Thank you!!

I’m leaving tomorrow but just wanted to say thank you for all the great suggestions for food in Rip City. I wish I could stay longer. Final meal tonight was at St Jack’s. Went for happy hour and it was just lovely. Thank you all for being such gracious and friendly hosts. Happy to return the favor if you’re ever in Greensboro NC. Cheers!

Question about Jacqueline

Visiting from North Carolina and Jacqueline came highly recommended. Looks like I’m SOL on reservations for the evening I can go (Monday 6/29) as I have to catch an early flight home the next day. How early would I need to queue up to get a seat for oyster happy hour? Can I stay to eat after oysters or is that frowned upon? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Loose tan doodle

If your golden doodle is loose in Sunset Hills, it just took off chasing a rabbit through my yard- last seen rounding the corner of W Market & Chapman St.

Casting technique videos

Wanted to drop this here. For new to tenkara anglers, folks that need a casting refresh or even seasoned anglers looking to add a few new tricks to their bag. This is a great teaching tool if you can’t get to Rob Worthing’s Oni School.
Check out casting from the Wisconsin Driftless tenkara campout. Also I highly recommend Rob’s book “Demon’s Game”!

Gazpacho

I’d love to hear from Spaniards. Soaked bread or no? Add a bit of paprika? Peppers?
It’s tomato and cucumber season in the SE US and I’ll make gazpacho weekly until September.

Northwest restaurant recs

Greetings from North Carolina! I’ll be visiting Portland in a little over 2 weeks and staying with a friend that lives in Northwest. I’d love to have a few restaurant recommendations for any meals. While I’ll eat anything (except foie gras!) I’m especially fond of seafood and Japanese cuisine. I hear pizza is also kind of a Portland specialty. Bonus points for really good bakeries open early for breakfast. $-$$$ My city has a plethora of solid Vietnamese, Middle Eastern and BBQ restaurants so I can skip that for now. Thanks in advance and really looking forward to my stay!

Help with salamander ID

Already tried Herps of NC. Sorry for the poor quality of the photo. Found in a large puddle near a stream in Panthertown. Maybe a spotted dusky salamander?

Patching advice

I have 3 small holes on the netting on the door of my Big Agnes Copper Spur. The holes are all in about a 1 inch area of each other. What’s the best way to patch this? I was thinking Noso patches on both sides of the netting stuck together. Thoughts? Glad I found this on a shakedown trip this weekend.

A little brain reset

For me, it’s not all about catching fish. It’s the total package including a great day out with a fishing buddy.

Tube coffee

I’m flying into Portland OR next month to camp/fish near Bend. I was trying to think of a few small things I could take with me in my duffle and social media has been reading my thoughts again. Tube coffee- worth it? Palatable? I drink coffee black and was just looking for an easy stream side alternative to packs of instant.

Traveling with gear

I’m flying from NC to Portland OR next month to camp and fish. I’ve got a large size (30” length) Orvis rod case that I’d like to take as a carry on. I’d prefer to carry the case on if possible as it will have all my fishing gear in it minus my wading pants/boots. This is my first time flying with fishing AND camping gear. Trying to economize as checking bags is so $$$. I plan to do a packing shakedown soon. I also have a large REI duffle and my 50L backpack. Thanks in advance for tips.

My first Wisconsin Driftless adventure

This was the first time fishing low gradient moving water. First day was frustrating- cold, windy and I was tired from the long drive. Day 2 was amazing! Had a buddy who was local take us out to an amazing stream that was boiling with bugs and brown trout. Got an hour on day 3 before I had to hit the road and caught a little brookie right where he was supposed to be. This was definitely not my last visit to fish with cows!

Crappie on the fixed line

Took my nephew and son out for a quick urban pond excursion this morning. I wasn’t expecting crappie but my nephew hooked one (first time fixed line fishing) and I got this one on a black wooly bugger. Fun fish and put a bend in the rod!
