Most important part would be a sleeve at the plate which would allow the rod to plunge in and out, as dust/mur right at the plate will enter into the transmission. Second important part would be shielding linkage connections around the rotating pieces. Outer linkage controls plunge in and out of the flange, inner linkage plunges in and out to force the rotation up and down of the flange.
