Did I read this? Or did I come up with this?
Hello everyone! I had the exquisite luck of living in Columbus Ohio from 1989 to 1996.
A great chunk of the GBV classic era.
Saw them many times, pre and post notoriety.
Highlights:
Was going thru the crates at Used Kids Annex & overheard a conversation between Mike Rep & Bob (I recall him talking about meeting Pavement).
GBV & Matador labelmates Come at Sudsy Malone’s in Cinci.
(Was either late 95 or early 96… it doesn’t seem to be on the live database)
Was watching Come & happened to turn & see Bob and Kim Deal standing directly behind me.
When the Flaming Lips played Stache’s in ‘95, they opened with “Motor Away”, because Bob was in attendance.
He got up on stage to sing with them, but he was so wasted that he didn’t seem to remember the words (oh well… it’s the thought that counts).
Brings me to my question:
I have described GBV as having a one-man McCartney/Lennon (Bob) and a Harrison (Tobe).
One writes the GREAT majority of the material, but the other gets a few in there as well (and they’re always unique to their style).
Did I read this somewhere? Or did I come up with this?
