Need a quiet place for Teams call tomorrow morning

Hey neighbors! I am from McCordsville and have to be over towards Keystone/31 for a doctors appointment tomorrow morning. However I have a teams call for work at 9:30 AM. I called the library and they do have rooms but it's first come first serve, and I don't have a caramel library card. I'm just looking for suggestions in that area (Greyhound Pass) which might offer a decently quiet space with Wi-Fi. I've hunted around on Google but I figured people who live there might know best.

Thanks!

Ok enough dooming about Markham!! Story time. My grandfather at the Indy 500 in the 1920s.

Inspired (memory jogged by the 1932 newspaper find).....Probably should have posted this in May, but oh well. I'm bored on a Friday night. I doubt you'll find a story older than this one...not including newspapers or archival radio footage.

My grandfather was born in 1916. His father (my great grandfather) was a mechanic who helped Elwood Haynes build one of the first automobiles in the US, in 1894. Kokomo claims it as the "first" but that's disputed obviously (Mercedes had a form of one 8 years prior)....regardless it was one of the earliest automobiles in the world/US. Anyway, Elwood knew Carl Fisher, one of the creators of IMS since they were both in the automotive industry together. When the 500 was first announced, my great grandfather obviously had a great interest.

When my grandfather was 9-10, he went to his first Indy 500. By the 1920s it had become a major event. Not as huge as it is today but still big. My grandfather attended the 1924 Indy 500 at 8 years old. They traveled down by car, the trip down took 3 hours (just over an hour today not counting race traffic). He told me they packed the car the night before excluding food and drinks. Left early the next day. The race took around 6 hours and was won by LL Corum and Joe Boyer, back then they had relief drivers. They were credited as co-winners. Their average speed? 98 mph!! Whoooo! They finished in just over 5 hours but back then they let other cars run for a while after the checkered flag. I think it was around an hour later they flagged anyone who hadn't completed the 200 laps.

My grandfather told me he remembers getting to stand in the pits, walk around and see the cars from right off turns 1-2, stuff never allowed today (especially an 8 year old in pit lane).

Before he lost his memory to both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, I vividly remember him telling me the story. It was pretty amazing, seeing one of the first Indy 500s in person.

Oh well, sorry for the novel.... and again, I should have posted this story back in May. I had kind of forgotten about it actually

Watching any Indy 500 in the late 1980s through mid 1990s

Old Bobby always thought it was really wet down low on the track. And he loved the word "adhesion"... I really miss him, especially when he would argue with Sam Posey and contradict whatever Sam was saying. I'm not the greatest with graphic design, but this is the best I could come up with. probably more appropriate back in May but I was really busy.

My son is in 7th grade. Found out today they'll be watching Interstellar as part of their curriculum!!!

My son started 7th grade last week. Too early for school, but that's another complaint for another day.

I was reading through permissions and the parent guide and there was a box asking "can your son watch the movie titled Interstellar? This PG-13 movie supports discussions involving gravity, forces, motion, energy, space science, planetary conditions, scientific models, and engineering challenges. Students may analyze how scientists use evidence and mathematical models to make predictions while also distinguishing accepted scientific principles from theoretical or fictional elements included in the movie."

If there was a "HELL YES" boxed I would have checked it. He has seen it and like me, it's his favorite movie ever...seeing it in true 70mm IMAX helps.

Just wanted to share, they might go back too early in August, but my son's school knows what's up when it comes to using this great film to teach them science!

Intentionally mis-saying/hearing song lyrics even though you know the correct ones!

We've all had the "oh I thought singer was saying this, not that."

There have been plenty of posts about misheard song lyrics. I'm asking the reverse. What is the song that you knew the words to, but so many memes have gone around about it being something else that you just started remembering or singing the wrong lyrics on purpose??

For example, Alanis Morissette and You Oughta Know. Since it came out, I always knew that it was "the cross I bare that you gave to me." But so many people have posted on social media/Reddit that they thought it was "cross eyed bear"....I just started singing it that way lol.

Others "it's gonna be May"...."hold me closer Tony Danza"...."it doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not" (living on a prayer)

Even more recent songs: "Choosin' Texas by Ella Langley.... someone posted instead of "drinking Jack all by myself", it was "drink and jack off by myself"... and now I can't unhear it!!

Am I the only weirdo who does this? I know the real lyrics but I intentionally sing the wrong ones just for fun.

Ed Orgeron reacting to his daughter-in-law at wedding for his son in the most Coach O way possible

Sorry for the Facebook link but I'm not on a ton of other social media. This was hilarious and completely on-brand for Coach O.

Of course this was on Lake Lanier....Maritime Disaster Addition

This guy is lucky to be alive. Sorry for the Instagram link, but it has gone viral so you can check it out if you Google it. Of course it was on Lake Lanier.... that jet ski probably sunk to the bottom to add to the hole that's keeping the lake from draining....

Rant: There is absolutely no reason our kids should be going back to school this early in August.....

With 3 kids in school, every year I grow more frustrated at these early school starts. What used to be after Labor Day in the 60s-70s has moved slowly to late August in the 80s-90s, now to early August. Why?? Studies have shown it doesn't markedly improve test scores or academic performance, the shorter summers mean lost revenue for our tourism industry, we lose August to school when that's the best weather. And we have soooo many breaks during the year! You know how hard that is for working parents?

Want to go to the State Fair?? Too bad, it won't be during the day bc it starts after a lot of kids are back in school. Want to plan a vacation? Sorry, your kids need to be in school while it's 90 degrees outside.

I know not every school starts this coming week. Some still wait until after August 15th. But hell, we're ranked like 45th in education so the shorter summers aren't exactly helping.

If we insist on keeping this short summer, why don't we do like the east coast? Schools go into mid June and go back later. Indiana weather in May/June has always been a crapshoot anyway. August is almost always nice and warm. So maybe kids go to June 15th or so and go back last week of August or after Labor Day. Idk but this is super lame.

Uhhh...guys, Kit Dixon is go-karting now, pretty well!

Between the Wheldon boys and now Kit Dixon, we have some next generation drivers....apparently Kit lead the whole race until the end when he ran into traffic. I feel old AF seeing this bc I remember when their older girls were toddlers!! I follow Emma bc they used to live near us and we'd run into them around Fishers. Super nice family whenever we spoke. Can't believe we might have another Dixon in IndyCar in about 13-15 years!

Talking about how much we paid for a major purchase, generational differences??

EDIT: US citizen here....

I thought I would throw this one out because I was on a different sub, a car sub... and someone just flat out asked another person how much they paid for their vehicle. I commented that it wasn't really polite to do that but then got downvoted to oblivion. In retrospect it's understandable, it's Reddit and it's pretty anonymous. It's not like I asked my best friend how much he paid for his brand new SUV. So I felt kind of silly after that.....

But I had several comments after mine stating that "it's so weird how the older generations are private about their finances".... and most of the comments were related to sharing salary at work to prevent people getting screwed over. I kind of get that. If someone is getting hosed you want to make sure they are getting paid with they're worth. But major purchases are a little different. I was raised to never ask someone how much they paid for their house, their car, a boat, home renovation, pool, etc. It was considered bad manners and improper.
Maybe it's a Midwest thing, maybe it's generational. Maybe it's because when I was a kid we didn't have much money, but moved into the middle class as my dad started to make more, even though he never told me how much. But no one except my wife knows how much I make per year. Or how much we paid for our house. My own 12 year-old asks every once in a while and I tell him "don't worry about it, buddy, if you like it and have a roof over your head, it shouldn't matter."

Yes I know the Internet and social media has made people a lot more open about this stuff. Call me old-fashioned I suppose, but I don't like asking people that type of stuff. If I want to know a price range I may phrase the question in a different way (hey what's the price range on a house in that neighborhood?), something a little less blunt......and we can all Google/look up how much certain things cost or at least get a price range.

Make sure taking Reddit out of it because of the anonymity, is it really a generational thing? I ask because I don't work with too many people that are well younger than me. Most of my friends are around my age, maybe 10 years younger at the most. Maybe my parents just were ultra private about things.

Oh ESPN.... never stop being terrible

The "Grand Prix of Illinois?" 😂😂😂😂

Yes I know it's technically in Illinois, but I've never heard it referred to as that.... typical of ESPN. We were an afterthought even when ABC/ESPN had the broadcasting rights.

A little obscure trivia that we can add to the iceberg.....

Spent a good deal of May watching old Indianapolis 500 races. Especially late 80s and early 90s with Paul Page as the announcer.

Can anyone tell me what sporting event aired right after the Indianapolis 500 for several years in the late 80s/early 90s? Without googling it or going back and watching the broadcast? I'll give you a hint, it was not Baseball but did involve white balls.... the more specific the better.

I think the correct answer deserves a spot on the iceberg. Because it ran for a number of years immediately following the conclusion of the race.

"Paul Page promotes 'stay tuned for _____________ right after the race today'" (that's what we could add to the deeper part of the 'berg)

My son meeting Mario for the first time nine years ago and then again today.…. Mario is a little older now but still super nice.

Just happened to run into him as he was leaving the pagoda area. Still such a nice guy. My son loves him so it was a cool full circle moment.

Tough choice to make, input helpful…..looking at trading in a 2020 gas for a 2021 hybrid

I have a 2020 Platinum, 77k trouble free miles. But with gas being $$$ and no idea when it’s coming down, I’ve been kicking around a hybrid. Should have gone that route to begin with but that’s over. Found a 2021 Platinum hybrid for $33,900 with 83k miles and a hitch (important to me as I have a jet ski I would like to tow). I owe about $32k on mine and trade in at best is probably $27k. ———————————-

Here’s the caveat. I drive 2,500-3,000+ miles for work every month. I get a fixed car allowance ($800) and mileage, which goes up or down based on gas prices (it was at 23 cents a mile in February, now it’s 28 cents a mile).

————————————-

The transmission thing is in the back of my head, I’ve been lucky so far and might never have an issue, given the percentages. But I average 25-26 mpg on the highway….the Hybrids get 34-35.

So, what say you? I can cover about $4,000 out of pocket to keep the monthly payments down. I get paid to drive so why not make more on the gas allowance and get the damn hitch I want? Downsides are coming $4,000 out of pocket, and it’s got slightly higher miles. Just looking for opinions…..with what I do I’m gonna drive these things until they have no resale anyway, but I do love the 6 cylinder power of my 2020….
