TST Aug 19th Podcast

I am not listening to 90+ minutes of Lindsie and her yes-man. I also don’t care for her thoughts on the Lindsay Clancy case so I’m not recapping that part of the episode.

The only part that I wanted to listen to based on the episode description was the part about Kristen. Once again, Lindsie says the content that was removed from the Aug 5th Time for a Rebrand episode* *(the content where she’s clutching pieces of paper saying “I HAVE RECEIPTS”) was removed without her approval. She confirmed it was related to what Kail found in the emails between Kristen and the Chrisley camp. She hinted that Kristen “jumped ship and went to the other side” to consult with the Chrisley camp. The email that she referenced in the Time for a Rebrand episode, before it was removed, was sent to Lindsie by accident because it was sent to an email the Kristen used to use for work but that Lindsie retained access to. She’s saying the Kristen has been negotiating contracts for the Chrisley camp (presumably Savannah) since April according to the email thread but Lindsie believes it started earlier. Of course she blames legal for not being able to talk about it more explicitly - I’m the one who is saying it’s Kristen based on the obvious hints.

How do we dispose old old sex toys?

I’ve been trying to figure out how to dispose of old vibrators that don’t work anymore. I tried researching whether Vancouver has a special program for sex toys and it seems like we don’t, but I also read that you can’t throw rechargeable vibrators into the garbage because it could potentially cause a lithium battery fire in the dump truck… so what do we do with them? Do I keep them until I die and let my estate deal with it?

Marital Status Optional?

I use a non-CPA accounting firm, but I have friends who use a CPA and it has me second-guessing whether I’ve been missing out on benefits.

They’ve told me that they have been filed as single for years, even while married or living together. Apparently, when one spouse has a high income and the other has little or no income, filing as single can significantly increase CCB and other income-tested benefits, especially with multiple children. They were also advised that going on EI during the winter while listed as single with dependants could result in higher benefits.

From what they’ve described, this doesn’t sound like a one-time mistake but it appears to have been done for multiple families over a number of years.

Considering the accountant providing this advice is a CPA, I’m wondering whether I’ve somehow missed out on a significant amount of benefits over the years by having everything reported based on our actual marital status. My friends basically describe this as one of the advantages of having a “good accountant,” while mine isn’t a CPA. Mine tells me to this is not possible but maybe he's stuck on rules that aren't enforced?

The Nest Pickleball in Tsawwassen

If you live in the area, you may have seen the two giant black buildings in the Tsawwassen Mills parking lot go up. These buildings are the new Nest Sports indoor pickleball facility. It opened up at the end of July. I’m sharing my experience at The Nest hoping it will prevent others from being overcharged.

I was excited that south delta was getting its own indoor pickleball facility. It is massive inside and the space itself is really nice inside. Unfortunately, my experience with how payments were handled left a bad taste in my mouth.

On Sunday, August 9 we booked a court for two hours for Monday, August 10. At the time of booking, we had three confirmed players, so the total was $86.01, or $28.67 per person. The morning of, we added a fourth person and didn’t think anything of it. When we arrived at The Nest, we were told that the fourth player still had to pay separately. I explained that the court had already been paid for in full, and at the time the owners at the front desk said that everything was good and that there would be no extra charge, but my card was automatically charged another $28.67.

When I noticed the additional charge later that evening and called The Nest, I spoke with Lorne (the owner) and he insisted that the charge was correct. That didn’t make sense to me, because their website states that non-prime-time court bookings are $40/hour per court. A two-hour booking for four people should therefore be $86.01 total, rather than $114.68. Even though I pointed out these facts to him, he said I was wrong, the system was right, and refused to refund me or give me a credit for future play.

I went back on Tuesday, August 11 and was added as the fourth player to someone else’s booking. Once again, an additional $28.67 was automatically charged for me on the booking holder’s card. One again Lorne (the owner) insisted that this was correct. However, when I opened the app and showed him that booking a court for two hours with four people at the same time comes to $86 total, or $21.50 per person, there was still no acknowledgment that the payment process has been wrongly overcharging people.

My biggest issue is that nowhere on the website or booking page did I see anything explaining that booking for three people and subsequently adding a fourth would result in the fourth person being charged $28.67, even though the court itself was already paid for in full. I also don’t agree with automatically charging someone’s card for an additional player without clearly communicating how that charge is calculated.

The facility itself is impressive, but the way we were overcharged and the owner refusing to acknowledge the issue or make it right left a bad taste in my mouth. I won’t be going back.

Review Letter for Professional Dues

Hi everyone,

My fiancé received a review letter from the CRA asking for support for his professional dues. He is an engineer and has worked in engineering roles for almost a decade until this past spring. He was layed off due to the slowdown in work. We have a copy of the receipt from him paying his annual dues. The letter mentions submitting a letter from his employer stating that membership in the professional organization was necessary to be able to do his job.

We will be able to get his past employer to provide a letter for 2025. However for 2026, are we allowed to claim his engineering dues? I was under the impression that you could claim your professional dues to maintain your status if you were an engineer.

Advice Needed on Career Pivot

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to make a career pivot and need advice. I did my BBA with a concentration in accounting. I had a few co-op jobs in public accounting at different firms and decided it wasn’t for me. Since graduating, I’ve been working for a national sized company. After 5 years, I’m feeling like I need a change. There’s no opportunities for upward mobility unless someone retires, the salary has stagnated, and I just don’t enjoy the work anymore.

Outside of work, I’m interested in learning about health (from the aspect of making nutrition accessible) and wellness (think mental health, stress management and recovering from burnout). I’m very social and I love helping people.

I can’t afford to stop working and start a new degree full-time so I would need to do a post-graduate diploma. I was thinking of pivoting into HR and hopefully finding a role that focuses on building healthier workplaces and wellness initiatives. However, I’ve seen a lot of people on Reddit say it’s hard to break into HR.

Do you think it’s worth pursuing or would I be wasting my time and money?

What would you like to see in Season 5?

They writers needs to come up with more interesting drama that isn’t just Cal and Maggie being on and off or wedding-related drama. Even the kids moving in with Cal is kind of boring. What would get you excited to tune in weekly?

Bethany Menzel of Salty Face

Does anyone know what happened to Bethany Menzel?

She was a decently popular Canadian influencer (I think she had 60K followers?) that stopped posting on social media a few years ago. I thought it was because she was focusing on building her brand Salty Face. I was hoping she would eventually return since I loved her clothing style and her DIY home projects but I tried looking her up on Instagram and her profile is gone.

*OLD NEWS* TST Katy Harrell co-host

I was curious about the origins of The Southern Tea since I only started listening about a year ago and Kristen was always co-hosting. I didn’t realize The Southern Tea was supposed to essentially be like the southern Coffee Convos. Katy only lasted like 6 months as co-host and the reasoning for stepping away was to focus on her daughter.

I wonder what actually happened? I can’t imagine recording a one-hour podcast every week is a huge commitment.

US Tax course for Canadian CPA

Hi everyone,

I’m a Canadian CPA looking for recommendations on courses to learn US tax. I currently work in audit and want to plan my exit. The current firm that does not provide cross-border tax services. However, I’ve noticed a lot of job postings at other firms in my area looking for people with US tax experience. I have not done the Canadian in-depth tax program.

Thank you in advance!

Are you done with The Southern Tea Podcast?

I have a feeling they’re going to release another encore episode this week. I understand that she probably can’t speak on her DUI publicly since she plans on fighting it in court but I feel like she owes her audience an explanation and apology. Since Lindsie doesn’t spill the tea about anything (what happened to the 🦷 deep dive??), I don’t see a point in listening to her podcast anymore.

Can we please disembark the plane row by row?

I’ve flown Flair a few times and tonight (May 25) after we landed in YLW from YYC, people from the back of the plane were trying to shove through to get to the front of the plane as we were disembarking. People are trying to get their carryons down from the overhead bins while people are trying to squish past. I don’t know when this behaviour started but I’ve noticed it several times now and it’s really annoying.

have any of the girls spoken out to support Mikayla?

I haven’t seen anyone post anything in support of Mikayla. I’m hoping that they will come out and say something because TFP is being vile and a bully.

Edit: my issue are TFP supporters making posts discussing Mikayla’s CSA to get back at her for her statements on TFP. I think it’s gross and crosses a line.
