Weekend Rental—Metal Gear

Welcome to Video Connection, your local rental store. This week, you decided to rent Metal Gear. A recent issue of Our Game Club Magazine gave it 3 out of 5 stars. The reviewer notes that Metal Gear on the NES is a middling port of the far superior MSX2 original (available in PAL regions). MSX Club Magazine cites Konami's mysterious "H. Kojima," and our staff agrees he has tapped into something new: a brilliant mix of action and espionage that works well even on the NES.

• Do you have the game in your collection? Turn the weekend into a marathon gaming session.

• Weekend Rentals are considered on topic, so post your progress. Rentals are due back after one week, so get on it!

• Rentals were ephemeral, and so are the user flairs associated with them. Want to rep your rental? Grab the user flair before the game is due back at Video Connection.

• Some games, like lengthy RPGs, will take longer to beat than the seven-day rental period. That's okay. Weekend Rentals are on for one week as a community feature, it's not a time limit.

Weekend Rental—Mega Man X

Welcome to Video Connection, your local rental store. This week, you decided to rent Mega Man X. A recent issue of Our Game Club Magazine gave it 4 out of 5 stars. The reviewer notes that Mega Man shines in his 16-bit debut. Vibrant colors pop and new abilities like wall jumping and mech riding are in full effect. Also, rumors abound at the head office about a secret hadouken upgrade. Pretty neat, huh?

It's my first time truly diving in to NieR: Automata and... I really can't shake this feeling.

For the record, I'm loving it so far.

Weekend Rental—Super Mario Kart

Welcome to Video Connection, your local rental store. This week, you decided to rent Super Mario Kart. A recent issue of Our Game Club Magazine gave it 4 out of 5 stars. The reviewer notes that SMK's Mode 7 visuals are particularly impressive here, and the track variety makes each cup satisfying all the way through. Mario's strong aesthetic is in full swing here, tangible proof that the Mushroom Kingdom can play host to untold varieties of eventual spin-offs; Super Mario Luge? Super Mario Sepaktakraw? Super Mario Baccarat?

Release dates announced for the never-before-playable D-Hopper and Zero Racers (Aug. 4), and… Super Mario Sunshine (Aug. 13)!

Always some exciting activity surrounding these collections! Nintendo is finally looking to quench the summer thirst of all those who missed out on the Super Mario 3D All-Stars limited-time release, by making Super Mario Sunshine more widely available.

We also have two long-fabled games that never saw the light of day, on their original platform… the Virtual Boy, an unfortunately doomed product that Nintendo ended support for, only five months after its 1995 release in Japan. These are D-Hopper (formerly known as Dragon Hopper) and Zero Racers—a game set within the F-Zero universe.

This update for the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection will also add screen color customization—allowing you to change its infamous (and eye-searing) blood-red hue to various other colors. Originally shown off as being green, yellow, and gray—new screenshots seem to suggest there may be more options available that make the game screen less black, as well, and more Game Boy-like.

This may be the final Virtual Boy update, as it makes good on all the games promised in the initial reveal, and leaves us at 17 total titles. To recap...

Due on August 4th:

  • Zero Racers • (Nintendo)
  • D-Hopper • (Intelligent Systems)

Due on August 13th (exclusively on Switch 2):

  • Super Mario Sunshine • (Nintendo EAD)

I've attached the new mini-trailers in the comments section!

Now, we wait.

It takes as long as it takes, but is 4+ weeks normal on pending for Discovery?

4 weeks, 4 years, I don't mind the wait, I know they're busy. Extremely busy. My concern is that I submitted my ticket for discovery about 5 minutes before that huge downtime about a month ago, and I'm wondering if maybe the ticket got lost or deleted somehow. I'm as patient as they come so this isn't about lighting a fire under someone's feet, just wondering if this should be my expectation.

I don't necessarily want to resubmit because that starts the potential 4-week process over again, right?

Let's plan an Eagleland road trip together. Help me develop an itinerary by leaving a number (8-233) in the comments. The first 10 get a picture of the corresponding handbook page.

I don't want to just put the whole book online, that wouldn't be fair to the authors, so I'm only dropping in the first 10 page-number comments. It's fun to pretend this is our actual road trip itinerary, so let's get the maps out and see where we might visit in our Runaway Five van!

Edit: Thank you to all who participated. We didn't make it to ten pages, that's fine, but I'm going to close the book on this post; pun intended. I have a busy week coming up and I want to clear my plate. Hope you enjoyed the book! Please seek it out and snag yourself a copy if you're able. It's a wonderful addition to any shelf.
