How do you handle your geko?

So I have a little geko who is probably around 3 to 4 months old. I am trying to do the choice handling. They have gotten into my hand 3 times but each time they wanna run up my arm. I have stopped them but one time it was really scary because it jumped but luckily it was back into the tank. I think we have both were traumatized. How do you handle your geko? Is there a way to make sure it doesnt run up my arm? Is it just because he is little? Will he calm down when he gets older?

I stuck some Spanish moss through the holes in the cholla wood I have in its tank. Is this safe for a juvenile? Google says yes, but want opinions from the experts on here. I did not put it on the hot side to be on the safe side.
