Question for JDM owners in Illinois

I'm debating picking up with an R33 or an FD RX-7 and am curious if anyone's successfully registered one in IL in the last year or so.

I ran into a blog claiming that IL was revoking plate of some JDM cars (mostly Kei cars/ trucks but they claimed a few fullsize cars as well). There's basically no other information about this anywhere that I can find that doesn't just reference this blog so I'm questioning if it's actually true or not.

Anyone run into issues getting tags here or have the state try to revoke yours?

Smartwatch companion plan question

Curious if anyone has tried this-

The smartwatch companion plan says it shares your main phone number. I would love to have this functionality on two phones instead of a phone + smartwatch. Has anyone tried adding the companion sim/ esim to a device other than a smartwatch?

Curious if there's any kind of filtering on IMEI, etc that would prevent it.

Any suggestions for cramped dryer vent connection?

Curious if anyone has any recommended solutions for connecting (and keeping connected) a dryer exhaust in an extremely cramped space.

  • My washer and dryer sit next to each other and there's about two inches of space between each of them and the walls to their side.
  • My laundry/ furnace room is cramped to the point that in order to get behind the dryer to (re)connect the exhaust I have to pull the washing machine forward, and climb over it.
  • The exhaust runs through the wall, up through the ceiling, and out the opposite wall. The opposite wall has my furnace and water heater and this is a townhome so I can't really do anything about the routing or washer/ dryer placement.
  • Between the wall inlet and the dryer is about a foot of flex hose. The hose was connected to the dryer outlet with foil tape, which obviously either isn't up to task or wasn't applied properly as it's now disconnected.

I've seen magnetic attachments but not sure how well they work or if they just end up accumulating lint, but I'd like to find a solution that doesn't involve me climbing over the machine.

Cursor placement when clicking on text?

Work has me back on an MBP after being on linux for the last several years. One minor difference in behavior that's been leading to some frustration is in MacOS when you click on a letter in a text input box the cursor is always placed at the right side of that letter. This is opposite of the behavior on KDE that I have muscle memory for so it's leading to a lot of typo's and mis-copied text.

I wasnt able to find anything about changing this behavior on my own, so I'm hoping someone knows a way to change it. I switch between Mac and Linux machines every day so I'm looking for some uniformity between platforms.

Thoughts after Wind Up Watch Fair Chicago

A friend and I just got home from Wind Up Watch Fair in Chicago and I thought I would jot down my thoughts.

TL;DR: Watch brands need to provide more photos (and actual ones, not renders) on their website.

I don't want to give negative feedback since I didn't see anything that was blatant false advertising, but there's definitely some commonality among microbrands in their marketing/ promo materials that led to me walking from the show empty handed.

For starters, the event itself is pretty cool and it's definitely worth attending. It was bordering on too crowded for my taste but they were at 1-in-1-out so it didn't get any worse. At worst I was 2 people behind for any tables I wanted to check out and that only lasted a minute or two. Every table I went to let you try watches on your wrist, some vendors even swapped straps to show you the potential combinations. There was a coffee stand and a (cash) bar. Some vendors had stock to sell at the show, and most of the ones I asked had some kind of discount for the show.

Down to the crux of the matter. I was prepared to have at make at least one pseudo-impulse buy at the show as there's a couple models that I've only seen on the internet and was geeked about checking out in the metal, but when I saw them in person found that they didn't meet expectations for one reason or another. One watch in particular claimed to have a white dial which in the product photos looks printer-paper-white and in person is decidedly silver. Had I ordered that for a 4-figure sum and had a silver dial show up on my doorstep I'd be pissed.

That trend continued across a bunch of brands but surprisingly went the other direction too- there were a handful of brands that I had completely written off based on product pics but when I saw them in person really spoke to me- March Lab and Squale look way better in person vs in photos. Also, Formex's Aria has a dial with more depth than the promo shots led me to believe, it looks more "3d" in person (the bracelet is also quite nice).

Like I said, I went in with a couple specific models on my radar so I wasn't quite ready to impulse buy other watches today but I did make some additions to my "todo" list.

Overall, do recommend, especially since it's free. But c'mon marketing folks, give us real product pics. You might actually sell a few extra watches as a result.

Random thoughts:

  • There was an eBay Live presentation (I guess you call it) which was... odd. Tbh, I don't really get the point of eBay Live- to me, it feels like QVC meets Twitch but maybe I'm not the target audience.
  • A couple notable personalities were there in person including Marc from Long Island and Zach from Worn and Wound
  • A lot of brands were relegated to tiny tables leading to crowding. Meanwhile, Windup Watch Shop and CW had multi-table long booths that probably could have been truncated in the name of giving the whole place a bit of breathing room. I get they're named sponsors but I don't think anyone preferred a card table full of nato straps from Windup vs letting others spread out a couple inches each.
  • Other attendees were happy to chat about what each other was wearing
  • The Watch Preserve had some interesting vintage pieces incl. a couple speedy's and a few Datejusts
  • Most of the staff running booths that I talked to seemed genuinely interested in watches vs just typical sales folks (or maybe they're just especially good sales folks)
  • Some dork got their BMW towed because they invented a parking space

Unable to install apparently valid packages via apt

I've run into an odd issue on Forky where as far as I understand, these packages SHOULD be available to install but apt is claiming otherwise.

My overall goal is to install gamescope, this has a dependency on libopenvr-api2 which apt says is not installable:

Unsatisfied dependencies:
gamescope : Depends: libliftoff0 (>= 0.5.0) but it is not installed
Depends: libluajit-5.1-2 (>= 2.0.4) but it is not installed or
libluajit-5.1-2 (>= 2.1.0+openresty) but it is not installed
Depends: libopenvr-api2 (>= 2.12.1~ds1) but it is not installable
Depends: libwlroots-0.20 (>= 0.20.0~) but it is not installed
             Recommends: seatd

apt info libopenvr-api2 returns:

Package: libopenvr-api2
State: not a real package (virtual)
Notice: Can't select candidate version from package libopenvr-api2 as it has no candidate
Notice: Can't select versions from package 'libopenvr-api2' as it is purely virtual
Notice: No packages found

There is a package and deb file available for download: https://packages.debian.org/forky/libopenvr-api2

Checked the package tracker, which redirects to the openvr source package, last update is that a version was migrated to testing: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/openvr

Tried to install openvr via apt:

Notice: Unable to locate package openvr

I suppose I can just install the deb downloaded from a mirror, but I would rather have apt handle things for obvious reasons. Any suggestions for a path forward?

Resources for Mesh from Shape?

Can anyone point to any resources regarding the different mesher options in the Mesh FromPartShape command? Neither the wiki page or the tooltips are particularly descriptive to a newcomer.

Standard STL export is spitting out non-manifold meshes (check geometry shows no errors) and I'm trying to export manually this way but not sure which mesher is best suited or what settings to use.
