The Big Come Down is one of the most unsettling songs Trent has written

especially the vocals, this is one of the only times he sounds this scared or disturbed. this whole song is top tier honestly, that part where it comes back in the end with the gorgeous riff is absurdly good. but yeah the only songs that I think are just as suspenseful would be Eraser or Black Noise, what other songs feel like this in your opinion?

Is there any chance they'll play Sever The Hand or Black on the European tour?

I've heard that both fans and the band are fond of Sever The Hand, but I'm not really sure about the latter song.

This is one of the best 3-song runs in their discography

Who Is Gonna Be the One has probably the best vocals of theirs ever, When Two Empires Collide has that hammer-on riff, definitely my favourite on the album, maybe my favourite from all Jinjer riffs honestly. The last song is just great as it is. It could be even a 5-song run, unfortunately Bad Water is ... kind of bad IMO. What would you guys pick?

Do you guys think a lot of people don't really listen to the later albums/rate them way too harshly?

this thought came to me after the best riff/song etc. chart post was completed a couple weeks ago and 90% of it were songs from Peace Sells/SFSGSW/ Rust In Peace and some other pre-Risk songs and it just left me wondering why almost no post 2000s songs showed up? Songs like Bodies, Die Dead Enough, Poisonous Shadows, even something like Puppet Parade could be at least mentioned. But still Peace Sells somehow won the best basswork. IK this is more of a rant but sometimes it just seems people listen to Peace Sells and RIP, say Super Collider and Risk are terrible without even spinning them once and then bash the white album for being mid. there are great songs on every album and people should try checking them out again, because they might find themselves liking the albums more than the classic ones, ok vent over ty

What would you say is the most NIN-sounding NIN album?

If you had to summarise the discography, which album would you choose? Even though a lot of albums are diverse enough, my pick would be With Teeth. The soft songs (All The Love In The World, Right Where It Belongs) and heavy ones (Getting Smaller, You Know What You Are) are pretty balanced in numbers. The singles also compliment each other very well, you have The Hand That Feeds for a bop, Every Day for a depressing song and Only as the weird one, that's also the thing about this album I love a lot that it's so damn quirky (The Collector, Love Is Not Enough, Sunspots, WITHUH TEETHUH) without being annoying. What would you guys choose?

Vocalists with underrated screams?

Fred Durst/Limp Bizkit - I know the band and especially this guy are kind of a joke in the community but my view is the band could've been way more appreciated if Fred kept screaming. I still consider his vocals on TDBY$ and on some Significant Other songs very impressive, especially on songs like Pollution and Leech, he gives the breakdowns an extra kick that make them hit way better, I don't think he's exceptional but his early vocal work wasn't anything to be ashamed of.

Michael Dafferner/Car Bomb - Now Car Bomb is a widely respected band but the discussion is always revolving around the guitar and drums, where the vocals aren't discussed like... ever? Michael's style is IMO one of the most consistent in the scene and primarily he sounds MENACING. He is probably the main reason I love the band so much since a record like Centralia sounds way more deranged and unhinged because it's so unpredictable. His screams also work perfectly with the instrumentation, I'm not good in theory at all but when he does the "ascension" with the riff being like UUUUUAAAAAA it always makes the song better.

The Slip is much better after a few relistens

the first time I listened to The Slip I was pretty disappointed, since Year Zero became my favourite album and I expected it to be similar in quality, but the only track that I found myself coming back to was Discipline. I was also hesitant to listen to Hesitation Marks because of this, and how surprised I was after it matched Year Zero for me.

Yesterday I gave The Slip another chance and wow I am so glad I did, this album is way better than I remembered it to be. 999999 to 1000000 is a very good opener, Letting You - Head down is just straight bops and the last 4 songs are some of the coolest I've heard Trent make. Corona Radiata is the only track I'm not too crazy about (yet), but if some of you haven't listened to it more than once or twice, definitely give it a go again since it honestly surpassed With Teeth and PHM for me.

Do you guys feel like The Day The World Went Away should've been a bigger hit?

Coming from a recent fan, The Fragile is one of my favourites from Trent but this song always felt like a big single, the whole atmosphere and especially the song title sound like it would be one of his most popular songs, but it's streamed way less than I imagined, plus I don't think there is a video for it anywhere.

What are your guy's opinions that listened to the song while it came out? Did you expect it to be a hit or was it big at the time? Or do you think it's just not as good as other Fragile songs?

i feel like i am not supposed to be here anymore

I don't know if I can take it much longer. my friend group that I grew very close to stopped talking to me 6 months ago, at the same time my parents divorced and I realised I was trans. I have no one to talk to, my mom isn't in a good place mentally and I don't want to burden her even more, my dad isn't really empathetic and he doesn't understand my emotions that much. I hate the way that I look, I can't stare in the mirror for too long since I'll get stressed. I started cutting myself a while ago and I can't eat normally for a damn week, either I don't eat or I just devour everything, I can't accept my body since I feel so dysphoric. I started going to a therapist a month back and after each session I feel a bit better but it doesn't help much since I always have good weeks and bad weeks, when a bad week is going to come I feel it a day beforehand and I just want to break down at that point. I relapsed after two weeks and I feel worse than ever, I hate that I just can't choose to be happy or sad. Every day I wake up feeling terrible, I can't even cry, everything seems so pointless. A few months ago I would have never thought about ending everything, but now I am not so sure. Why should I even care, when everytime everything's going great, I just get punched in the face by separation. I can't come out to nobody, I can't start HRT, i can't fucking kill myself because I'm too scared to do so.

TLDR : i can't have any friends because I'm a terrible person or something idk nobody ever tells me anything, I just victimise myself since I'm probably just too lazy to try and fix my problems and I just vent on Reddit since I'm too much of a coward to end it all, sorry for wasting your time going to cut myself to sleep bye

Vessel feels like a little sibling of Closer

basically the title, from the chorus lyrics to the way it's structured with a long instrumental outro, is this intentional or am I just delusional? I know Trent's quirk is to re-use his material and that he has a few motives that he reimplements, is this the case here?

got back into Boris just in time

hi, first time posting here!

i heard about Boris about a year ago and after listening to Pink (which i thought was great) i kind of put these guys on the waiting list, listened to Heavy Rocks, Flood and Akuma No Uta and also enjoyed those pieces. About 2 days ago Just Abandoned Myself came on on my playlist and i realised how good this band actually was, checked if they had any shows coming up out of habit, not expecting much but! the EU/UK tour just dropped and there was a show near, so i rushed to buy tickets and got one before they sold out. now i caught that it's a 20th anniversary Pink tour, but that's about it. Is there anything i should know about the show/setlist? I listened to Feedbacker today and I thought it was awesome, what albums that i haven't listed should i listen to? thank you guys in advance, i am stoked to dive deeper into this band and for the show as well!!

Final thoughts + Tierlist

https://preview.redd.it/ekasmmqiui4h1.png?width=1214&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a28e986867e5ce64c873a89efdb946b8142468e

well, this was a journey alright, thank you guys for leaving all your thoughts in the comments. it has been less than a week and this is my tierlist of my initial thoughts and feelings about each album. i'd like to state before giving a little info on my decision of each album's placement that i've enjoyed every single album and Periphery is definitely one of my favourite bands right now, and the placements will surely change after a few relistens.

starting off the S tier, HAIL STAN has the best intro tracks, is heavy, consistent and has enough variety. favourite track: CHVRCH BVRNER

juggernaut omega had everything alpha had to offer and turned it up a notch, and it's probably their peak of songwriting. favourite track: Omega/The Bad Thing

P1 is great because it's their first work. despite what a lot of people are saying, this album has probably one of my favourite vocals, i just love how raw the whole thing is. it's inconsistent, aggressive and beautiful at the same time. the riffs are also so mean, like 2:10 from The Walk is probably their favourite riff of mine, that part is crazy. and also, the album has Racecar. favourite track: The Walk/Racecar

APWD was my intro to the band and even though it's not the same as the other albums, it hooked me right from the start. best vocals for sure, i would prefer some songs to be a bit longer though. favourite track: Talk

P5 sounds like P1 rewritten in 2023 and it's so low maybe because i think it's their most complex work and i haven't listened to it enough, it may move up in the future. probably their heaviest too, above P1 and P4 by a bit. favourite track: Zagreus

i don't know what to say about Alpha tbh, it's a good mix between P1 and P2, still it's not as good as Omega IMO. it's sure as hell catchy though, favourite track : Alpha.

P2 and P3 honestly felt very similar actually, i feel i don't like them as much since the transition to a more polished sound felt a bit too sudden for me, if there was some record similar to juggernaut in between P1 and P2 i'd like P2 a lot more. i'm sorry to the P2 and P3 fans out there but these weren't for me really. favourite tracks: Erised and The Price Is Wrong

Clear was alright. i definitely appreciate it more after knowing each member wrote their own song, but i can't really put it up against the other albums, a fun little project nonetheless. favourite track: Parade Of Ashes

while were at it, here are my top 10 tracks in order:

  1. Racecar

  2. Talk

  3. The Walk

  4. CVRCH BVRNER

  5. The Bad Thing

  6. Zagreus

  7. Heaven On High

  8. Icarus Lives!

  9. Totla Mad

  10. Crush

Thats all for me, thank you for accompanying me on this journey and for reading my post!

P5 and A Pale White Dot

After a long day listening to P4 and enjoying every second of it, I decided to move on to the last album I haven't heard from this band, being P5. For the intro, Wildfire and Atropos do a great job being disgustingly heavy, not P4 level but very close behind. Wax Wings was probably my favourite from the initial trio, that machines bit is so satisfying. Everything Is Fine! I guess not, at least my ears weren't, the outro was maybe a bit too much for me. Silhouette was a banger, idk why people tend to rate their electronic tracks lower, I absolutely adore them. Dying Star is definitely the weak link, kind of left me wondering if the rest will be worse than the A side, thankfully I was wrong. Zagreus and Dracul Gras are top-tier songs and the best on the album, Thanks Nobuo served alright as a closer. Top tracks are Zagreus, Dracul Gras and Wax Wings, the album felt like a modern recreation of P1, definitely a good project.

The last and most recent album was the one that got me into the band, and I still consider it as one of their best. I can definitely see why people may have been disappointed, but I am not mad about the shift to a more metalcore sounding record. All the singles are very good, the Heaven On High riff is still stuck in my head. Subhuman, Malevolent and Mr. God ensure heaviness, more balances tracks such as Carry On and Neon Valley are also solid. As I previously mentioned, I vibe with their electronic tracks quite a lot, Blackwall serves as a nice mid-album breather. The highlight is undoubtedly Talk, the first song from them that I liked. Best vocals of Spencer's IMO, great chorus, heavy intro, great length, probably still my favourite. Top 3 here would be Talk, Heaven On High and Malevolent.

Tommorow I'll listen to some songs I still need to make my mind up on (I'm looking at you Ragnarok) and give you an overall album ranking, thank you for your attention today!

P3 and P4: Hail Stan

Moving on from Juggernaut, P3 is an album I'll probably have to listen to the most times. Songs that I do like hit pretty great, The Price Is Wrong and Motormouth are a great start, the three songs after that still fail to click with me. Thankfully the remainder of the album (excluding Catch Fire, that song is kind of confusing for me for some reason) stays pretty consistent. My favourites would probably be The Price Is Wrong, Flatline, Prayer Position and Lune.

To be honest, based on your guy's thoughts, I sort of knew that P4 wouldn't let me down and it didn't. Reptile is an absolute monster of a song, plus it's an OPENER, like how do you get an idea like this? Blood Eagle is probably the heaviest I've heard from them, I can imagine that it's probably the best song live. CHVRCH BVRNER pleasantly surprised me with it's resemblance to Dillinger Escape Plan's Prancer, the second half is probably my favourite moment of the album and maybe of any Periphery song. Garden In The Bones took a while to click, same with Follow Your Ghost and It's Only Smiles but all of these songs are just great and solid tracks through and through. Crush was also awesome, it sounds like if HEALTH and Periphery collabed. The outro is also a serious bop. Sentient Glow was a great follow up to Crush, no complaints there. Now this is where my 2 (probably) hot takes come in - first, I didn't really enjoy Sattelites. I can't really pinpoint what exactly is wrong, maybe that the switch up feels a bit forced? It's the only track I would consider skipping. Second, Reptile is not in my top 3 from this album (which consists of CHVRCH BVRNER, Crush and Blood Eagle in this specific order) because of one simple reason - it doesn't feel like 17 minutes and goes by way too quickly so I can't really enjoy it as much. Basicaally it's written so great to the point it is a bit too overwhelming.

Tommorow I'll be back with P5 and APWD, since I heard the latter already, and give you my thoughts as usual, would love to hear your opinions as well!

Periphery II, Clear and Juggernauts

Here I am again after yesterday's post about P1 and I gave Periphery II about 2,5 listens and I can definitely say it's... different from P1. way more melodic and focused on Spencer's vocals and tbh, I don't know if I like it more like this or not. Standouts for me were Luck As A Constant, Erised, Scarlet and Froggin Bullfish, the only songs I wasn't a fan of were Ragnarok and The Gods Must Be Crazy!. If there is a thing that I can say for certain then that the lyrics improved a lot and the mix is better, but I'd say that I prefer P1 as of now.

Clear was a weird listen, and for some reason the whole EP has a "what if Periphery was a 2003 nu-metal band" vibe to it imo, especially the song Feed The Ground, the outro feels like a throwback to Slipknot's Gematria. Not much else to say about this one, wasn't really a fan.

Now I had only one listen through Alpha and Omega but I will definitely have to focus more, but what I've gathered from this first listen is that The Bad Thing, Omega and MK Ultra are bangers and the duology has a lot of potential.

I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully having listened through Alpha/Omega and P3, which I'm honestly worried about a bit since I've heard that it's their most commercial album but if it has a djent-off like The Walk then it's going to be alright.

I love Periphery I so much

when APWD came out I decided it's time to listen to this band, I've been hearing good things about them and I really liked APWD, so I decided to listen from the start and damn this album is phenomenal. I've seen people complain about Spencer's vocals, mainly on this album but I have no idea what they are talking about, this guy is insane, just listen to Jetpacks Was Yes!. The Walk, Totla Mad, Ow My Feelings have been standouts so far but the best song is undeniably Racecar. Listened to the album about 3-4 times in the past 2 days but I had played Racecar about twice as often, I love how it's structured and the part with the different vocalist is sick. Moved on to Icarus EP and Periphery II today but I can't lie, first listen I beats II for me, but I'll see after a few more listens. This band is awesome, I am so excited to hear all of their albums.

I love evil/sinister sounding albums

here are some of my favourite albums with an eerie atmosphere, all of them are full of songs where even after listening many times I can't predict what will happen next. songs like Heir Apparent, Clone, Communion, §5 and The Conjuring are my standouts. Do you guys have any other albums with a similar vibe?
