Huge Snapper

I’ve been telling people around me that when I go fishing at one of my local ponds in Southeast Michigan, USA, there is this family of large snapping turtles that scare the jeebus out of me every time, by sneaking up on me while I’m fishing. They all laugh at me and think I’m messing around. Well today, I finally managed to get a video of one of the smaller ones of the bunch. Just the Freddy Kruger fingers are scary enough for me lol. Sorry no banana for scale 😂

This One Was a Fighter!

Family was telling me I should go out because of the Canada wildfire smoke and my location, added to it being 90 degrees at a shallower pond. I said, F that…third cast. I’m not mad at this one. Great fight and beautiful fish!

When You Don’t Catch a Great Bass, but win Anyway

Went to a new spot Friday…caught a couple of small Largemouth, but found this guy floating on the opposite shore of the dock/lot. No line or anything attached to it, so guessing someone lost it on a cast. Nice surprise catch of the day. I love lures, especially free ones!

ID Request

Requesting ID on this fish. Caught in a fresh water river in Southeast Michigan, USA. My Dad thinks a green sunfish, I disagreed because of the dorsal fin, and I think it’s a Crappie…but the spot pattern is strange for a Crappie, so in at odds with my pick as well, lol. Any help would be appreciated.

Question About Timeline.

I am in Michigan. I recently started a new job and got my first paycheck on 5/8. I reported on 5/15 through the Mibridges website. My upcoming food benefit payout was scheduled for 6/7. 6/3 rolled around and I received a notice about submitting paystubs. However, because I am over even the lowest threshold to get any money in stamps, I just decided to call and have them cancel my benefits instead of going through the hassle. I called on 6/3, lady was to the point and put in the change. Then I asked her, if they still pay my card since the payment is showing scheduled on 6/7, are they going to take the money back (just trying to plan for the monthly budget in June). She said I probably won’t get it, but if I do, they wouldn’t take the money back. Today rolls around and I got money deposited. Should I be worried that they are going to take it back, or should I trust her word that they wouldn’t take it back?

I Feel Terrible

I really need someone to tell me it’s okay. I am a huge animal lover, even if it’s fish. I get sensitive (probably overly) when an animal gets hurt. I try to fish with the most care and respect for the fish. Today made me think about quitting fishing 😔

Just a warning, this is a little bit of injured fish talk…I’ll keep is as little detailed as possible. Today I caught a decent size largie. At this spot I fish a Texas rigged ribbon tail on a 3/0. I took a little long to set the hook because I thought it was weeds at first (a LOT of weeds at this pond). He put up a hell of a fight. When I got him it, I realized I gut hooked him. We’ve all been there, I get that, it sucks. So I hastily go through the motions. Needle nose wouldn’t work from the top and I saw he was bleeding outside of the gills a little. So I quickly cut the line as close to the hook as I could. Realized the hook was embedded pretty bad and couldn’t see the point of the hook. To add, I purposely fish with smashed barbs because I’m always catch and release. Don’t understand why it wouldn’t slide out. So running short on time and not wanting to injure him any more, I went to go through the gill with my needle nose (which hindsight I should have just f’n done to begin with, smh) as soon as I went to go through the gill, he shook out of my grip and got into the water…and swam off and laying in the water stunned for a couple of seconds. I tried to catch him when he was falling and tried to grab him before he swam off…I couldn’t. A speck of blood splashed on my glasses, my arm, and in my beard. Not only did my dumb ass let him swim off with the hook, which is bad enough, but I didn’t even think to just tear the ribbon tail off the hook first, so he had that too.

I’m really flustered right now. Fishing is my escape from an otherwise pretty shitty world as we all know. It’s my peace, and now I feel so bad that I want to quit fishing even though I love it. I’ve gut hooked fish before, but normally smaller fish and never had an issue solving it. I could have approached the situation better, and could have done more for that fish, and now I’m left wondering if it’s swimming around suffering.

Anyway, sorry to spill. I don’t really have anyone to talk to something like that about…and I know a lot of you here would understand. I just want to know that shit happens, and it’s okay, and no I shouldn’t quit fishing because if it.

Got My First 3 Largemouth Ever Today!

For a little context..due to a situation with a pike earlier in life, I’ve had a huge phobia of handling fish, and just haven’t fished because of it for 20ish years. I recently decided to get back into it because I loved it. Three months ago I wouldn’t have even been able to get these guys off the hook even with a glove on, now I’ve moved down to gloves, and hopefully I can ditch them fully soon! Not to mention, I bagged my first 3 Largies today. Only bass I ever caught was a rock bass years and years ago. One was super tiny, but then the got my PB, and then one upped it with my new PB an hour later! First picture was the last catch on my way leaving! Don’t have a scale, but he measured 19”!

Plants are Almost Ready to go Out, Advice Needed.

It’s my first time growing. I need advice on what soil to use? I’m looking for simple for my first time. They will be in pots. If I use an organic potting soil, is there anything if I should add? If I use MG: Potting Soil, should I add anything outside of a little fertilizer when it’s time? Any help would be appreciated!

Saw these randomly…Actually, surprisingly pretty solid. However, spice is a little heavy. An interesting mix of sweet and hot.

Finally some goslings in Michigan. We’ve had an long long and harsh winter here and normally there are hundreds of goslings at this pond by now. I was losing hope for them this year, then this! Makes my heart happy 😃

I’d like to take a moment of silence for these pre-birth Canada Goslings. Every year about 100 pairs come here to have their goslings. This year there has been an excessive amount of water between snow melt off and rain since it warmed a little. This chunk of wood has historically been in the middle of this 1/4 mile x 1/4 mile pond. The water and wind dislodged it and pushed it almost to the shore a couple of nights ago. There were geese on it always. Now there isn’t, and there are intact eggs from what I can tell. This is the side by where a bunch of Turkey and Black Vultures, plus a couple hawks and crowd hang out at. It’s possible the eggs just weren’t viable because it’s been on and off unseasonably cold at night some days, it just bums me out knowing that there would be even more beautiful creatures here. I’ve only really seen 4-5 groups with goslings so far this year and a lot of pairs with none.

Makes me sad for them. Sorry for the blurryish photo, had to zoom all the way in.
