Bazzite installed.

I want my wife to be able to use this easily in the living room when I'm not around as well. She's use to my Steam deck docked, but a few things are going to definitely give her problems (as well as me).

2 things I have ran into:

  1. It password locks Everytime on reboot, this requiring a keyboard, anyway I can get it where I don't have to log into the computer each time?

  2. It boots into the Desktop mode... I put on the Bazzite downloader that I wanted it to start in big picture mode... Any settings I'm missing? While it's not a huge deal to hit, it again requires a keyboard and I'm trying to keep this as controller only as possible.

Thanks!

Build Recommendatioms for a Newbie

Hi all!

I game fully on my Steam Deck, usually docked to a TV (9.9/10 times I play). I had been excited for the steam machine until like most, I saw the price. I had been looking at these Bc-250s for about 6-8 months now on and off (should've bought one a while ago haha). I'm not a computer guy, but do some minor electronics/networking work through my Ham Radio Hobby, so I figured this would be a fun project.

Well, I just bought one on AliExpress for the $130ish mark. I'm in the US so it'll take a few days to get here, but I want to order the rest of the parts so I can get moving and figure out how big of an SSD I can afford 😂. (Man, SSD prices have gotten bad).

Now I'm trying to figure out the rest of the setup. I found this case/hardware guide, and I really like the design. It uses a 300 watt PSU, and the stock cooler, and I like the form factor. That being said, from what I have been reading, 300 watts seems low in some people's opinion. Any recommendations or thoughts for or against this case before I start printing it?

Best Steam Machine Mini PC replacement for me?

A little bit about me: I game exclusively on my Steam Deck. Mostly docked on my TV, and I think it works fine. More power would be nice, but it plays everything I want and more.

My wife has been slowly getting into a few games that aren't available on her switch, like Coral Island. Sometimes we share, which is fine.

I've been excited about the steam machine, and I'm not even super upset over the price (I would have loved it to be $700, but I get the market). I think having a "console" in the living room would be great for us.

As I've been looking more into it, and thinking more on it, since I am so happy with the performance of the steam deck, I'm debating if getting a mini PC with 680m graphics. Looking online, it should match (if not mildly exceed) the performance of the steam deck.

Am I super far off, or missing something? I can get a 680m mini PC with a terabyte of storage for about $500 now. Vs the steam machine would cost me about $1100 whenever it's my turn in line. I know the steam machine would be vastly better, but I'm already more than happy... And I wouldn't hate saving $600.

Would it be worth going 780m for another $200 or so?

HD Home Run (Which one to get?)

Hi all! I recently have had my antenna installed and we are watching more and more OTA TV, right now, I just have the antenna running to my living room TV, but I think I want to do a gateway.

We are a Roku house, for what it's worth. I also have Ethernet ran all over. I'm in Sacramento, CA area.

I'm looking at getting the HD Homerun, but have a few questions.

  1. should I get the one with ATSC 3.0? I know we have it in Sac, but to my understanding, it has DRM. I could get the 4 tuner 1.0 version, and I know this needs a crystal ball, but is the 3.0 that I can't use worth the extra $50 now in case something changes in the future? Or should I save that $50 to get whatever the new good one is then? How fast does OTA tech move? Haha.

  2. is there a con to going 4 tuner vs 2 tuner besides price? I don't think we'll use more than 2, but I think I want the flexibility.

  3. I'm seeing conflicting info online, I know they have a $35 a year subscription for DVR and TV guide, but I saw some places that said you can still record, and got 3 days of TV Guide for free? That would work plenty for us and our use case personally, and I can always subscribe if I find otherwise. Can someone clarify? Recording is a huge plus for us, and a main reason to go gateway.

  4. for recording? How many hours roughly of 1080 would get recorded on a 500gb SSD? I'm not looking for a huge media library, but grabbing new episodes of current shows and holding them for a week or two until we get to them would be nice, as well as being able to record some things like Macy's day parade, to start at our will vs trying to make sure we are up on time. Pausing would be great as well haha.

Thanks in advance!

Antenna Upgrade!

Finally caved and upgraded my $30 cheapy antenna to an Antennas Direct Element antenna paired with a Televes 560383 Pre-Amp, and my VHF channels are finally stable. Before they were choppy about 1/3rd of the time, and scannable but just a black image the other 2/3rds of the time. Realistically I think the Pre-Amp is what made the difference, as I just replaced a Log Periodic style Antenna with another one, but this one is much beefier.

Originally installed the antenna to just watch a few reality TV show finales live, some misc holiday programing (Macy's day parade, new Year's Eve, etc) but we have been using it more and more, so figured I would spend the money.

Eventually I will probably grab a Tablo or HD Homerun, but haven't gone that far yet... Haha.

Sacramento CA area and receiving all the major channels.

Has anyone used the Televes 560383 Amplifier?

Anyone have experience with the Televes 560383?

Its on the Antenna Mans recommended list on Amazon and looks very interesting. I have some decent UHF signals but a few VHF signals that are a little iffy depending on the day, so the separate amplification levels seems like a good idea. I also have it running to a TV with about 50 feet of coax, so I'm sure I'm losing some stability in that as well.

Looking online, there's really not much out there on it besides a few videos and threads compared to some other models.

Anyone have experience with it? Good, bad, indifferent? Price point for $80, is there a different one I should look at?

What to get?

Hi all, my wife mentioned she wanted to go to Dave and Busters this weekend in CA. We're looking at Saturday for sometime between 2-4 hours. Is it just easiest to get the $60 per person eat and play? That's unlimited, and comes with food... How many tickets do you typically go through in a hour as a couple? Especially if you're enjoying, not ticket farming haha.

Assuming sharing a $60 unlimited pass wouldn't work for 2 person games?

Wyze Duo Doorbell No Events Detected

Does anyone have a problem with the Wyze Duo Doorbell detecting events? I have mine hardwired, and is about 10 feet from a WiFi Access Point, so signal is good. I also am subscribed to the premium stuff.

We use to get notifications and events detected, no it never detected anything, but our other cameras do.

Any suggestions? I've done everything but factory reset it, which I will if I have to, but I'd prefer not to.
