technical stop in Montego Bay. should I complain ?

Edit: I already took the flight. It was June 20

Apparently this might be due to re-routing bigger planes for the World Cup. Should I complain about this ?

Beware if you buy a direct flight to Canada from Air Transat. It is quite possible that a few days before departure, they will turn it into a flight with a stopover. It seems a bit scammy to me, since I selected this booking because it seemed like the best option. This is a routine thing that someone warned about in a Peru travel Facebook group. I don't think they should sell "direct flights" if they can't guarantee it. Here is the text of their email (original itinerary was 8:25 to 17:45):

We regret to inform you that due to a last-minute aircraft unavailability, we are forced to modify the type of aircraft operating your flight. This aircraft change requires a mandatory technical stop in Montego Bay (MBJ) to allow for refueling. We understand that such a situation is never pleasant and assure you that we have done everything possible to minimize any negative impact.

Your flight TS151 is now scheduled to depart Lima (LIM) at 10:50 local time on 20JUN2026, and to arrive in Montréal (YUL) at 22:15 local time. We recommend downloading our App or consulting our website to stay informed of any further updates.

If you are at risk of missing your connecting flight booked on the same ticket, please rest assured that our teams will make every effort to rebook you on the next available flight, so you can continue your journey as soon as possible.

beginner questions

Tomorrow will be last day surfing Makaha beach in Lima, Peru (for now). Suddenly I have a bunch of beginner questions. I've been surfing a few months, although lately not as much as before. I did take a lesson a few weeks ago, and the coach told me that I should start surfing a fibre board (8'2). I do like the fibre board better.

My usual approach to surfing here has been to paddle out as far to the outside as I can. Then I try to position myself where I am not likely to hit anyone if I catch a wave. My main concern with the fibre board is that I don't want to accidentally hit someone with it.

At least twice at this beach, I found myself getting stuck in a seemingly endless series of waves, a bit further north of where the locals surf. I'm wondering if maybe I'm surfing the wrong wave LOL. Sometimes the only way to get out of that area seems to be to basically paddle parallel to the beach, or surf back towards the beach and paddle back out on the southern end.

My main question is this: how important is it to look over my shoulder and see where the peak is, in order to surf the wave properly ? I believe there are multiple waves/spots at this beach, although the best surfers seem to go right. I feel like the main thing holding me back right now is that instead of staying near the peak/pocket, I am ending up in the white water.

anyone ever saved a bird from drowning ?

This happened to me today, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this ?

I was at Makaha beach in Lima, Perú this morning. I'm a beginner-ish, just tried a fiber board for the third time.

I see a bird get hit by a wave, struggle a bit, and I paddle over and find it, head in the water, not moving. I put it on my board. Start heading to the beach. Looks dead and I don't really feel like paddling all the way back in. I put it back in the water, and then it wakes up, but doesn't look so good. Dammit, I say to myself: "alright, I will try to save this bird". Put it back on the board and continue heading in. In the end, I am so baffled by this situation, imagining all the people on the beach looking at me with a bird on my board. A wave hits from behind toppling us both over. I give up on the mission, and my last view of my bird friend is it floating in the water closer to the beach, looking more or less OK. No idea if it survived. After some research I think it was a Belcher's gull, although it seemed bigger than the ring-billed gulls I am familiar with in Canada.

Intermediate Latin American fiction book suggestions

Please share some book suggestions. I am reading "Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal" in Spanish. It occurred to me that I would rather be reading something with more Latin American content. Ideally a book that is easily available used, at a similar difficulty level. I'm in Lima, Perú. Gracias in advance 😊

Edit: I guess I like the Harry Potter writing style because it is more action-based than descriptive, meaning simple language for my level
