Reusing a Bambu Lab extruder motor outside a printer — standard bipolar stepper or proprietary?
Hi,
I’m trying to reuse a Bambu Lab extruder motor outside of a 3D printer project, and I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with these motors specifically.
The motor is described by Bambu as a “36-series circular stepping motor” used for the extruder assembly.
I’d like to know:
- does it behave like a standard bipolar stepper in practice?
- can it be driven normally with TMC2209/TMC2208 drivers?
- are there any unusual electrical or control limitations?
- is there anything proprietary besides the connector?
- has anyone identified the pinout/current specs successfully?
I’m mainly interested in understanding whether these motors are realistically reusable for custom robotics/CNC-style projects, or if they rely too heavily on Bambu-specific hardware.
Thanks!
Minimalis Finger Skate
I did this, I'm only 17 years old and I'm new to 3D printing, I hope you enjoy this model! Don't hesitate to boost it if you like it! It's thanks to the boosts that I can buy filament and keep printing!

Hey everyone,
I’m excited to share my latest finger skate design! 🛹
This model features a clean ergonomic shape, a textured deck for better grip, and a minimalist style.
I’ve also included alternate design variations if you want to switch things up.
