In the past and across many cultures, women customarily wore dresses and not pants. Why?

I was listening to some trivia on the radio this morning and learned that bloomers became popular during the women’s suffrage movement in the US. Then it got me thinking: it’s no longer stigmatized that women wear pants, but that wasn’t always the case.

Across the globe, the traditional/national garb for women is often dresses or skirts of some kind (ie, NOT pants). In Korea it’s called a hanbok. In India, sari. In Japan, the traditional garb for women is the kimono while in Austria, women wear dirndl. These are just a handful of examples out of many.

How did this come to be? How did it become a cross cultural phenomenon across time that women were relegated to wearing dresses while men wore pants?

Anyone here located near St Louis, MO, USA? Craft Swap July 26, 2026

I'm hosting an art/crafts swap in St Louis, MO (USA) on Sunday, July 26, 2026. If you're nearby and want an invite, let me know!

I was inspired by this sub. I'm hoping to facilitate a fun exchange of arts/crafts -- including through one round of White Elephant exchange (which I hope adds a fun twist to the whole thing) in my local community

Do you guys have anything like this going on in your cities?

STL Arts/Crafts Swap - FINAL UPDATE

Please see my previous post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/StLouis/s/ZNeD6q3Rpk

This event will be held at Perennial on July 26, and will be limited to 20 participants. To offset some of the costs of hosting/organizing this event, I kindly ask that guests chip in $10 to participate in this swap. There will be light snacks and refreshments. Bring your own favorite snack/beverage (adult or otherwise) if you please!

I will be disseminating invites through Partiful. To receive an invite and reserve your spot, please DM me your name and email address

I ask that participants bring 2-3 (or more if you please) handmade items to swap. One item should be wrapped or packaged in some way (inside an old paper bag from Trader Joe’s is perfectly acceptable) so we can do a White Elephant exchange. You’re welcome to bring more than this one item if you’d like to swap with others directly after the White Elephant exchange

I will share further updates as they arise (on this post), so please stay tuned

Looking forward to meeting some of you creative folks soon!

Local Arts/Crafts Exchange - UPDATE

A couple days ago I kind of informally surveyed the general STL population to gauge interest in a local arts/crafts swap/exchange (original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/StLouis/s/UbKrLUZJ7a)

There seemed to be a decent amount of interest, so I reached out to a couple places to inquire about renting their space for this event

I’m leaning towards having this event at Perennial. I think Perennial will be the perfect creative space for something like this (iykyk). I’ve been in touch with the cool folks over there and at this time I’m leaning towards having the swap in late July on a Sunday afternoon (pending availability)

Right now I’m leaning towards capping the number of participants to 20 (the rental fee increases as group size increases), but that number could change depending on interest

Lastly, I wish I didn’t have to ask but I am not in a financial position to eat the entire cost of hosting and organizing this event. I kindly ask that participants chip in a few bucks to take part in this swap

Any tips or advice appreciated. This is my first time doing something like this!

Hand-made reversible cotton totes for TRADE

They’re lined with 100% cotton denim and can be worn inside out. The seams are hidden and the bags are reversible

The three bags shown here are ones I made to gift. I’d be making similar but not identical ones. You can be as involved or uninvolved in the decision-making process as you want

I’m looking to trade for other handmade things: ceramics, original art / prints, hand-knit or crocheted items, etc

Misc handmade items (by me) for swap/exchange

The socks are women’s size 7ish. I hand-knit these with wool so they’re super cozy

I also linoprint, so I have original prints up for trade

EDIT - the socks have never been worn besides the one time I slipped them on to take this picture

St Louis Art/Crafts Swap/Exchange

I was talking to a friend from a different city and she mentioned she had attended a local craft swap/exchange in her town. Apparently there’s a group on Facebook and someone organizes these arts/crafts swap events for her locale

There don’t seem to be any similar groups for St. Louis, so I wanted to put out some feelers to see if people might be interested in something like this

The only real ‘rule’ is that it’s handmade, and you’re open to trading your work for someone else’s art/craft/item. We’d meet at some place (maybe a coffee shop or brewery?) in a few weeks to meet, swap, and maybe make new friends

Some of the things I’ve handmade and would be up to swap/exchange include original linoprints, handknit socks (100% wool!), handmade reversible cotton tote bags, etc

Would anyone be interested in something like this?

Idk if it matters but I’m 42F

Linoprint from girls night

A couple weeks ago for my birthday (42 🎉) I had a few girl friends over for a ✨wine and printmaking night✨

I provided crudités, charcuterie, and refreshments - as well as printmaking supplies

Each participant was asked to draw/carve a building of their choice into their linoleum/rubber blocks. Then at the end of the night we printed everyone’s blocks together - creating this print of a make-believe neighborhood

Hand knit socks!

I knit these up in tandem using two hanks of Urth Yarns UNEEK self-striping yarns. The two hanks of yarn were the same colorway, so it’s interesting to see how differently they came out

I frogged my sock, then restarted it - but the color-pooling I loved disappeared

I originally knit up a sock using this really beautiful, pooling variegated yarn. At some point I decided to frog the sock.

I like this yarn though so I decide to have another go at the sock, this time without a contrast toe. I can’t remember if I did the same number of stitches per needle (32) because I stupidly deleted the note with all that information and it’s been over 30 days so I can’t recover it 😭. Another change is that I sized up from 2.25 mm to 2.5 mm needles

Anyway, look at the end result on my second sock. I lost that beautiful, wavy, striped gradient thing that happened the first time

I’m wondering if this is an okay-looking sock as is, or if I should frog again and attempt to recreate the first look

Recommendations for foundation/wall crack repair companies?

Moved in to new home last year. We have a couple cracks in the basement walls we want to get this addressed sooner than later.

Top thing that comes up when I google is Foundation Recovery Systems (FRS) which seems to have good reviews (4.8/5 stars)

Anyone have any experience with them? Or other foundation repair companies in the area?

Any places to steer clear of?

Paton’s Kroy sock yarn in the color Landscape Stripes

I bought a bunch of Kroy sock yarn not too long ago, so I’m knitting them up for friends and family, and documenting the process

u/dr_mus_musculus — 1 month ago

My second ever pair!

Knit up on 2.25 mm long circulars with one of Urth Yarn’s UNEEK self-striping yarns (can’t remember the color). The two socks were knit up in tandem using two hanks of the same colorway, so it’s interesting to see how different they turned out

I used Turkish cast-on for the toes and German short rows for the heels

Paton’s Kroy sock yarn in the colorway Route 44

*Route 66

Knitting these up to give to my MIL this Christmas.

I’m surprised by how much I’m liking Paton’s Kroy sock yarn. It’s affordable and knits up a really cozy sock

Some some yarn recently and made a new sock-knitting friend!

*Sold some yarn recently, typo in title

Recently I sold some yarn on FB marketplace. The woman who came to pick up the yarn was a kindly older lady (70 something. I’m 40F) who struck up a conversation with me about what I had originally planned for the yarn I was selling, what kinds of things I like to knit, etc. I mentioned I have been into sock-knitting recently and this set off a 20 minute conversation about all things knitty. She's apparently in the local knitting guild (whatever that is?). She asked to see my newly finished (first pair!) socks, and so I brought them out for her to see and she ooh’d and ahh’d at them, trying to guess the yarn I used.

After everything was said and done, we exchanged Ravelry information (I am not very active on there, but apparently she is!) and phone numbers. She invited me to get in touch with her if I need any help with any of my projects (socks or otherwise), and that we can meet at one of our many local libraries.

I don’t know where I’m going with this, other than to say that I am thrilled to have met a fellow yarn/knitting enthusiast and made a new friend. I go to my LYS to take lessons and classes – and I meet a lot of people there. But this feels special and different, and kind of serendipitous.

Pam, if you’re on here – Hi!

Just wanted to share my little story.
