Increase in drive failures since upgrading to 7.3.1?

Just taking the temperature of the community. I have an array of 2 parity+9 data drives. On average I would lose one drive maybe every year or longer.

Since upgrading to 7.3.1 2 months ago, I have lost 3 drives. I'm probably just seeing root causes that aren't there, but has anyone else experienced more drive failures since upgrading to 7.3.1 (I upgraded from 7.2)?

Pi-hole IoT lists?

I have a separate vlan for my IoT devices and nothing else uses it. Anyone have any good block lists I can use for that LAN?

Parity drive speed?

I was doing some maintenance and replacing a dead drive, and I happened to notice my 2 parity drives were different. One is 7200rpm, and the other is a 5400. Does drive speed matter with parity drives? Is it better for performance to have 2 7200 drives for parity, or have them out in the array?

How many pay for Frigate+, and what do you really get for it?

I am migrating my doorbell over to an RSTP model, and I was curious about the frigate+ stuff. I've been using the standard frigate on my unraid server with the Coral GPUs for a couple of years, and have been happy.

For those of you that have frigate+ (or had it and got rid of it), what are some of the things you learned about it? Is it worth it to help better my detection? I currently run 9 cameras.

Matter over thread vs Matter over Wifi and networks?

I just recently got a bunch of Ikea matter over thread devices, and set them up using my primary network, because it was easier and that is where my border routers are. I also have a few Matter over WiFi devices that I am configuring.

I already have a separate WiFi and subnet set up for some cameras I use. My question is specific to the Matter over WiFi devices. Since they do not need thread, can I configure another 'fabric' (yes, I know, thread is IPv6 and a mesh, Matter over WiFi is just IPv4 and no mesh) in the separate IoT WiFi network, and still have the thread network on my main network?

My thread devices connect to an Ikea Diragera, Google Hub, and my Home Assistant server with the ZBT antenna. The Home Assistant server can see both subnets, and acts as my primary Matter server.

MMW: The reflecting pool will be drained and patched, but left empty, for July 4th so it stays blue.

By July 4th date it will be patched, and look terrible. The evidence is that they have no other way if Trump wants his 'American Flag Blue' photo op.

JD had cancer for the last 8 months, but he still managed to get up in my chair to keep an eye on me.

JD was only 10 years old, and I lost him today when he went in for cancer surgery. He stuck with me through 2 major health incidents and my father passing a couple of years ago. I literally got out of the hospital a couple of months ago, and he seemed to hold on until my rehab was done.

First me, now my dog....

I lost my leg about 4 years ago. Today I took my dog to the vet to get his front leg amputated. He had a huge cancerous mass near his shoulder, and over the last month or so his leg was basically just a club or a kickstand.

It's odd how much guilt I felt taking him in the morning. I know exactly what he will be going through, but he had no choice in the matter. He's 10 years old, so this isn't going to be a long term fix. I am just hoping this helps him ease his pain for whatever time he has left.

Has anyone else had to do the same with their pet? Any advice? I'm terrified of how he's going to be when I pick him up in a few hours.

The vet tried to explain that he will have to probably take a special pain medication called "gabapenten". I just smiled and knocked on my leg. Told him that much I understand.

Work anniversary made me reflect back today

I was looking through my facebook feed today, and I noticed one of my millennial friends posting about receiving a 5 year recognition from work. FIVE years. I thought to myself that I've had projects at work that lasted longer than that.

So, I decided to check my start date in the HR system. I started working for a company back in college. Over the years my division was sold off to another company, that went bankrupt, and my original company absorbed us back. Then, again, my division was sold off to another company, where I still work.

36 years. My start date just passed a couple of weeks ago, and I've stuck around for 36 years. Sure, I've moved to different locations, and changed job titles a few times, but I couldn't believe my HR system still records my start date as 1990. Almost a decade more than half my life.

My last work 'participation trophy' was at 15 years I think. I know I'm a unicorn for most people. Believe me, it wasn't easy. Several times I was furloughed for a few weeks or not given any raises for a decade.

Canes?

I don't need to use a cane, but I like to have one with me just in case. I'm tired of looking at the same CVS aluminum canes, or the 4 legged ones, or the ones on the infomercials at night. I'd like a cool looking wood one with a nice handle. I see some of the stock in Amazon, but I am not blown away.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for a cool cane? I'm not talking fake ruby pimp cane. I'd like something functional, just not 'medical'. Bonus if I can get it is a slightly taller size since I'm 6'4".

Suggestions on a router with remote admin for aging parent?

My mother lives about an hour away. In a couple of months she is getting a new service provider, so I figured that would be the time to update her 10 year old router with something newer. I currently use ASUS at my home, but I am not married to the option. Every once and a while she calls me to tell me the TV's not working, or her ipad is 'broken'. I'd like to be able to log in remotely to the router to check it, and reboot it if necessary. Minimal number of devices, 10-15 Wifi devices and one laptop wired right next to the router. Coverage is for about 1200 sqft.

What's a fairly cheap, reliable Wifi router with remote admin capabilities that I can set up for her, and help me not have to drive out every other weekend just to explain she needed to reboot? Also, something that is still receiving security updates.

EDIT: I am not looking for a solution for remote access. I already have the ability to remote desktop to a machine on her network. I'm looking for suggestions for a cheap simple modern router that has remote admin in case I can't get to the desktop.

Is there any setup yet for locally hosted music and voice control?

I have a huge library of music in my server, but I still have yet to find a way to use Google or Alexa or Siri to respond to "Play Nirvana 'Come as You Are' from my library". They all want me to go to paid services. Is there a homebrew solution that will allow this for my local library yet?

Question about HA Matter hub and Google?

I have a ZBT-2 hooked up to my HAOS VM, and it seems to work fine. I also have a Dirigera router from Ikea, and a Google Hub 2. Finally, to add to all this mess, I also have Apple Home. No Apple hub devices, just my ipad.

About my Google Hub. I have added the credentials into HA, and I see it in the 'Thread' card and part of my preferred network, but I don't see any Google Hub in the Matter devices. Is it supposed to be there?

I would like to have HA be the master of my devices, but I want to use Google for voice integration. What is the proper sequence for adding matter devices?

Trying to decipher Matter over Thread and Matter over IP configurations

I have a dedicated VLAN for my IoT devices, but I am trying to figure out how to have both Matter over Thread and Matter over IP working.

My primary network is where my Dirigera, and my HA Thread router are. I also have a Google Hub 2, which is currently logged into the VLAN. I can see both fabrics in my HAOS system, but I can't make a unified fabric, because of the different subnets.

I could move the Google Hub over to my main network, but then any Matter over IP devices I commission (Tapo/govee) will then exist in my primary network where I don't want them. I am not concerned about the Thread devices since they are IPv6. My Dirigera and my HA are ethernet and plugged into my primary network. My IoT network is wifi only.

What do I do here? Can I keep Google on the IoT network and publish Matter IP devices over there, and then keep Matter thread devices on my primary? Will the fabrics 'talk' to each other and let me use them all?

How should I handle the two different type of Matter devices?

Hey devs, instead of asking us for examples of the bug, why not ask who DOESN'T have the bug. I'm sure it's probably no one. We've burned enough quills.

Cleaning Google Home?

I am trying to integrate Google Home with my Home Assistant system. I made a mistake an added a Matter Server to my HA, and synced it to Google. Now I have over 400 entries in Google Home. Every aspect of all my devices are now visible to GH. It's way too much. I just want to use Google for voice, so I only need to expose about 60-70 items.

I've tried deleting my home and creating a new one, but even after turning the Matter server off, when I create a new home, everything comes back. How do I 'reset' GH so I can start fresh? At this point it's easier to add in items than it is to try to remove/hide everything.

What am I missing here? I have a Google Hub that I am using to create my Matter over Thread network. I add a Matter over Thread plug to Google home, and it works fine. Then I try to add it to HA, and I can't get it to recognize. I've used the HA app on both my iphone and an android tablet, but it never seems to work using the pairing code Google Home gives me in the Matter devices integration.

Does my HA server have to have a thread radio attached in order for devices to be seen in HA?

I thought I was onto something the other day and installed the HA Matter Hub add on. I was able to create a bridge to Google home, and then share all my HA only devices to Google, but it seems like it is one way. I can't see any of the items that are only in Google Home.
