My Owl3D Shift Arrived!! Glasses-Free 3D for $499!!!

My Owl3D Shift Arrived!! Glasses-Free 3D for $499!!!

Just got my Owl3D Shift, haven't even opened the box yet. This is the newest "glasses free" 3D monitor to launch at $499, which is an insane price given how expensive things have been the last 2 years. It's 4K stereo 3D, but only a 14" display, and 60Hz at that, so not necessarily competing with the Samsung Odyssey 3D, but the price is quite reasonable and I'm hyped to see how the quality looks. Also, before people start spamming the comments, there is a lot of misinformation going around. The monitor AFAIK *does not* require a subscription to function. Owl3D (company that makes the monitor) uses a subscription fee for their app, but customers on the Kickstarter received a lifetime license to the software included. You may need to buy separately if you weren't part of the Kickstarter, but, even then, I was told you can use the kit in SBS 3D mode (or as a 2D monitor) if you do not wish to subscribe, or want to use other 3rd party software (like Rendepth, which I will test later for compatibility). Any one else go theirs yet and want to share what you think?

I've updated my desktop media player to support JPEG-XL natively

Just did a huge 3.0.0 update on my 3D media player, Rendepth. One of the major new features is native import and export for modern image file formats: JXL, AVIF, and WebP. The app is mainly used to convert regular photos into stereoscopic 3D (with a wide range of hardware support) but the 3D features can also simply be disabled and the app will function like a standard desktop media player. There are some advanced features, like Blu-ray 3D disc playback, that require a Pro License, but almost all the photo/image features are available on the base free version, and you can also play 2D video files for free as well. Note that I've integrated the JPEG-XL libraries natively, so this does not depend on the OS having JXL support on the system. Cross-platform and works on macOS, Linux, and Windows. Hope y'all enjoy. https://rendepth.com

Zondision @ PAX West 2026. Triple-Screen "Glasses-Free" 3D Surround. Extremely Low Ghosting. Multi-View Video Support. Mixed Reality, and More...

Was able to stop by the Zondision booth at PAX West in Seattle and the stuff I saw was insane. First off, the ghosting on the ZIMO1 is extremely low. Of course not zero (if you look closely) but it's practically not an issue. They demoed Kena with the torch in a cave level, and really it looked amazing and clear (will try to upload a video in a comment). They had X-Plane running with triple-screen (similar to Nvidia 3D Vision Surround) and it was an amazing experience. Granted, there was some ghosting/flickering at the off-angles (for the side screens) but overall it was super immersive. Also saw multi-view stereo 3D video, where 3 people could watch the same video and all get 3D (meaning not using head-tracking). That was cool. And the pop-out on the mixed reality app was pretty sick. Overall just amazing stuff. Plus people on the show floor seemed genuinely excited for 3D, and I saw groups of people stopping and playing the games for a solid 15 - 20 minutes at a time. Really a great showing.

Odyssey 3D Monitor LOWEST PRICE EVER!!

The Samsung Odyssey 3D is at it's lowest price ever (ignoring student discount, etc.) and just under $900. Not sure how long this sale will last, I checked and appears live on the US Amazon right now.

Just Hear Me Out...

So I always seem to hear the same voice in my head. But just had a weird thought. What if she's a real person, either in this world, or some other time and space, and *I'm* the voice in her head?

NEXT-GEN 3D Game Conversion w/ Rendepth 3.0.0

Just pushed out a big update for my ReShade effect, Rendepth. It's a small algorithm adjustment, but makes a massive difference in the picture quality. Depth range has been expanded, and the focus is tighter now, so the image looks more clear at various settings levels. It's designed so the defaults of 50 for all 3 sliders should be optimal for most games and not need much adjustment, but adjusting slightly can give more depth or clearer focus (try to stay within 25 - 75 for all sliders, and only the center one can be 100 if the other two are lower). See the video above has minimal halos and artifacts compared to the last update. This was tested on an Acer Predator 27", but should work the same with the Samsung Odyssey 3D or any legacy 3D displays Rendepth supports. Thanks.

Implementing "Radiance Hints" in OpenGL (2011 Global Illumination Technique)

Just added Radiance Hints to my OpenGL engine, Degine. The paper is originally from 2011 (but I used a 2014 extension of the method with occlusion). Based on a regular grid array of probes, similar to other environmental lighting techniques, but here it captures directly to spherical harmonics when baking. So run-time performance is extremely fast since it's just a few SH evaluations and blending. For this Sponza scene, there are around 600 probes, and it takes about 10 seconds to bake.

It's Been 3 Years Since LearnOpenGL. NEVER GIVE UP!!

Been doing games and graphics (as a hobby) for around 20 years, but mostly with stock engines and some experiments using DirectX and Vulkan. Started on my current project 3 years ago, never having tried OpenGL in my life. Images show the latest update from my engine, and what I accomplished on the first day of reading LearnOpenGL back in 2023. Never give up!!

"YOU SHOULD PAY AN ARTIST" actually, no, *you* should pay an artist

This was the first episode of a series of commentary videos I started doing recently for my YouTube channel on the AI-hate debate. This one focuses on the common complaints about not paying artists and copyright law. There are a few others after that on the same playlist. Figured this community might "get it" and also brings up some points and rebuttals that may be helpful in working through the debate. Thanks in advance.

Improved Anaglyph Color Filters and Gamma Boost on Rendepth 3D Game Conversion

Just pushed out an update on my ReShade effect (Rendepth) which greatly improves the anaglyph mode. Now there are "Accurate" and "Vivid" anaglyph modes, with an optional advanced setting for gamma boost. This uses newer research from the past 10 years to provide more accurate colors for standard red/cyan 3D glasses that are optimized for LCD screens. Screenshots show the 4 combinations available. Can download through ReShade now, free and open-source software. Setup guide on my blog: https://cybereality.com/pragmata-stereo-3d-mod-setup-guide/

MIXTAPE in 3D!!! (SBS 3D) w. Rendepth

Just got a new patch for Rendepth that fixes MIXTAPE for the letterbox (and pillarbox) 3D cutscenes. Also works on Clair Obscur, and perhaps other Unreal Engine titles.

OpenGL HDRI Cubemap Stereo 3D Reprojection

This is a demo of the new stereoscopic 3D display mode on my custom engine Degine using OpenGL and C++. In particular, I'm showcasing depthmap reprojection 3D conversion of HDRI cubemaps, in a way that composites in world-space with native 3D rendered meshes. The video needs red/cyan anaglyph 3D glasses to view correctly (though you can watch in 2D, it might not make sense). There is also a SBS 3D version of the video (linked from there on the top right) if you have a newer 3D monitor (or VR headset) that can play SBS videos.
