China has now made one thing clear to the companies in its countries: they cannot fire employees simply because AI can do their jobs. In a recent ruling, a Chinese court said replacing workers with artificial intelligence does not automatically justify the termination of the human workforce.

The ruling was issued by the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court. It favored an employee in a labor dispute, after an AI-related technology company replaced part of his work with large language models and subsequently dismissed him. The court published the case on Tuesday as part of a set of "typical examples of protecting the rights of AI enterprises and workers" ahead of International Workers' Day on May 1.

Soumyadeep Sen and Vaidreemla Pradhan, who are from West Bengal, were driving towards Electronics City when they asked a group of youths — who were riding recklessly and doing wheelies — to slow down. Irritated by the advice, the youths blocked their car, smashed the windows, and physically attacked the couple. The entire episode was recorded on the couple’s dashboard camera.

The injured pair was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Police have registered a case at the Electronics City traffic police station.
