Port Adelaide to exit SANFL at the end of 2028

https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/port-adelaide-ceo-matthew-richardson-on-zak-butters-and-exiting-the-sanfl/news-story/a064654b7934e121626e95b75d37ac88?amp

Richardson (Port CEO) told SEN the Power’s side would also exit the SANFL at the end of 2028 as the club attempted to find a league which would fast-track their kids.

The Power would need to travel more if they were to enter the VFL but he said the SANFL competition was not strong enough to develop Port Adelaide’s emerging kids.

He said the Power had been disappointed by their injury list and close losses but thrilled by Josh Carr’s first season in charge.

Now as the club brings in academy selection Dougie Cochrane they need to go back to the draft strongly after not taking a national draft pick last season.

“If you look at the last six years, we are 18th for draft selections so got to go to the draft, we started the plan at the end of 2024 with (Joe) Berry and (Jack) Whitlock. Clearly the next couple of drafts are important so we have to get more talent in but we have a core 22-25 year olds in Rozee, (Miles) Bergman, (Jason) Horne-Francis, (Mitch) Georgiades, (Jase) Burgoyne. As they mature with the next wave. A rebuild is about bottoming out and staying there for 7-8 years. That’s not what we are trying to do but there is no doubt we have to get more talent on our list and that’s the phase we are in at the moment.”

Zak Butters “farewell game”

No benefit to the long term interests of the Port Adelaide football club.

Love Zak but at the end of the day, he’s (likely) leaving the club at its lowest point in 15 years.

You don’t roll out the red carpet for that.

[Jay Clark] Butters has made it clear the draft option is a no-go zone as he is adamant Port Adelaide must be appropriately compensated if, as expected, he departs at season’s end

Any chance Richmond would not trade for Butters and instead ask him to enter the PSD?

I am officially worried

Shoutout to Freo

Credit to Freo, they have put together a mighty impressive side without Academy handouts. Really astute drafting and trading.

They're super fit and very strong too. They're everyone’s benchmark.

If they win it this year, it may be the most ethical premier in the AFL ever

[Jay Clark] The reality is Richmond face a critical two months to ensure they remain competitive across the rest of the season in the face of scuttlebutt about former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley. The link is if Hinkley lands at Punt Rd, Zak Butters could, too.

Does the 3.29 league name get announced (and teasers) this week?

There is usually a trend of the league name getting announced 4 weeks out, however due to POE2’s development, the trend has shifted last league.

Anyhow we are now close to that mark with the league announced for the 24th. Historically the league name gets announced ~20 days prior to the launch so that would make it this week if it follows.
