My husband and I are going to retire at 60 within the next year. We're thinking of selling our house in a very LGBTQ+ visible community in Montgomery County and moving to Baltimore County. It's quieter and less congested, and we're fans of Baltimore as a city, but we're suburbanites more than city dwellers, so we'd live outside city limits. We love the mid-century housing in Lutherville and could see ourselves buying a house there, spending retirement fixing it up, landscaping, and turning it into our age-in-place home. How is life there for a gay male couple? We're discreet by nature, not by closet, if that makes sense. We have lots of gay friends but lots of straight friends, too. Is there a gay suburban presence? Would we forever be the weird gay guys down the street? Or would no one care?
Basics: 60 yr old married man, healthy, no kids, no debt, HCOL area, house owned outright. We have about $3.4 million, mostly invested in tax deferred retirement accounts. I want to retire soon. I'm trying to figure out the best way to structure income. What do people think about buying an annuity with one chunk of money (say a million) and keeping the rest invested for growth over the long term? Are annuities a potential problem? I like the guaranteed set and forget aspect, and I already have a lot of money in TIAA which is annuity-focused, but I don't want to be boxed in or feel like my money isn't working for me.
Many of you have more razors than you need and a lifetime of different brands of blades, but when you just want a quick, predictable, and efficient shave, to get out the door in a hurry, what combo do you reach for? For me, it's a Parker slant and Gillette Minora.
I have a new-to-me 2025 Volvo V60. I'll be using it to transport two bikes regularly this summer and fall. The question is, how? I don't want to scratch the finish with the rear-mounted bike rack I use with an older car. I could get a roof rack bike carrier but it seems difficult getting the bikes up there. Volvo has a trailer hitch system that conceals the works under the bumper which seems involved and expensive to install - but it would be great for a hitch-mounted bike carrier. Any recommendations or suggestions? Has anyone added that hidden trailer hitch? How do you transport bikes?
I'll start — and this happened today for the 100th time: I'll set out on errands, like going to the grocery store, with a carefully considered fountain pen in my pocket (Waterman Carène this morning) only to leave my wallet home. Fortunately, I had my phone, so I could buy my stuff with Google Pay, but I'll often forget that, too... but never the pen!
The guy at the dealer implied it wouldn't be the end of the world to use regular gas. I'm inclined to shell out the extra bucks for premium, but does it truly matter? Are driving conditions a factor? I also have a 2012 C30 6-speed that calls for regular. Would it make a difference if I used premium in it?
