This little trend of following politicians…

… to yell at while they ignore you for being an obnoxious dipshit and you post the sweet vids for the likes and shares…

Kinda hate it. I’m sorry that America has failed you to the point that you consider this asshattery to be gainful employment.

Missteps Mount in Justice Dept.’s Case Against Minnesota Anti-ICE Protesters

> Still, in a signal that prosecutors are somewhat concerned about bringing the case to trial, they have offered plea deals to 29 of the nearly 40 people facing indictment. Under the proposed agreement, defendants would plead guilty to a single misdemeanor charge and avoid any prison time, according to a draft shared with The New York Times.

> So far, however, none of the defendants have agreed to take the deal, according to defense lawyers.

Has the ICE pastor ever made a public statement?

So a settlement and new job are announced with zero detail on the underlying dispute. What happened here?

Hard for a university donor base to be excited about these kind of headlines.

[NY Times]: Twins' Parking Lot Is a Haven for 10,000 Campers (8/1/1971)

> BLOOMINGTON, Minn., July 31—For more than 10,000 people from about 20 states and three Canadian provinces, home this week end is the concrete parking lot at Metropolitan Stadium.

> In their trailers, motor homes, camper trucks, con verted buses and tents—ap proximately 2,000 units in all —the people have come to the Minnesota Twins' third annual Campers Weekend, an Unusual promotion in the era of Bat Day, Ball Day, Cap Day and Pantyhose Day.

> From all directions the tampers began arriving at the stadium parking lot Thursday night and they were still pulling in and es tablishing their temporary homes today as the Twins met the Yankees in the sec ond of the three‐game series.

> The only required cost to each family is a $3 fee for parking for the weekend. Tickets to the games, of course, are extra, but here is no rule that campers have to buy tickets at all.

Incoming U of I Students Required to Finance 6 Semester Hours of a Political Project

I'm sure telling incoming students that they will need to find the time and money to pay for two classes required to graduate will shoot the University of Iowa up the US News rankings among others.

I hope it includes the BBA students who have always had the 'out' for most of the liberal arts classes.

NOTE: the bill requires an additional six semester hours of 'civics' at all state institutions. So ISU, UNI students also get a price hike though they aren't required for those courses to be completed by the right wing think tank employment fund.

[Blum for The Athletic]: Andrelton Simmons was the best defender in baseball. Then he suddenly walked away.

Andrelton Simmons makes a return to baseball in the Mexican league:

>As he walked off the field, hours before his Dorados de Chihuahua were to play the Toros de Tijuana, he was approached for an interview. A chance to share his story, to fill in the blanks on a big league career that ended so abruptly that there has been little public understanding of the reason.

Simmons stepped away after his season with the Twins in 2021 and injury plus DFA-shortened 2022 with the Cubs. He talks about looking at the rehab from that injury, time away from baseball, some of his mental health struggles and returning to play in Mexico.

Short story: sometimes $72 million over the span of a ten year MLB career is plenty.

> When he’s done playing, that may be the last baseball fans see of him. It may take him a few more years, he said, but unlike several ex-big leaguers in this league, not past 40. He has no desire to coach, and if the last few years are any indication, no desire to stay in the game in any public way.

> “I want to enjoy retirement for real after,” he said.

WARNING: paywalled.

If you missed this last week, Dick Bremer was a great interview guest. Most of the episode was a bunch of stories about his career as a broadcaster with a few reminders that right now is a pretty good time to be a baseball fan. A few highlights from memory:

* Bremer talks about all of the ways Twins baseball has been broadcast, including terrible deals with the North Stars and the days of only broadcasting away games. (If it’s on TV, you won’t buy a ticket.)

* A fun bit about Spectrum airing daytime television, Twins and North Stars games and late night pornography. Bremer feared for a late game that required him to announce joining the late night feature “already in progress”.

* A few anecdotes about interviewing then working with Tom Kelly. (Along with a number of broadcast partners.)

Saw the Iowa Supreme Court ruling backing a wind project moratorium.

Strangely enough, “local control” was the subject of a lawsuit when Worth County _lost_ a lawsuit attempting to limit the placement of CAFO facilities in the early 2000s. _That_ ruling limited the ability of counties to regulate or restrict the placement of hog barns / lagoons or the working conditions.

Maybe the better question: “What’s The Matter With the Iowa Supreme Court?”
