According to ChatGPT, Oracle has ( roughly) 40-50 orgs. Where do you think Oracle health lands in terms of importance?

It’s been a weird time for all of us since getting acquired. AI really started to pick up traction as soon as the ink was dry on our deal. I often times get the sense that Oracle doesn’t have much use for old cerner folks (which I whole heartedly disagree with, cerner OG’s are almost always cool).

So to me that begs the question, let’s just set the marker at 40 (give or take but we’ll call it 40). 40 lines of business/orgs. 1 being the most important org, 40 being the least, where do you honestly think Oracle health lands? Personally, I’m not so certain we even crack the top 20, but there’s also a ton of stuff Oracle does that I have no clue about.

3 weeks in the shop to fix the roof dent. You’ll never believe what happened during the very first car wash…

As the truck was closing in on the blower for the end of the car wash it’s like time stood still. Nothing but shitty tradespeople in my area and have been on a bad run of repairs not getting properly fixed.

Closer

Closer

THUMP.

Complete waste of fucking time. It’s not worth it, trust me.

Lack of Skilled tradespeople in this area

Bit of a rant here, but it’s absolutely mind boggling to me and I can’t seem to make it make sense, so I figured I’d turn to my fellow neighbors for their opinions/guidance.

Im pretty handy and like prefer to DIY a project if at all possible. In the last month and a half, I have had 4 items either break while under warranty, or needed to be installed by a licensed “professional” (for lack of a better term). The following are my results:

Vehicle: small warranty repair. Dealership for a week, get it back, wasnt fixed completely, back to the dealership for 2 more weeks.

Water Heater: 2 appointments. Didn’t finish it the first day, wired incorrectly the second day.

About a week later a small fire atop my water heater put me onto the wiring problem. I had a federal pacific electrical panel which needed to be replaced anyways as it’s such a liability, and in order to fix the water heater correctly that had to go, so new panel + water heater shut off

Electrical Panel: they’ve been here 4 times and its still not done. Failed inspection last week, i did the remaining $1000 work myself to be credited back that amount. Not including the drywall they attempted to repair around the panel all had to be ripped out and redone (by me) because they left it in awful shape, then come to find out they put another dent on the opposite side of the wall that i also had to fix, and they knocked an electrical box out of place and left it just hanging by the mc cable, which i will now also need to fix. They still haven’t finished the job and the panel has not passed inspection.

HVAC: did a reasonable job but also failed inspection due to an improperly sized drain, they need to come back out and fix that so it will pass

TV: brand new, randomly broke, technician was here for a third time today and just discovered he too will have to come back because he did not install the back panel correctly.

TLDR: I can’t believe anyone pays people around here to regularly fix their homes. It’s a minimum 3 appointments for ANYTHING by a “Licensed professional.” They do it every single day and have yet to do it correctly the first time in my home. I have to take so much time away from my own job so they can come out here and do a terrible job at theirs. Its maddening.

An ode to the OG’s

Was going through my phone the other day to recordings of some of the best callers. I don’t know where you are, or if you even still listen to the show. But I hope life is treating you well now,

John Amos (GOAT imo)
President Donald J Trump
Drunk Greg Hill
Bernie Kosar
Sebastian
Indiana Jones
Clit Guy (bit more niche, but I always laughed)
Tim in Canton (of course)
Gerrys uncle (kirk hates him but i always thought he was a good caller)
And an honorable mention for billboard charts guy. Still around but i like his calls.

I can still remember exactly where i was when many of the former callers made their mark on the show. You guys were the best.

An attempt was made………I think?

Took my 2023 LT in to go the roof dent fixed. Took 3 weeks and unless it somehow strengthens the roof against long term deterioration it’s 100% not worth it imo. Anyways finally get my baby back from the dealership and it appears they took the liberty of detailing it for me. A gesture that I do appreciate, in theory, but it just looks………off? I don’t know if the photos will do it justice, I guess you might just have to take my word for it that it’s bad in person, but the interior of my truck looks and feels like Gordon Geckos hair. Just very greasy, areas that shouldn’t be shiny are shiny, and area that are normally glossy like the center console are very hazy.

It the cleaner supposed to sit for longer? Did they not buff it correctly? This whole thing has been a huge pain in the ass and it if I now have to clean up their clean up job I’d prefer they’d just have left it alone.

Experience with UCI Cable Internet modem + Xfinity

Hi all, I live in an Xfinity monopoly zone and unfortunately am forced to purchase their service. They’re in my top 2 most hated companies on the planet, and they aren’t second.

I have the gigabit x2 plan, which is the fastest offered in my area. Over the last year, I’ve read conflicting reports on using a 3rd party modem instead of the “free” gateway Xfinity provides.

As I understand it, (and am hoping to be wrong), you can get a third party modem like the one above, but by doing so, you forfeit the unlimited data included with your plan (and are subject to $30/mo extra fee if you want it), and may not get the full 2gb that you pay for, because apparently Xfinity makes the only device in all of mankind that is a capable of accomplishing such a feat.

Anyone have any experience with this situation? My goal is to remove as much Xfinity hardware from my house as humanly possible, and all that’s left is their gateway that I’m forced to use as a modem in bridge mode. Thanks in advance

Flood Gen 4 and Zigbee

Hey all, I’m a huge Shelly guy and have always been very satisfied with the quality of product they put out. As soon as I finished outfitting my house in PM gen 3’s, they dropped the gen 4’s with zigbee which I knew would only be a matter of time before I started slowly moving everything in that direction as that’s my protocol of choice. I’m probably 50/50 zigbee/wifi EM’s and relays now and they’ve been stable as always, and I like that I’m adding more mains powered zigbee devices around to ramp up my mesh strength, which was already pretty good.

Anyways, I’ve had a hell of a time with leak detectors. I have some that don’t interface with Home assistant and actually are great, but I decided i wanted to get some that do interface for redundancy/visibility after a bad leak caused a ton of damage to my home awhile back. I first tried Aqara and they were awful (and I think actually messed up my entire network but I digress), then moved on to third reality which were not much better, and then finally on to Shelly.

Due to the whole aforementioned Aqara issue I had other zigbee issues, so I decided to upgrade my controller from the sonoff dongle to a POE stick. Since migration, I find it harder to get (non-mains) devices to connect, but when they do they’ve stayed pretty solid.

…..except for the Shelly flood gen 4. Admittedly, I had it in what is probably the biggest dead zone in my house (in a closet behind the washer, dryer, and water heater), but with like 8 other mains powered devices within 10 feet of it. Still nothing, couldn’t get it to hold on for the life of me. So now I just moved it out into the open to see how it goes but even there it is still falling off. Is the zigbee just not very good in these? I actually really like the device itself but it’s no good to me if it can’t hold on in bad areas, which unfortunately, are where leak detectors go. There’s not really an optimal place for something that’s usually around/underneath large appliances. Just was curious if anyone else had a similar situation or recommendation.

Do these vans exist exclusively to go under the speed limit in the left lane?

I swear every time I hit the road there’s always one of these clogging up the left hand lane, blissfully unaware of it’s surroundings

I feel that we’ve been reverse unionized

Not a political person, this is not a political post, I am admittedly and for all intents and purposes, a dumbass with no dog in the fight one side or the other.

I don’t know very much about unions, but once I start overthinking the purgatory that is my career it made me think “I can see how unions get formed, I wish we had somebody to advocate for us (worker bees) and to collectively bargain on our behalf.”

So I asked ChatGPT to give me a down the middle explanation of the pros/cons of unions - pros being better benefits, better pay, continuity of work, alignment to health and professional resources, training, and safety improvements, etc.

The cons were that they can turn into a “good ol boys club” and favor the older generation who’s been around longer and is within the inner circle. The other, more poignant argument mentioned that unionization can deteriorate worker ambition, by granting protection to employees, high performers have less incentive to continue performing highly because the union can act as a governor in a way, while the low performers benefit from the union because their job is protected even if they perform poorly. Doesn’t matter, everyone is still on the same boat.

I want to be clear, I do not consider myself anything more than an average employee, but I’ve seen some terrific ones get laid off, and I’ve seen some bad ones get laid off. What I haven’t seen is my paycheck increase in size (or even return back to what it was when cerner was cutting the checks).

We don’t have a union, I don’t think I’m really advocating for one, I’d at least hear them out if someone tried to form one. But we suffer all the disadvantages union workers put up with, (There is 0 incentive to work harder at this company) and also receive none of the benefits.

This constant loop puts my brain in a spin cycle and I just can’t make it make sense. I just want someone, anyone, from upper management to look me dead in the eyes and answer the very simple question of “what is my incentive to work harder?” Because there is simply no way they could tell me “raises and promotions” and also pass a lie detector test.

Accidentally cut my neighbors cable internet drop

Have been renovating my home office (live in a condo) and had to demo a wall. The sawzall went brrrrrrrrrrrrr and when I removed the sheet rock found I cut a coax cable that looks like it runs down to my neighbors place. He rents it out, and it’s currently unoccupied. We hate each others guts, mainly because he constantly is attempting to shake me down for money and I verbally undressed him in front of our HOA a few months back.

Anyways, if he finds out he’s going to try to parlay this into me causing other damage because he doesn’t insure his rental unit and thinks my insurance also covers his unit. You think it’ll be alright if I just reterminate the ends and add a coupling? Then put up new drywall and pretend like I know nothing? I’ve terminated a few ends in my day so I’m comfortable doing it, just didn’t know if the coax was charged or had any current running through it

Annual Review - a take

I have some takes I really want to get off my chest, and since I work remotely and can’t really talk about this stuff with my actual coworkers I come here, to Peter Pan land to distribute my takes for the review of the last fiscal year.

I do not feel that I filled out a performance review, I feel like I organized an easy to digest summary for someone to review the next time layoffs come around. I filled out this review knowing full well I’m likely not getting a raise, if I do it will be insultingly low, so little that it won’t even make a difference. I know I am not getting promoted, and likely not for a couple of years minimum. That’s fine, I don’t feel I’m entitled to a promotion, and know I work with many much more deserving people that have a deservedly better spot in line. That’s life, and I want my (cool) coworkers to thrive.

What I filled out this year was not a review. It has no impact on me financially, and doubtfully organizationally either. I filled out a brief summary of why they should keep me around when the next wave of massive layoffs hit. That’s the only tangible benefit I can see in it. All I did was just go to bat as hard as I possibly could for my own self, so that on some random day on some random month, I do not wake up to a cowardly, gutless email telling me my services are no longer necessary. It sounds nihilistic but what’s the point to this? What is our incentive to work harder? It’s not to progress at this point, it’s simply just to stay alive.

I don’t know what the decision making level people are thinking, and I certainly don’t think I’d ever make it as far to be one of those people, but what is it? Do they just think it’s a privilege to work for Oracle? That their employees will just grip it tighter and push it harder year after year, for …….what?

I actually like my job and the people I work with, which has never really happened to me before. But at my other jobs that I hated I could at least see the path. That ____ went from entry level consultant, to a lead consultant, to managing a team, to managing projects, to managing managers, then to the c-suite. Or that my coworkers remember when the division head was just a lowly middle manager yada yada. I couldn’t even tell you what I’d consider to be the next vertical leap for me, and at this rate, how long it would take to even get to that point.

Just sucks. I like it here but I have to do Olympic level mental gymnastics to convince myself that I could be crushing it here or achieving my goals someday. When you sign your paperwork to become an employee it should just say “we’ll cut you a check every 2 weeks and provide some pretty good benefits but that’s really all you can count on”
