I was curious how much XP I could get in chapter 1... managed level 22

I was curious how much XP I could get in chapter 1... managed level 22

You can get a lot more XP than I expected. I had to kill every monster you can get to and beat up every human in the camps. Tried to maximize XP from quests. You can summon and kill your own creatures for extra XP! Got 5 summon skeleton scrolls from the Fog Tower and that netted 4,000xp!

While it was a nice experiment, I'd never recommend anyone to play like this. It takes a looong time, is tedious and will make the subsequent chapters feel barren.

Finally... PEACE!

The fact that no one reacts to me executing Mud in the middle of the Old Camp confirms to me everyone is relieved he won't speak a word ever again.

How to effectively fight groups as a mage in G1?

I thought I'd have an easy time clearing Orc Town, but it didn't go as cleanly as I'd like.

Rain of Fire takes so long to cast and doesn't do that much damage. Storm of Fire (the 4th circle aoe) I can spam, but it doesn't always CC the orcs with the burning animation, so eventually they close in.

My solution was to pop a speed potion, aggro a group and cast Wave of Ice, the Rain of Fire and repeat WoI > RoF until everything's dead.

I mean it worked, but didn't feel that satisfying. And against the orc shamans Wave of Ice doesn't deal damage, just paralyses, while Rain of Fire is useless. I guess I could use Storm of Wind 😒 but I'd probably be stunlocked to death with the burning animation

How do my fellow mage tackle this and fighting groups in general?

BTW I'm playing a templar so no 5th circle spells for me. But my next game will be a pure mage, so I want to read it all!

How to get Wind Breaker bow in chapter 1?

I've read you can it by using a Transform into Meatbug scroll to enter the Feee Mine, but it doesn't seem to work? Am I supposed to pass through the gaps of the portcullis?

(I have both Union and the Community Patch installed)

My life is a lie

As a kleptomaniac loot goblin I've always picked Sneaking in Gothic 1 because I like to loot everything. On my current run I haven't learned that skill and... it really doesn't matter? I'm like that pikachu meme 😮 All those years sneaking around... For nothing. I could've just walked in like everywhere is my house, pick the lock in front of its owner and brazenly walk away. I guess I have 10 extra SP now, but my world view has crumbled.

Questions about URIZIEL

You only need to kill the immortal orc priest right before the final battle, right? You don't need it to kill the humans and demons at the Sleeper arena.

If I'm from the Swamp Camp and can't use its rune (that requires the 6th circle), I can use the sword even if I'm not trained in 2H, right? Of course, if I have the 30 STR to equip it, which I will. It won't be as effective, but it should get the job done.

Same if I'm a mage with 30 STR but for whatever reason don't want to turn it into a rune, right?

Can someone get me a high resolution image of the Gothic 1 map?

I'm trying to map out where every enemy spawn is on the map (a mad idea I know), but using my old ass monitor that's only 1920x1080 doesn't make for great legibility.

I know there are artistic recreations like this, but I want the in-game map at the highest possible resolution. It'll be easier to correctly place the spawns that way.

Tips for someone who has never used magic in Gothic 1?

Ok, not never, only enough to kill the Ice & Fire Golems and impress one of the baals in the Swamp Camp, but that's it.

Apart from limited scrolls you got runes sold by mages, right? Fire runes from the Fire Mages, Ice runes from the Water Mages and something from the Brotherhood. And dark stuff from Xardas.

I never tried using magic more extensively because you don't regenerate mana and it doesn't feel like you have that many mana potions lying around to sustain heavy use of magic. Additionally, going mage requires a shit ton of SP, so you have to sacrifice other areas.

My doubts are:

- is there a pure mage build? is it worth pursuing?

- what's a good hybrid build?

- which are the better spells? are all camps more or less suitable or is one of them handicapped (Brotherhood)?

- you use magic all the time or save it for hard enemies and groups?

I really want to test my hand at magic, but I'm afraid of screwing up and wasting a lot of hours in a doomed playthrough. Thanks for any advice!

Help with builds

TLDR; what's better 1H or 2H and bow or xbow?

I only beat this game once, years ago. IIRC I used a 1H + Xbow build. I'll probably go the same route again, but I'd like to keep my options open for as long as possible. Here's what I have right now:

STR 46 (+5 ring), DEX 15 (+5 ring), 1H Swords Lvl 2, Sneaking, plus 4 SP to learn how to skin animals
I'm level 30 and have 60 available skill points

Lares' Axe, Orc Hammer, Longbow (can't use), Field Bow, Light Crossbow (can't use)

I've completed most stuff in the Old and New camps, I'm exploring everywhere I can before going to the Swamp Camp. After that I'll decide which camp to join, making a save before so I can follow from that point in other playthroughs.

Going magic heavy is probably not an option at this point, right? From what I've read magic requires heavy investment and minmax.

I'll probably go 1H or 2H with either bows or xbows as support. I know that if I decide to go 2H I could've saved a few SP if I went with New Camp since Lee doesn't require you to master 1H before, but playing so long with no training in 1H didn't feel inviting. Are 1H and 2H more or less equivalent or one is clearly better than the other?

Are bows or xbows better? Ranged combat is awkward enough I don't plan a ranged-focused build ever, it's more a secondary option since I know there enemies immune to melee (apart from a certain weapon). So I don't want to invest heavily in it, but I feel investing nothing will make its usefulness pitiful when I do need it.

Finally, what's a good thematic build for a Swamp Camp playthrough? I know they don't get all the circles of magic, but is hybrid melee/magic build possible for me at this point?

Thanks for any info!

Attacking some enemies is bugged?

I'm having this problem when fighting some enemies (lurkers, bloodhounds, orc dogs, etc) where I'll hit them with my 1H Sword (Whistler's Sword), I'll hear the sound of the hit and the enemy being hurt, but I don't actually do any damage!

This is making fighting those enemies particularly difficult. If I survive long enough I can do some damage, but this extends the fights a lot. Do they actually have a damage resistance of some sort?

I have 26 STR, so I should be dealing 46 damage. I've trained 1H Swords Level 1. I'm playing the Steam version with both Union and the Community Patch. My FPS is capped at 60 because I hear too many FPS makes some stuff go wonky (it was happening before I capped the FPS and has remained unchanged by this)

Gothic 1 awakens something dark inside of me

EDIT: can you assassinate NPCs in their sleep? I believe not, I think I was misremembering killing rogues in their bed at night in the New Camp. It was an open fight, but nobody helps anyone in that camp.

Usually I play the good guy (or rather chaotic good) in most RPGs, but something about Gothic awakens my darkest instincts. I learn Sneaking to loot every chest, but also to kill NPCs in their sleep so I can rob everything in peace. I always kill downed enemies if I can do so with no repercussion. It helps me keep tabs on whom I've robbed or not yet.

Yes, I kill most diggers (including Mud) in the Colony, along with all the Shadows, Guards and such I can get away with. I'll even attack important NPCs and maybe break a questline or 2 just so I can get some powerful weapon.

Do you also play as a serial killer or is your Nameless Hero a more noble sort?

TLDR: what are some things you always do at the start of your game? How to make good use of magic? Can it be combined with melee/ranged or you have to focus on it?

Since the remake is coming next month I've decided to play the original again. I only finished it once years ago. Last year I replayed it and got to around Xardas's tower. In both playthroughs I don't think I even used magic, maybe once or twice to deal with a golem using a scroll.

I remember restarting a lot to get a good start. Things like finding early supplies/gear, npcs to talk to, skills to get, etc. I'd love to hear your tips on that!

Also I hear magic can be very powerful, but I barely used it. I'm not sure which way to go this game: 1h, 2h, ranged or magic.

I'll post my Steam review of it after almost 3h playing. I played with keyboard & mouse and maybe that's part of the problem I had interacting with the environment.

TLDR; the game isn't for me, which doesn't make it a BAD game. In fact I believe it's a good game with a very unique world. It just isn't for me. If you like Tim Burton stop-motion movies, stealth horror and 2D platformers, you'll probably enjoy this game. If you don't like one of those things (mostly the last 2), you might have some issues with it.

I don't like 2D platformers. They feel very limited, very boring to me because they're basically a skill-based math problem. There's only 1 solution to each 'screen', but not only you have to calculate for it, you have do it fast and precise enough, like solving equations with a gun to your head. There are no alternative solutions, let alone creative ones. For me they're basically trial and error until I brute force my way through or give up on the game entirely (looking at you, Limbo).

Little Nightmares is a bit worse for me because it's 2.5D, which means my depth perception goes to shit and directional movement is confusing. I lost count of how many times I jumped to my death because I couldn't see exactly which direction I was going to go or how often I failed to escape because I couldn't climb/crouch through something due to not being able to find the correct angle to do so fast enough.

That meant that very fast the game stopped being a creepy, Tim-Burton-esque stealth platformer and became an exercise in frustration. The mechanics felt opaque and confusing, like in the very first room the game waited like 3 minutes to tell me I had a lighter to illuminate the space and see, right after I manually went to check the controls. It never told me how to grab things, how to throw things. It's not always clear what you can interact with between the obnoxious depth of field and interactions sometimes requiring a precise angle I have trouble finding with the weird 2.5D perspective. The checkpoints are frequent, but still manage to be placed just annoyingly enough. For example, early on you get caught in a cage and must escape. If you fail to leave the room, maybe because you were crushed by a closing door, the checkpoint isn't after you left the cage. It plays the whole script that happens before that. It's like putting the checkpoint BEFORE an unskipable cutscene. It just wastes time.

The game lost me in Chapter 2. I had to deal with a creepy monster [spoiler]I was sure could smell me since, since it did some weird sniffing noises when it got alerted. So I tried to stay away from it and run away. After failing the section more than 10x I watched a video on it and learned I was mistaken. It could HEAR me and I was supposed to walk on cloth and stay still even if it got very close to me. Maybe I could've figured it out if I wasn't already getting pissed with the game, but anger makes you dumb and the game already had me doing that tired sigh that's alway a bad sign. I defaulted to using a video walkthrough at any point I got mildly stuck. Despite the frustration I like the world and was curious to see what happens next. Unfortunately I decided I'd rather watch a let's play of it than actually play the game. I already have a huge backlog, it makes no sense playing a game that just frustrates me.

I don't know if the sequels are fix some of these issues. I only decided to play this game because I had a good time with the Reanimal demo, where I had none of the problems I listed above. Now I'm not sure I want to risk checking Little Nightmares 2 & 3 or even if Reanimal won't turn out the same in the end.

Windrose is one of the best survival games to have come out in the last years. It learned a lot of good lessons from previous titles, is filled with QoL features and combines all this with an under-represented theme. With that said, I feel many people get frustrated because of misplaced expectations, so I'll address those.

The combat is clearly the most debated aspect of the game. I'll say this: Windrose has a great combat system for a survival game. I'll repeat: FOR A SURVIVAL GAME. Don't expect Elden Ring. If I'd compare Windrose's combat to a soulslike, it would be the first Dark Souls. It has a slower, more methodical style that's more about conscious blocking and positioning than than the quick-reflex dashing fest of Elden Ring.

If you've played the Gothic and Risen series, this is an updated version of their combat systems. Your enjoyment of that system will be directly proportional to how much you engage with it. Your gear level matters more than character level and that's part of what's throwing people off. There's a learning curve with difficulty spikes as you explore new regions and it includes learning how to fight new enemies. You can bash your head and try to brute force combat or try to learn its inner working and have a very rewarding progression experience.

Naval combat follows closely that of AC4 Black Flag, but is less deep. You don't have as many options: no ramming, no mortars. In many ways naval combat emphasizes the quirks of the overall combat system: ship gear is even more important since you have less options than on your character for regular combat. There are no instant healing for your ship and you'll often be outnumbered, so being tactical matters more than just getting bigger guns. I'll just warn you that it probably will only feel truly good for most people when you get the biggest ship and upgrade it to the max. THEN you'll be hunter and not the prey at sea.

SO THE COMBAT BOTH ON FOOT AND NAVAL IS PERFECT? NO, FAR FROM IT! Some enemies are too spongy, too quick or need some abilities tuned down. Enemy ship spawns and groupings need balancing. The naval combat need more options. Boarding in special needs a lot of work. But the foundations are good and I like the directionnthe devs chose for the combat system. I hope they refine and balance it rather than dumb it down. And if all this makes you turn your nose: you can modify enemy health/damage freely to get whatever balance feels good for you.

It's a survival game, so some grinding and gathering of resources is to be expected. It's what defines the survival genre: scrounging resources is to survival like shooting is to FPS. And Windrose doesn't ask any outrageous amount of grinding - Valheim is much worse than this. The game offers you the option to plant or buy most resources.

How much of a pirate game Windrose is? Don't expect a modern Sid Meier's pirates. You won't be betraying pirates and colonial governors. You won't even fight the British/Spanish or whatever national navy. This is much more Pirates of the Caribbean: pirates as adventurers facing some supernatural threat. Technically you don't play as a pirate though you're also not exactly a privateer working for a colonial power. You're an independent operator in a personal journey that aligns with the goals of some other factions.

Finally, this is a game that has gone through some fundamental changes. It was originally going to be a PvPvE MMO and has shifted to a singleplayer/coop PvE game. Some of those old bones are still present. It's been 2 weeks since it released in EA, corrections will take time, but I can say I can feel a huge improvement over the pre-EA demo and that was like a month and a half ago, so I'm very optimistic.

IS IT WORTH PLAYING RIGHT NOW? IT ABSOLUTELY IS! You'll get tens of hours out of the current content and the next region has already been announced (no date yet). The devs listen to feedback, they're balancing stuff.

Combining my playtime in both in the current EA version and the pre-EA demo, I've got well over 150+ hours in this game. I'm writing a guide on it, actually. I hope it helps other players have a good experience and appreciate what this is going for. Here's the link to the guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3707132565
