Always learning more about my abilities

Just like many of us I’m always learning new things about my abilities or lack thereof. One thing that makes my brain tired is activities where I have to coordinate between my hands, and I’ve used cooking as an example- like chopping things or cooking on a skillet. Well tonight I had to put together some gift baskets, and Whats with all the fussy two handed work like tying ribbon, or curling the curling ribbon, by the time I was done I was just pooped. So more than cooking, the exacting, varied coordination between my hands really took it out of me. Didn’t even think about it going in, but I definitely know now!

My local Canes refuses to give me what I order

I go to Cane’s about once a month. Every time I order, I ask for two sandwiches and an order of fries. Every time, without asking, the receipt says: sandwich combo no drink, and sandwich only. The problem is that you get less than half the fries as part of the combo as you do when you get a side of fries. It’s infuriating.

Just curious- anyone else here have way more ocular migraines post stroke?

I’ve had ocular migraines since I was a teenager, but my pace in recent years has been two or three a year. Since my (53m) hemmorhagic stroke seven months ago, I’ve averaged two to three ocular migraines per week. They’re fairly mild and pass quickly, and don’t even really come with any pain. (Shoutout to actual migraine sufferers- I know those can be a real bitch to deal with!). I’m frankly not even sure if they know what causes ocular migraines. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar.

I feel like I should be mad about this but…meh.

Was reading in another sub just now (Stupid People Facebook) and someone posted a particularly incoherent post they found. Within the replies were “Is this what having a stroke feels like?” and “I think he had several strokes right there”. I may or may not have said something similar before I had my stroke (and have said something similar once since having my stoke, to great comic effect). Should we, collectively, get angry at these types of comments, or should we just be mindful about not letting our blood pressure spike? Do we constitute a potentially protected group or are these comments just funny?

First movie post stroke: Disclosure Day in IMAX

As the title says….
All in all a really good movie (no spoilers I promise). Main take-aways
- it was LOUD. The previews particularly. Wasn’t sure I was going to make it through just from the previews. But then the movie itself was so jam packed with action the the volume wasn’t too distracting
- trigger warning: there’s a brief scene that includes a brain scan (couldnt tell if it was ct or mri- I had both in the hospital, and don’t really remember them). For me, getting a ct scan was kind of the highlight of my day- the inflatable cushion was warm and comfy, I got new ceilings to look at, and I generally enjoyed the change of pace. Now theres nothing particularly jarring about that scene in the movie, but it is against a background of fast paced stress (basically for me the whole movie was fast paced stress, and if I’d seen the movie before having ct or mri’s, the actual experience may have been more stressful.
All in all, highly recommend. Ten thumbs up!
Don’t know if I’ll see the Odesey tho

Pothole fixed after 36 hours

There was a pothole on a street near me for 3+ weeks. After driving through it several times, I used the city’s see click fix app and it was fixed by the end of the next day. It took 30 seconds. Highly recommend.

Has anyone tried this Mingleo?

I keep getting ads on Facebook for this Mingleo service that says it will set you up at a dinner with 4 other gay men. I could always use more friends, but 100% of the things I’ve signed up for on Facebook have been scams (okay, okay, I probably should have been more skeptical about 80% off on Lego sets, but that was years ago!). Anyway just curious if others have tried this and if it’s legit?

Nerve noise

Hello fellow strokes, I’ve posted about this before but I just past six months post hemorrhagic stroke, and I’m amazed at the strength and severity of my nerve noise on my effected side. And let me preface this by saying that I recognize that a bunch of folks have it way worse than me- I can still move and feel my effected side, although it’s weaker and less coordinated than it used to be. And yes I kind of expected today would be bad because I had a tooth extraction today, and even though it was thankfully on my non effected side, that between getting shot up with novacain and the fact that they were all up in my face a bunch has just enflamed my nerves and here now twelve hours later, the one side is just in knots and the prickly ticklies are at level 11. It was the prickly ticklies that was the main thing that made me think I was having a stroke in the first place, and right now that sensation is actually stronger and more intense than when I first had the stroke. Just wondering, has anyone else had this? I’m seriously considering consulting an acupuncturist. I’m on nortriptyline for this. I didn’t think it did anything until I skipped a couple nights and it was worse. I also thought cannabis would help because when I had kidney stones years ago, cannabis didn’t really relieve the pain, but it helped me put the pain in a little box somewhere so that I could ignore it easier. Cannabis to a certain extent makes the prickly ticklies worse. Strange things these strokes!

Why I didn’t speak at the city council meeting about the city hall mural.

When we were all discussing the proposed city hall mural on here the other day, I mentioned I might address city council about some of my concerns about the project. I was surprised to get something like 26 likes on my comment ( which for me on Reddit, is a lot). Well, I did not end up doing that, and I feel the need to explain to internet strangers some of the reasons why not.

First, it would have been during the open comments at the beginning of these meeting. Have you ever seen the open comments section at the beginning of a city council meeting? I have. Open comments are a requirement for open government meetings. You get three minutes, and the city council just listens. They aren’t supposed to comment, ask questions, or take any action, because anything the council does a to take action has to be on the agenda, publicly noticed, and publicly deliberated. So it’s very sad and frustrating (and slightly funny) when folks get their dander up about something and are going to go give the city council a piece of their minds and expect action to be taken, and the city council just says “thank you” and thats it.

Second, and related to the first point, I don’t know the process that has gotten the mural project to this point, but it does seem like this process is in motion and that the goal is to have something by July 4. Now whether or not we, as internet people with opinions, are satisfied with where we are on this project, the likelihood that at this point, anything could be said or done to change the outcome, is sort of doubtful. Plus, as none of us (probably) has actually taken part in this process, it would be presumptuous and unhelpful for us to voice our dissatisfaction now.

Thirdly, the AI of it all. Yes, my initial reaction to the sample designs was negative. And I think everyone had a feeling of wouldn’t it be nice to use real artists. Let’s consider: the city is trying to push for more public art. Within that, they’re also trying to do it within a budget and to come up with something that is generally pleasing to all who might see it. Art is rarely universally liked. Art is meant to make us think and ask questions and look at things with a new perspective, and art isn’t always pretty. Jackson Pollack and Paul Klee are among my favorite artists, but probably not pleasing to most folks, and probably not appropriate for city hall.
Now folks’ comments here on Reddit I thought were generally at least thoughtful. I saw a similar post on facebook, and wow, some of those folks like to criticize for the sake of criticizing, and leave one with the impression that they never think anything the city does is worthwhile. And of course the faction that thinks that the city should spend no money whatsoever until potholes no longer exist had to throw their two cents in. (And frankly, the city could spend its entire budget on resurfacing roads and still never get entirely in front of the pot holes issue. Myself, I prefer to have a police department, and when I see a pothole, I drive around it. )

Lastly, have you heard of Citrus Heights Arts? They’re the organization that is helping put murals all around town. And everyone will have an opinion on any specific mural. I went on a self guided hunt along Auburn blvd. the other night ro see for myself. Was I a fan of all of them? Not entirely. Did some look like they may have had a bit of an AI assist? Probably. Do I think the community is enhanced and richer for having them? Absolutely. Am I proud of my city that someone has the ambition, drive, and wherewithal to actually get this done and make this happen? Without a doubt. And we can all rest assured that if we don’t like a specific piece or a specific project, that we can involve ourselves more, expend some time effort and energy, and get some skin in the game that goes beyond just offering our opinions on the internet. After all, there are plenty of blank walls left.

Denied disability

Just today got my letter denying my claim for disability benefits. (53, hemmorhagic stroke six months ago). Just crushed. If it wasn’t for my parents I would absolutely be homeless right now, and dad is 90 with metastatic lung cancer and mom is 86 with Alzheimer’s. Don’t know whether to reapply or appeal. Will likely seek legal advice. If I’m so able to work, then social security should give me a job with the accommodations I need. No particular question, just venting.

I love this sub and have found lots of useful information and meaningful support here. We’re all survivors here which is often about loss and can be sad. I’m trying to be slightly lighthearted here because sometimes we run across a deficit which makes sense but that comes as a surprise. For me, I recently attended a charity crab feed. I’ve loved crab since I was a little kid. Since right left coordination is a challenge these days, I was surprised how hard it was to dig crab meat out of the crab shells, although in retrospect it totally made sense. Then two other things happened that struck me as funny: 1) somehow I ended up being the one to cut up and plate the dessert for our table. It got kind of ugly with my lack of coordination. 2). Stress can make me limp slightly, which was happening that night. I wanted a glass of wine and I asked the table if anyone else wanted anything from the bar, which was far away from our table. A friend requested a Diet Coke and I said sure. Without thinking, for the trip back I put the glass is wine in my bad hand and the can of coke in my good hand. I was getting all kinds of looks limping back to my table, spilling wine the whole way. Folks probably thought I was hammered even though it was my first glass of wine. I learned: open container in the good hand, closed container in the bad hand! This is all a weird adventure!
