Any free versions of the New Yorker's "The Mystery of Dashiell Hammett"?
Sounds like an interesting article, but of course, you have to be a subscriber to read it. Is there anyone here with any links for free access?

Never gave Steve Allen much thought--just kind of lumped him in with the umpteen easy-listening records from the 60's, but this 1967 record is great. Light n breezy, all high-quality originals, featuring Steve on piano and melodica, also with Laurindo Almeida on guitar and Bud Shank on sax and flute. It's not a party record (unless it's an extremely mellow party). If you need your blood pressure instantly lowered, give this album a spin.
“Can someone take out the guy eating a hamburger in the background?”
”Can someone make my hair look better?”
”Can someone make the scenery nicer, maybe add a waterfall?”
Yeah, someone can do those things. But its not real. It’s phony.
I wish people could embrace authenticity. I wish they could embrace the guy eating the hamburger, their hairstyle gone awry, or the blandness of their surroundings. It’s these “imperfections” which add character to photographs.
Unfortunately, many people feel the compulsion to “engineer“ reality. They post pics to advertise how “perfect“ their lives are. The actual reality—the things that actually matter—gets covered up.
DVDs are out there for some her 40's and 50's Mexican movies, but none that I've seen have English subtitles. Wish Kino Lorber or some such company would make a box set.
