Christopher Cross - Never be the Same (on Vinyl)
This is the correct way to listen to this awesome song and album... record scratches and all. So many great memories!

This barely squeaked on the boat, but I think the guys got this wrong. It's clearly yachty to me, what am I missing? Yachty bounce, check, yachty instrumentation, check, love fool lyrics, check... I know it's 1992 but it really doesn't sound like 1992 IMO... it's very much a return to his earlier style and I'd probably give it a 65 easy.
Wanted to share this analysis of one of CC's lesser talked about songs from his debut album.
He compared Larry Carlton's guitar solo on this to John Coltrane which is great praise indeed.
The song just missed out on essential, it was rated long ago I think this gets essential today. Just goes to show you how the best examples of yacht rock have this level of musical sophistication.
This is mainly toward the people over at yacht rock nation as well as the Sirius XM fans that sometimes lurk on here.
"Flow State" by Keith Urban is NOT a yacht rock album as much as he wants to claim that it is.
It's a bunch of modern country covers of classic songs, and none of them are worth listening to over the original.
The one original song is, again, mostly a modern country song with modern country production. All I needed to hear was that twangy guitar in the intro to realize that no, this ain't yacht. Add to that Keith Urban's absolutely soulless, white bread vocals... ugh... The chorus is better with Michael McDonald... he sounds a bit better here then on the Charlie Puth Song... so at best the song is a modern country song with a somewhat yachty chorus.
I personally can't wait until the guys tear this song and the whole album to shreds. Sorry for the negativity here but I feel this has to be said.
I’ve seen there’s been a bunch of “The Movies” style clones released in the last few years but on all them it seems like nobody thinks that it comes close to the classic game “The Movies” which I still play on occasion. Is there any modern movie studio tycoon games that you’d recommend for fans of The Movies?
This track features Jeff Porcaro on drums and is pretty damn yachty for 1988. The title translates to “I am a Loser” so that’s also in the spirit of yacht!
Hey Charlie Puth, THIS is how you make modern yacht rock.
Would be nice if the guys let this song jump the line also as this is IMO the counterpoint to Love in Exile.
Peabo Bryson passed away today at the age of 75.
I grew up listening to his songs and he was an amazing R&B vocalist.
He's got 3 songs on the boat, including "Give Me Your Love" linked here.
R.I.P. :(
With "Love Life" making the boat today, could this be the next song from her 1981 album to make the boat? This one's definitely one of her more rock-leaning track but still smooth and grooving with not one but two guitar solos by both Steve Lukather and Buzz Feiten.
Edit: This song was posted here a year ago, but I'll post it again in the hopes someone submits it I think this could go real high!
I know there's tons of romance/erotic focussed LitRPG out there but for the most part it's pretty bad.
Is there any LitRPG that has romantic and or sexual content that is actually good?
Yes I’m being completely serious here.
I’m have no experience or knowledge of the occult so I thought I would try to ask people who practice. Could there be an actual curse on the New York Mets baseball team and if so, how can it be reversed or mitigated?
The things that are happening to the team is reaching levels that are beyond rational explanation IMO.
Irish times article on Cross for his Irish tour coming later this month.
One thing that struck me here is the comment from the frontman of Yacht Rock Revue who considers yacht rock to be more of a feeling then any strict definition which is of course just wrong, but is unfortunately what the general public seems to believe.
I do like hearing that Cross declined a million dollar offer to play at Mar-a-Lago... he's a man of my own heart. The article also reminded me that we almost lost him to Guillan-Barre syndrome caused by Covid. The fact that he made it through that to now tour the world and see his music finally get the recognition it deserves almost brings tears to my eyes.
This modern band has a few songs that could make the boat and this is definitely one of them IMO... it's pretty smooth and pretty yachty... fairly true to the period also, doesn't sound too modern. The synths at the end are weird but other then that I'd put this one on the boat pretty easily.
Just posting this for the lols... it's just basically the original song with Urban's vocals and a few countrified guitar riffs. I guess it's technically yachtier then that other song he did with MM, but why bother with a cover that does nothing much new when you can just listen to the superior original song?
This had to be fairly recent... love to see it.
It’s on at 29 due to the Michael Jackson biopic. It’s too bad most people don’t realize this is essentially a Toto song. I don’t follow the hot 100 much but when was the last time a yacht song charted?
Working with ChatGPT lately I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s almost to the level of sophistication of the computer on Star Trek TNG. I mean what is the Star Trek computer but a highly advanced LLM? The next step which is coming sooner than you think is essentially the Star Trek Holodeck, but in VR rather than physical space. It won’t be long before I can put on my VR headset and just ask ChatGPT to:
“Put me on the deck of a luxury yacht sailing on perfectly calm tropical waters with a margarita in my hand and Sailing by Christopher Cross playing in the background”
And within seconds a fully interactive scene is sent to my headset and I’m basically experiencing a holodeck program. With enough compute power and a a bit stronger model and this is within grasp.
It seems like there's some yacht rock superfans within the screenwriter community because Christopher Cross and yacht rock appear on yet another modern TV show, this time the peacock show M.I.A.... apparently the character listens to yacht rock to help him with his mental disorder which hits hard for me since it helps me greatly with my anxiety.
So now we've got Chair Company, Beauty, Euphoria, and now M.I.A... four recent shows mentioning CC and yacht rock.
Never knew this existed until now... this is George Benson with an (IMO) excellent smooth jazz rendition of Sailing by Christopher Cross.
Once again Sirius XM butchers yacht rock once again with this dumb list of best yacht rock guitar solos.
While I fully agree with Jay Graydon's solo on Peg and possibly Benson on Breezin... you got two nyacht songs, and I think they could have found a better example then Baby Come Back... for instance my favorite solo, Christopher Cross on Ride like the Wind...
What other YR guitar solos would you put on this list rather than what Sirius has here?
