Cold Cut Chop Saw

Son and I are learning to weld. We’re using a grinder now but have some projects planned. A cold saw looks like the answer. I have a sliding miter saw but my understanding is they spin too fast. Don’t want to break the bank, but is an Evolution the answer?

The double miter is familiar but I can’t see dropping that kind of cash when we still can’t stack dimes

If it helps, the first project will be sides for a trailer made from angle iron and extruded steel.

Gave In - and couldn’t be happier

Getting into metal working and wanted a dedicated face shield instead of using the welding hood. Gave in a picked up the mag mat - 15% off on top of the instant savings.

Cut Off Saw

New to metalworking and looking for a cut off saw. Doesn't seem like HF has a "cold" saw. Only abrasion cut off saws.

I'd like the cold saw type that takes the carbide blades. Anyone have a suggestion on where to find a decent one without breaking the bank?

Rear A/C Cutting On and Off

Have a 2020 Max stealth and had the rear evaporator coil replaced around Christmas. Lately it has been cutting in and out. Blows cold when it’s on. It seems like there’s a loose connection as it most often happens if I hit a bump.

Anyone have experience with this and thoughts on the first place to check?

Respirator?

My 14 yo has gotten into welding bit. I’m learning with him. We’re just doing some flux core now with a scrap metal. Mostly on a little table outside. Does he need to wear a respirator for welding and grinding if it’s outside?

Pics for fun.

USG Magnetic Accessories.

Picked up 4 magnetic hooks (coupon), a power strip, cup holder, and screwdriver tray. Using the last two on the grill.

USG magnetic hook coupon

I thought there was a super coupon for the magnetic hooks. I know it will be included in the upcoming USG sale, but the coupon was a deeper discount. Did it expire, or was I mistaken?

Finding Biological Grandfather

Is there a specific named process for finding an unknown parent, like when someone is adopted? I’d like to know what I need to research.

TL;DR: looks like the person my mom thought was her father, wasn’t.

She wasn’t raised by her parents. Kept in touch with them until they passed. We did the DNA tests a couple years ago to start working on genealogy. Mom came back half Jewish, of which we have no tradition. Makes sense; everyone was boinking after WWII. So I can narrow it down to any relatives with Jewish ancestry but none are particularly close. I’m sure there’s a systematic approach to figure it out.

Would like to keep building out my tree

Last week my 14 yo son decided he wanted to learn to weld. My FIL had the CE welded so we decided to learn.

Fast forward: USG Service Cart, Vulcan welding helmet and gloves, magnets, three ammo cans, 3 boxes of nitrile gloves, 5 rolls of shop towels, magnetic hooks, 3 different WD40 products.

Combination of coupons and PLS.

Floor Jack Mod?

I have a couple floor jacks. They work great in the garage but don’t roll well over the exposed aggregate driveway.

I’m not really interested in a buying a badlands.

Anyone successfully modify a more standard floor jack with something like the Badlands wheels?

Anyone Using the Dayton Aluminum Jack Stands

Thinking of getting these to go with my 6 ton ratcheting style. Seems like they would offer some versatility when working on things like the boat trailer, etc. and be easier to move.

Anyone have experience with them?
