Recess from 3 to 3:25pm...wtf?

My son is in 4th grade. The school he attends has 4th and 5th grade doing recess at the end of the day: 3-3:25pm and school gets out at 3:30pm. In Texas it is 10,000 degrees outside at 3pm. Naturally, they cancelled outdoor recess yesterday due to the temp being over 100F. I suspect they won't have outdoor recess until October if that is the criteria. I'm pretty annoyed about this late recess because I think it defeats the purpose of recess, especially for kids with as much energy as my guy (I was the same way, always moving and fidgeting). I think recess is a chance for kids, boys especially, to get the energy out. They get a break from academics and reset their brains for more learning...

They did this same thing last year for my 5th grader, and back then his teacher told me proudly that they had fought hard to get this time slot..... As much as I like the teachers at his school, I suspect this is a selfish move by them because it doesn't seem to benefit the kids at all and I think it just makes the end of the school day easier for the teachers... IDK. I had beef with the teachers and principal previously because they were letting kids (my older son especially) have unsupervised time on a class laptop at recess if they chose. I put an end to that quickly because I felt like that was such an awful idea and because I'm a dad who cares about my kids physical well-being as well as the educational side. My kid was mad about it but he got over it.

Does anyone have feelings about this recess time slot? I'm looking for a good argument to back me up. I think I'm gonna raise a stink, but I don't want the teachers to feel like one of their students has a dad who's gonna fuck up the good thing they have going....

Is calling anyone at AISD an actual thing?

My son is new to AISD and there has definitely been some sort of paperwork/registration error on the part of ASID. The portal doesn't work for my wife, my son isn't connected to her portal. I cannot make my own portal. We are definitely missing communications from the school and the district (not in spam, we checked). AISD transportation department had his name, but no address so they couldn't tell me anything about busses (I know there are major issues with that rn) I went to the school and they couldn't help except to tell me that they did have some completely random cedar park address (some warehouse) associated with my son. I got that corrected (maybe?), but I just know this isn't the full extent to the issue.

I've been calling the school and nobody answers. I call the customer support number and nobody answers. The machine puts you on hold, and yesterday I spent 1.5hrs with that terrible hold music on until it finally just hung up on me. AISD IT department doesn't answer. I've submitted three service requests online, gotten confirmation that they were sent, but no response.

Is this just how it is going from a small charter to the big district?

Does anyone have any tips for getting my stuff sorted, or do I just need to wait?

Visiting my mom, brought my kids and bikes....

Howdy Yall, I'm visiting my mom in Fairfax from Texas. I brought my two little Texans (8 and 10.999 years old). We ride daily in Austin, and I am really trying to get in some good rides with them while we are here. They can easily do 5 or 8 miles in Austin ( only a few hills) and I want to see if y'all had any good suggestions. I know the mall is gonna be insane thanks to the 4th of July, but I might haul them down there anyway to see the madness. I also saw a lot of people on this sub talking about Rock Creek Park, so that's probably on the list. Finally, I was thinking of doing the C and O canal. I think we might see if we can bring the bikes in on the subway (we are near Vienna)

Does anyone have any suggestions for us? Like where to hop on any of these trails or even "don't go there"

Could this be a New World Screw worm fly? (Austin, TX)

We are in Austin, TX. My wife saw him, I caught him with my manly hunting skillz. It is alive in a gallon ziplock bag. Pics of him under my kid's microscope. One of the pictures is of it flipped on its back...you can really see the bright yellow/orange of the face.

What do y'all think?

White guy asks a "black people's hair" question...

I operate a BNB in my back yard. We recently had a black guy stay with us. When cleaning the apartment after he left I found an insane amount of teeny tiny hairs all over... In the sheets, on the floor when sweeping, all over the bathroom (sink, tub, bath mat) etc. This has sort of happened with white (mostly girls) as well, but this guy had these hairs that were the tightest little curls. The curls were so tight that they became latched into all the towels, wrapped around and twisted into the little fuzz of the towels. I washed the towels twice but the hairs were latched in tight and I had to pick them all out by hand ... Don't judge...towels and linens are one of my biggest expenses and throwing them out sucks. I have had a few guests since that guy, and despite my *absolutely thorough* cleaning I have still found a few hairs when sweeping the floor. I am guessing that they have latched into the fibers in the rug. I have aggressively swept and vacuumed the rug a few times, but they just keep coming. We have had black people stay with us before and this wasn't an issue. I'm trying very hard not to sound racist. If I had friends I'd lie and say some of my best friends are black...

So...the question is, do some black people just have their hairs attached to everything in their homes?

ISO blackberry seeds

Does anyone know where I could buy bulk blackberry seeds locally or localish? I'd definitely be looking for those Brazos blackberries or similar. I want the ones with the insane amounts of thorns. I can't seem to find anything. I'd like to seed a large area. Any leads would be appreciated.

Who just had their three yellow bmx bikes stolen? What about your massage table?

Just watched two dudes walk back behind the IBC bank on Cesar Chavez with three identical yellow bmx bikes and a portable massage table..... Am I stereotyping, yeah, probably... but.... seemed a bit sus (that means "suspicious" to my fellow olds)

On the other hand, I bet the massages are affordable

Anyone else experience occasional sensitivity to bright light?

I am wondering if what I have been experiencing is something anyone else has experienced....

Every so often when I go outside my pupils seem to either not contract or even dialate open and I get overwhelmed by the brightness outside. It happens on sunny days and even sometimes overcast days. My eyes will hurt like crazy and I either have to squint or just close my eyes until it goes back to normal. This usually lasts like five minutes or so. I have never been able to check to see if my pupils are dilated wide open or what, but it feels like it by how painful the light can be. I have tried to take a selfie of my pupils but it always comes out hilariously bad and I can't seem to open my eyes wide enough to get a photo. One time I had to stand behind my car in the parking lot with my eyes shut for probably ten minutes before I could stand the discomfort and open them. It feels like having a bright flash light jammed into my face after being in the dark.

I had optic neuritis a long time ago and my left eye never fully recovered from it. I think I've got 80-85% vision in my left eye, my right eye wasn't injured. This is not a new symptom. It has been going on for the last couple of years, but it didn't start until maybe a decade since I had the optic neuritis, so I'm thinking it might not be related.

My neurologist didn't really have anything to tell me and my ophthalmologist was also kinda low on info. Both of them essentially shrugged because it had been going on randomly for a while before I ever thought to bring it up and so they had no way to know if it was associated with new lesions or what. I've been kinda stable for the last five or so years... Symptoms have progressed somewhat but no new lesions....

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
