27F New to Town and Want to Make Friends!

Hi all!

I’m a 27F and will be moving to the Manayunk/Germantown area in November. This has been a move that’s been years in the making and I’m super excited. I’d love to make some friends and make some connections.

A little about me:
- I love making art, especially ceramics and tile making. But I’d love to go to some artist meetups as a whole
- I also LOVE to cook, so cooking groups and competitions sound like a lot of fun
- I’m not crazy athletic but wouldn’t mind trying out a casual sports group
- Love to thrift and shop
- Enjoy horror/thriller movies and books. Book clubs with aligning interests sound amazing
- Also love going out and dancing and having a fun night

Happy to chat more about other stuff too!! Let’s be pals :•)

French Onion Soup Rolls with White Wine Cream Sauce Frosting

(Was advised to share here from r/Food!)

Basically took pizza dough and added homemade caramelized onions, whole roasted garlic cloves, asiago, parmesan, gruyere, provolone and herbs in the roll itself. The “frosting” is a white wine cream sauce and I used the remaining cheese and herbs and also threw in some whipped cream cheese for good measure.

No there is no written recipe I made this solely off of vibes. Yes it was delicious, yes I ate a disgusting amount of this pan and yes I will be remaking this and will try to more accurately measure quantities tysm

I LOATHE the books my book club picks but I continue to read and go for the social aspect

So I’m a 26F who lives in the suburbs, trying to get money saved to move into someplace a little more urban since it fits my lifestyle better. I’ve joined this book club that I was introduced to by my old college friends to kinda mix and mingle more, it’s just so slow where I live and I feel like I’m going crazy. And listen, I love my friends and the other girls in the group they’re very nice and great hangs but oh my fucking god… these books. I can’t. It’s so bad.

Now for context I really like a lot of horror/thriller/stuff that puts you on the edge of your seat and romance isn’t really my thing. Sex/smut? Absolutely. But honestly anything fluffy and sappy just does not really resonate with me. A lot of the girls in my group are at a phase in their lives right now where they’re dating to marry or are engaged/already married, and I think that’s why they all shift towards these books that are like, about people confessing their undying love for each other or having vanilla sex with the guy that they’ve held a flame for since high school. Meanwhile I’m serially single and I travel a lot for work and tend to be a one night stand person or I have brief flings and sorta move on. AND LISTEN while I am very happy for these ladies for being in these (what I hope are) happy relationships, I am not a relationship and romance person. I think if they did read some of the smutty stuff I geared towards, I think they’d faint. That’s why honestly I’ve started to read like the first 5-10 chapters of the books we pick and the rest I look up online LOL.

The thing is though, the social aspect of it is nice. We have a group chat where we all talk, our meetings involve wine and appetizers and it isn’t always all book-talk, sometimes it’s work, or shared hobbies, or concerts. Where I live I feel that it’s just painfully slow paced and it is difficult to meet new people, so this feels like I am getting my social fix that isn’t at work or the gym and I actually do enjoy the company of the girls in the group.

So I guess I’ll keep up with the facade for now and enjoy the other perks of the group!

[Discussion] Is BNI a good way to find clients and network as an artist? Or are there better ways?

So I’m a painter, illustrator, ceramicist, and tile maker who lives in the NYC Metro Area (30 min train ride into the city) who’s really trying to take my career with art to the next level. I’d like to transition from my full time gig in marketing over into freelance work within the next year and thankfully have been banking a ton of money that it won’t be an issue for a few months once I make the jump.

However prior to that: I’m really trying to network and build a client base. A friend of mine who does Branding and Web design is a member of an NYC BNI Chapter and she said she’s had some success with it bringing her work. First meeting went well, and I have to attend a few additional meetings before I can apply for membership.

For this chapter it’s about a $1000 for the year which like… is a little steep but if it gets me work it pays for it itself. Have any professional artists here used BNI before and recover results (especially in NYC)? Are there better alternatives out there that are cheaper it’s better results or same price point and better for creatives?

Would appreciate guidance and honest experiences.

Folk Art Tile Mural

She’s finally done! My dad’s redoing his bathroom and is doing a red and blue theme, this is gonna be instilled in a wall inlay shelf! My mom who passed away loved her tulips and my dad still plants them for her, so I thought the tulips would be a nice sentimental touch :)

This was a mix of some stoneware discard I had laying around and was painted with Amaco, Speedball and Kiwi underglazes! Excited to mount this and get it installed.

My Boss says that my social calendar is too packed

So I think my boss is projecting some of his insecurities onto me.

For context, I work a very demanding job that requires me to work events and travel, especially on weekends. My longest streak of having days I had to work on weekends was 5 weeks. I knew this coming into the job, and I said I was fine with that but when I am not traveling I need my work-life balance respected: I have a big family I’m actively involved with, same with my friend group and overall community, and I have a hobby I’m very passionate about. I also go to the gym and enjoy just general self care when I can. “Sure OP, no problem at all” Mind you, I was recruited for this job as well. So I felt I had some of the upper hand for laying my ground rules if they wanted me to

This has been a constant battle I have to deal with since I started a year ago where if I’m leaving between 5 to 6 pm when everyone else in our office leaves, I’m accused of blowing off work and not caring. “This is more important than your social calendar OP” “You should not be booking up your after work hours this much in case there’s an emergency” “What’s possibly so important you can’t stay and finish this task?” Again: everyone else leaves at 5 to 6, so why can’t I? And don’t my several weekends I have to take to work count for something???

I feel as though my boss is projecting a bit onto me: he doesn’t have a lot of friends beyond work and even then… not super popular in the office due to him being kinda mean to everyone. He’s not close with his family really either and hobbies are non-existent either. Honestly he’s the kind of guy who makes his work and career his whole personality which is fine… but not for me.

Just because you’re miserable and isolated all the time doesn’t mean I have to be too.
