CRA audit issues

So i hate to do this because i understand CRAs lack of agents bit i am at my wits end. Tax return was filed in Sept of 2025 for a corporation, no refund or anything issued until letter dated february 16th, not suprised as expecting a large refund. I was audited and was given 15 days to respond, after 4-5 months of radio silence.

I responded with the requested documents within the time frame and begin waiting, trusting CRA to review and get back to us.

Hear nothing from the agent until i call them in mid july. they respond there are no issues and audit will be done in a week or two. They then, only after the call, reach out to request more information! After they have said it was okay.

we give them the information requested and now we are still waiting!

I understand CRA is busy but this system has to have a better solution.

I dont know why i am posting this, but maybe i just want to see others experiences as well.

CCB Dispute with Canada Revenue Agency

I originally applied for and received the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for my son. I was the parent who had been receiving the CCB.

My ex-partner subsequently made a claim for the CCB for the period December 2019 through October 2022, representing to CRA that I was not the eligible parent and that he was.

CRA accepted his claim and issued him a retroactive lump-sum CCB payment for that historical period.

As a result of my ex-partner's claim, CRA subsequently determined that the CCB I had originally received was an overpayment and established a debt against me of approximately $22,000.

I disputed CRA's determination and spent approximately a year and a half gathering documentation and evidence establishing that I was actually the eligible parent during the relevant period.

CRA subsequently reviewed my evidence and reversed its original determination. CRA has now accepted that I was the eligible individual for the CCB during the relevant period.

That determination initially resulted in approximately $10,000 being removed from the amount CRA said I owed, reducing the alleged debt from approximately $22,000 to $12,000.

However, CRA is now taking the position that it can not remove the remaining approximately $12,000 because the period is “statute-barred” under the three-year reassessment limitation period.

The result is that CRA has apparently accepted that I was the eligible parent and that my ex-partner was not, but I am still being left with approximately $12,000 owing as a consequence of the original incorrect allocation of the CCB.

This is creating ongoing financial consequences for me.

I have outstanding tax returns that I have been reluctant to file because I understand CRA may apply any resulting refunds against the disputed $12,000 debt.

I also have a newborn daughter and am concerned that any CCB to which I am currently entitled for her could be applied against this disputed historical balance.

Therefore, I am effectively being prevented from accessing money and benefits that I believe I am legitimately entitled to because of a debt that arose from my ex-partner's historical claim and that CRA has subsequently acknowledged was based on an incorrect eligibility determination.

I am currently working with my Member of Parliament's office, whose staff have been communicating with CRA on my behalf. I have not yet received the actual written CRA decision explaining the statute-barred position.

CRA originally said I owed approximately $22,000.

After reviewing my evidence, CRA reduced that amount to approximately $12,000.

What statutory authority allowed CRA to make that $10,000 correction, and why does that same authority supposedly prevent CRA from making the remaining correction after determining that I was the solely eligible parent?

Does subsection 152(4.2) apply?

CRA's own published guidance discusses the ability to make certain reassessments/redeterminations beyond the normal three-year period.

Once I receive CRA's written decision:

Is the appropriate remedy a Notice of Objection, a request under subsection 152(4.2), taxpayer relief, or another mechanism?

CRA did not allow my Motor vehicle expenses claims “resonable allowance”

Back in April I received a review letter for my 2024/2025 Employment expenses as it relates to personal vehicle usage as a condition of employment. My employer provides me with a T2200, yearly. It states the accumulated (year) amount I was reimbursed for my mileage claims that I must submit each month, in order to be reimbursed for my use. It is NOT an allowance, and it’s not automatically sent to me. I have to keep a log and have it signed off at varying levels before I’m paid out. For 2024/2025 the reimbursement is anywhere between $.49-0.56 per KM.

I sent the CRA: logs, my insurance, licencing, repairs, & maintenance receipts. I sent my loan docs with my interest, gas receipts, etc. everything to show my workings.

Within a short period of time, they sent me back a letter stating they are NOT allowing my expenses. They cited I am in receipt of a non-taxable allowance that is REASONABLE. In review of the “reasonable” rate the CRA states on their website this is around $.70 per km, so I’m technically reimbursed below that rate.

I drive a minimum of 250km per month for employment, and I’ve driven as much as 600 km a month. I live in a small town and have a 12km round trip to work and back. In 8 years of owning my vehicle I’ve driven 98,000 km for personal and work. I’m driving an average of 3500 km yearly for work.

I’ve had the same job for 8 years as well. Bought my vehicle new, having paid $63k including my initial lease costs, then 5% interest on my $17,000 risidual at end of lease (vehicle had equity as I paid for 100,000km in depreciation, and used 40,000 km) just sold it for $15k and dropped it on a new one.

I feel like whoever did my review took one look at the 24 logs, 20 odd receipts abd said “not today” and if they actually looked close enough, I am not reasonably reimbursed, or does my T2200 say I receive an allowance.

I’m stumped! I work in government, in a health related field, and I’m one of 1200+ people who claim this yearly. It’s never been an issue, and none of my collegues had the issue either, some in my role 20+ years.

Do I file an objection, or is this a waste of time. I’m on the hook now for nearly $6000 in taxes. On top of the taxes my family already pays because I live in a crappy province where the provincial portion of tax is nearly on far with the federal amount we have to pay. I earn just shy of 6 figures.

Help and opinions are appreciated.

Travel expenses simplified vs detailed

Hello, if I am claiming travel expenses in my income tax, do I have to choose only 1 method to claim meal and transportation expenses? For instance, if I choose the simplified method for meals, I also have to use simplified for transportation? Am I allowed to use a mix of both? For instance, simplified for meals and detailed for transportation?

CRA Loan Forgiveness Issues

I applied for loan forgiveness in February and they denied me due to the dates. Tried again with same dates as coworkers (January 1st, 2025 to December 31, 2025). My coworkers were approved in April, I was not.

Fast forward to several more attempts and phone calls. And they are now saying I don’t qualify because I don’t work the summer months (like every other teacher). And I would need to reapply and say my dates are September to June. This means I’d get the money later every year than everyone else.

Also to add: I do curriculum work in July every year and I’m a principal so I work half of August.

Anyone else had these issues??

Owing CRA 10K - needing some advices on tax reassessment

I left Canada late November 2025, and had to file taxes manually from my country, then had my friend helped me mail my taxes. The NOA came back in July stating I'm owing them 10k, which isn't possible since my income was only around 45k. I did not have any investments, TFSA/RRSP or any other side businesses. I realized there might have been some miscalculations with my T1, so I applied for a reassessment. Aside from that, I've also filed another claim to request relief of interests. I have not heard back from them.

Will calling them directly help resolve this faster? Will they let me refile taxes and remove the false amount? I'm concerned even if the matter is dealt with, the interests still stand.

Any advice is appreciated!

Marital Status Optional?

I use a non-CPA accounting firm, but I have friends who use a CPA and it has me second-guessing whether I’ve been missing out on benefits.

They’ve told me that they have been filed as single for years, even while married or living together. Apparently, when one spouse has a high income and the other has little or no income, filing as single can significantly increase CCB and other income-tested benefits, especially with multiple children. They were also advised that going on EI during the winter while listed as single with dependants could result in higher benefits.

From what they’ve described, this doesn’t sound like a one-time mistake but it appears to have been done for multiple families over a number of years.

Considering the accountant providing this advice is a CPA, I’m wondering whether I’ve somehow missed out on a significant amount of benefits over the years by having everything reported based on our actual marital status. My friends basically describe this as one of the advantages of having a “good accountant,” while mine isn’t a CPA. Mine tells me to this is not possible but maybe he's stuck on rules that aren't enforced?

Cant Access CRA Account

Hello, I am posting this on behalf of my sister. We need advice on how to do this.

My sister is new in to Canada. She has created a CRA account and she put her initial phone number on it. However, she changed her phone number and the previous one she put on her CRA account is no longer valid. (She forgot to change/update her phone number on her CRA account)

Now here is the problem. My sister can no longer access her CRA account because the One Time Password (OTP) directly goes to her previous phone number that is no longer valid.

When we contacted many times the CRA via phone, they asked significant security questions that my sister does not have access because she cant login to her CRA account. All of the information the CRA Call Centre Agent are asking can only be get by logging into the CRA account.

We mailed a letter to CRA to change her phone number but every time we logged in, the phone number remained unchanged.

How to resolve this. Please. Thank you.

CRA Won’t Answer the Phone Because All Call Agents Are Busy

It is difficult to fathom that a Canadian federal agency cannot even answer a phone call or place the caller in a waiting queue because all available agents are busy. They need to hire more staffs. It is frustrating that callers are simply unable to access the service at all. I have never experienced this in other countries.

Edit:

- I never advocated for public services cut.

- I was never even given a chance to leave a message to get a call back. They said just call back or use the online services.

- I am actually surprised that many are actually okay with this based on the comments that I read. It is like our health care system. People are mostly okay with it until they are urgently in need of such service.

how likely are they going to waive penalty and interest for not prepaying taxes in instalments?

the situation is simple, i was a contractor, so that's why they assumed i will have pay this much tax again next year for 2026, but im actually umemployed, so i have 0 income. however, i do have stocks that may or may not result in a net tax owing of more than $3000.

so my question is, if i ignore the instalments, and i end up getting enough income from stocks that puts me at over 3k net tax owing, how likely is it that they would waive the penalty and interest for me on that basis?

on a side note, i know i can probably research this, but if someone can tell me this off the top of their head to save me some time, that would be much appreciated. i have a lot of RRSP contribution room, and i know i can put money in there to avoid, or rather delay, taxes. i believe banks give u the forms around feb or something? telling u how much income u made from ur investments? is there a calculator of some sort that i can use to input those numbers to see how much tax i owe, and how much money i need to put in my RRSP so that the net tax owing is less than 3k? lol and also what is the deadline to contribute to RRSP for previous year tax purposes?

Ei coming to an end soon. Please help!

My EI benefits are ending soon, and despite actively searching, I haven’t been able to find a job in my field. It has been almost a year, and I’m becoming increasingly worried about how I’ll support my family once my benefits end. Is there any way to request an extension of my EI benefits? I would really appreciate any advice or guidance.

Owe 48k during readjustment

In 2025 I owed ~48k in taxes. I paid this amount off in full but later found out I had made a mistake on my taxes. I used the CRA website to file a change to my taxes. This morning I got a new message from the CRA that said I owed them 48k in taxes which is what I originally paid. I verified that the CRA received my original tax payment so this isn't due to my original owing. CRA website shows that my adjustment is still in progress but this is very scary since I can't afford to pay another 48k.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Is this a mistake? Should I just keep waiting for the readjustment to complete or do I need to call them?

Edit: To give more information, no my change that I filed is not expected to change my amount owing. If anything it should result in a refund.

How to confirm CRA received a mailed T1 Adjustment (T1-ADJ) sent from abroad?

Hi all, hoping someone can share their experience with this.

I departed Canada on December 29, 2024, and my originally filed T1 return for 2024 did not include my departure date. I mailed a T1 Adjustment Request (T1-ADJ) to correct this on May 15, 2026, sent from my home country (India).

I have not received any update or any response from CRA. How to know if they have received the T1 adjustment form + other documents that I have sent from my home country?

CRA ignoring mp?

Hello,
I have reached out to my local MP for assistance with an issue I’m having with the CRA. My understanding is that the CRA is expected to respond to inquiries from Members of Parliament in a timely manner, but unfortunately, there has been no response to my MP’s inquiries so far.
My MP first contacted the CRA on June 3rd and followed up again on July 27th. I completely understand that an MP has limited authority over the CRA, and I’m not expecting my MP to be able to influence the outcome of my case. I’m simply hoping that everything is being handled properly and that my MP can do whatever is within her ability to assist or obtain an update.
At this point, I’m wondering what the appropriate next step is if the CRA continues not to respond. Is there anything further my MP can do to escalate the inquiry, or is there another avenue I should pursue when the CRA does not respond to an MP’s requests for information?
I appreciate any guidance you can provide. I understand that there are limitations to what an MP’s office can do, and I’m simply trying to make sure that I have exhausted the appropriate avenues and that my concerns are being properly followed up on.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

I need access to my restricted cra account but I have no clue which address is on file with them

I have no idea what is on file. I have moved around so much and even been homeless. If I request immediate access to my account and go to the document verification section for immediate access and upload my Id but the address doesn't match what I have on file, I don't believe it is going to, will they not accept it? Will I have to go through the contact them for access instead? I don't know what to do because I don't remember and I feel if I contact them I'm going to caught for fraud or something. In very lost on what to do and I need access because I need my teeth fixed with cdcdp I'm flat broke and apparently to get my cdcdp I need my NOA which I can't get without full CRA access. What is the best option for me here. Please help me

I'm reading and apparently if I call an agent to request access I will need an NOA to help verify my identity, especially if I can't supply the correct address. How am I supposed to supply an NOA if I can't get into my Cra account. Which has them. Am I just fucked forever?

Need help : Account locked

Need advice: CRA account locked due to suspected fraud
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has dealt with a locked CRA account.
My CRA account was locked due to a suspicious/fraud-related issue. I submitted all the required documents through the CRA Secure Drop Box in February.
In June, an assigned CRA agent called me, but unfortunately I missed the call. Since then, I’ve tried calling the agent back multiple times, but I haven’t been able to reach her.
I also received a letter asking me to submit the documents again, so I sent them again by fax as instructed. It has now been about two months, and I still haven’t received any update. The assigned agent is not answering my calls either.
I’m getting worried because I need access to my CRA account and want to make sure my documents were actually received and processed.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
What is the best way to escalate this or get another CRA agent/team to review my case? Should I contact the CRA complaints/Service Feedback process, my MP, or is there another department I should contact?
Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Debt with CRA

Looking for advice with CRA income tax debt. I filled out the monthly expense form to determine my payment amount and after essentials my leftover cash was determined to be $1300. The officer agreed to a temporary one month agreement of $1000 and said I need to call back in Sept to discuss a permanent arrangement.

The permanent arrangement she talked about would be over $2000 monthly- just over 50% of my monthly income.

Is that standard with the CRA? Not trying to avoid payment at all (I obviously need to repay) but over 50% of my income isn’t feasible and I won’t be able to pay my bills. Not sure if I should try and escalate to see if I can get someone else who is more reasonable.

Is this standard in everyone’s experience?
