Do you remember Mars 2112?

Hi all! My name's Juno, I'm a video essayist who writes about themed entertainment, often the nostalgic kind. I'm currently working on a video (maybe documentary would be the better word? It's a surprisingly dense topic) about Mars 2112, the space-themed restaurant that once existed in the Paramount Plaza near Times Square between 1998 and 2012.

Something notable about the restaurant to me is how it seemed to be beloved by both tourists and NYCers alike (though some also had a very deep hatred for it), and I want to highlight that in my coverage.

If you've ever visited or worked at Mars 2112, I would love to hear anything you have to share! Memories, opinions, facts, even if you hated it, anything goes! I may read part or all of your comment in my video, but I'll be sure to omit any personal/identifying details.

I'm not able to share more of my work on this post, but if you'd like to know more about me or what I do, feel free to DM me and ask, I'm happy to share! I would love to be able to cap off my essay with testimonials from people other than me.

Thank you for reading!

Looking for private karaoke recs

I've recently realized my love for karaoke and want to go out to do it with my partner more often. I'm a little shy though and am not exactly ready for the karaoke bar experience where you get up in front of everyone else, I prefer ones where you can rent a room, ideally for a flat hourly rate. Would love especially to hear about places where purchasing food/drinks isn't required/encouraged as my partner has a lot of allergies and neither of us handle alcohol very well lol

Valium making me more anxious?

Hi all, I've had overthinking-style anxiety for much of my life, but in the past year it's developed into physical symptoms and frequent panic attacks, often ones that take days to fully wear off and make it near-impossible to eat due to psychosomatic nausea. My most recent psychiatrist prescribed me gabapentin and later 2-4mg diazepam to help manage my panic attacks.

The weirdest thing is, at first it worked. The gabapentin would calm racing thoughts, but not help my body, whereas I could actually feel my tight stomach unravel around an hour after taking one. That was only the case for about two weeks, though. Now, for some reason, without fail, my anxiety flares back up an hour after taking the diazepam, often just as bad or even worse than the panic that led me to take it in the first place.

It's gotten to the point where I'm afraid of taking my own anxiety meds because I'm worried they'll make my anxiety worse. My psychiatrist also dropped me suddenly a few weeks ago (TL;DR he prescribed me something that put me in the ER and was I guess so embarrassed about it he cut me as a patient two days before our next visit), and finding a new one has also been an uphill battle because of anxiety, but I also know I can't and especially don't want to keep managing this all on my own.

Has anyone else had this experience with Valium? The only explanation I can find online is a paradoxical reaction, which I'm really skeptical of because of how rare it is and the fact that it had worked in the past. Any advice on what to do in the interim of doctors? I'm relatively new to psychiatry and the like so I'm kinda scared shitless in every angle lol. Anything helps, thanks.

Transcriber available for captioning YOUR video(s)

Hi all, I'm someone with a YouTube channel myself and, through making my own videos, unexpectedly fell in love with the captioning process. My personal life has made it hard for me to make original stuff lately, but I still have the itch to be productive, so I'm opening myself up to captioning other people's videos!

I have done work for other people before (I transcribed two VODs of panels from Dashcon 2, though these are paywalled so I can't link them publicly), but as a volunteer. This will not be a paid service, but my rates will be significantly lower than the average transcriber since I'm still no professional.

You can see some of the captioning work on my own videos here, here, here, and here. You'll notice these videos are all close to or well over an hour, so longer videos are no issue for me. I've also had multiple people thank me for adding captions on every video I've added them to, so consider that adding them to your own videos may increase viewership/engagement!

If you're interested in working with me, whether for one video or longer-term, please send me a DM with the related info and we can discuss pricing! I'd love to work with you– thanks for reading!

Queer bars that aren't strictly gay/lesbian?

Prefacing this by saying I realize I'm in a general Brooklyn sub and not an LGBT-specific one, I'm asking in a few places. I also realize I'm opening myself up here, so any asshole-ish comments will simply be ignored.

Looking for a decent queer bar to bring my partner to. The thing is, we're both nonbinary. Personally as a transmasculine person, going to bars full of cis gay men makes me feel tiny and wimpy and a bit scared, and going to lesbian bars can feel "safer," but I'm always worried about being misgendered by a well-meaning lesbian who assumes I'm a "she." My worries are somewhat vice-versa for my partner.

I've yet to find a queer bar that isn't specifically "a gay bar" or "a lesbian bar." Are there any that are more general, or at least geared toward trans people specifically?

Is there such thing as rental assistance when unemployed?

I'm currently unemployed due to my last company downsizing and getting rid of my position entirely. This was a little over a month ago, with my current lease ending at the end of this month. I tried getting more time with my current place, but my landlord is and has always been a jerk, so the only option for myself and my partner (freelancer) is to be out by June 1st. However, since we both have an unconventional relationship to the job market right now, to put it lightly, most places won't even let us tour, let alone accept our application. I've also asked my dad to be our guarantor, which he's agreed to the previous two years I've rented and had no problem, but now brokers are telling me even he makes too little for us to get past the "pre-qualifying questions."

I know there are programs for rental assistance if you're being evicted/are homeless, or if you're struggling to pay your current rent while unemployed, but I'm less sure if there's any way to get assistance with finding a *new* apartment. I've heard about Section 8 in passing, but when looking it up yesterday it seems like they aren't accepting new applications for the foreseeable future.

Is there anything you guys might be aware of that might help out in this situation? Besides the obvious "get a new job," of course. Thanks in advance
