Above Average Performance for Washington Sundar amidst raised doubts on batting abilities

They should utilise his bowling too I feel. Washington Sundar ’s role in the IPL 2026 season is, honestly, a pretty tactical layer for the Gujarat Titans (GT) bowling group. He’s usually known for immaculate control, strong accuracy, and this calm ability to bowl in high pressure moments, and that means Washington can be a sort of momentum-shifter, a defensive style, not the loud kind. For GT captain Shubman Gill, using him well is less about random usage, and more about phase timing and picking those matchups that quietly favor him. Washi’s biggest strength is how he restricts run scoring. Instead of being the traditional “mystery” spinner or a wrist spinner that leans on big turn and exaggerated flight, Washi feels more like a defensive archetype, like a lock that just keeps tightening. Tight lines and lengths: He attacks the stumps again and again, and with his height he can create a steep awkward bounce. It’s hard for batters to get under the ball, and that alone can mess with their rhythm. Under the radar control: His subtle pace changes and angle adjustments don’t feel like a spectacle, more like a clamping action. He pushes dot-ball pressure first, and wickets come because of the pressure, rather than by “trying too hard” to grab them. To get the most impact out of Washington, Shubman Gill can plan a slightly structured three-phase approach, depending on what the match is doing. It’s not just “use him when,” it’s “use him when it bites.” Washi’s peak usefulness in T20 usually shows up with the new ball, so Gill should be confident in giving him overs in the first 6, basically early on. The reason: Using an off spinner in the Powerplay is a tactic that often works, especially versus aggressive openers. Washington tends to target the stumps when there are only two fielders outside the circle. If he keeps a flatter ball trajectory, he can stop batters from freeloading on their front foot. Batsmen are left reaching for answers, and that’s when his control becomes the real threat.
