face your demons [fanmade bump]

thank you so much to everyone who checked out my previous fanmade bump! i didn't expect that many people to rock with the vision and it made me a bit emotional earlier, so i'm deciding to post the first bump i made here!

this one's more in the style of the lower-budget bumps with a simple loop from Devil Hunter Yohko, a 90s OVA that, imo, could've absolutely made it's way onto AS if it started airing maybe 5 years earlier. it's not a super popular OVA by any means, but was one of the first western anime releases to become commonplace as video rental stores such as Blockbuster back in the day when anime was incredibly niche and rare in the west. it's a fun watch, especially if you're a fan of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it's only 6 episodes, so you have no reason NOT to watch it.

song is Circles by Adam F!

long day? [fanmade bump]

recently i've been collecting Adult Swim bumps for my cartoon & anime collection, but realized i have a large gap in how many shows have bumps and how many don't, so i've started taking a crack at making my own short & simple ones! here's a late-night bump for You're Under Arrest! featuring "sea of cloud" by Nujabes.

if you like what you see, i'll be posting any additional bumps i work for my collection onto my videography channel!

Without Warning (1994)

I've been looking for interesting horror movies to watch over the last several weeks for writing inspiration, and I ended up throwing on the 1994 movie "Without Warning" after hearing high praise about it's unique form of storytelling, and holy shit were my expectations ever blown out of the water. Without Warning is a "modernized" reimagining of Orson Welles' classic "War of the Worlds" radio drama (it's not a true remake of the original story, but a new story that takes heavy inspiration from it, even going as far as to name certain locations after ones mentioned the original radio drama), and it's incredible how well the concept of live reporting an extraterrestrial event makes an effortless transition to the TV news broadcast format.

There are 3 versions of this movie available on YouTube, there's the original broadcast version (which is what I'd recommend most people watch their first time around, specifically on a CRT television if you have access to one), which includes the original ad breaks between segments which really grounds the broadcast in reality and make it feel closer to an actual news broadcast of the era than just a movie about a newscast, although this effect was apparently so convincing that they had to constantly remind the viewer after every ad break that what they were watching was a work of fiction to not cause another mass panic event like the original broadcast (and yet people still panicked and called CBS to ask if it was real, and called affiliate news stations to ask why they weren't reporting on it), but there's an alternate fan-made cut called the "Unfiction Edit" that keeps in the commercials and removes the warnings, making it potentially the most immersive version of the bunch. Unfortunately, this version is uploaded in 16:9 with letterboxing instead of the original 4:3, so I can only recommend that version if you're watching it on an HDTV, which takes away some of the immersion. Lastly, there's the DVD version, which is JUST the news segments and nothing else. I wouldn't really recommend that version, as it completely loses the immersion that makes the formula actually work.

There are also some other little neat easter eggs that would've given away the fact that this broadcast was a performance, such as the use of well-known actors like John de Lancie (Q from Star Trek) and Jane Kaczmarek (of Malcolm in the Middle fame) being cast as two of the reporters, and a callback to Grover's Mill from WOTW, so it really shows that this was a passion project from someone who absolutely LOVED War of the Worlds and was acutely aware of it's legacy and wanted to get as close to it as possible while being more "responsible" about it.

I know I haven't talked much about the story here, but it's hard to talk about specifics without delving into spoiler territory, and trust me, it's a story you want to watch unfold for yourself. The ending still lives in my mind as one of the best endings a horror movie's ever had, it left me feeling incredibly uneasy and unnerved even decades after it's original broadcast.

It ain't much, but it's somethin'!

My friend bought me these tapes while they were in Japan, so I finally have a small anime VHS collection of my own! I've been on the lookout for the last few years every time I pop into my local thrift shops, but the only anime tapes I've ever found were French dubs of stuff like Dragon Ball Z when I was in Montreal, but I'm worse at French than I am at Japanese, so I passed up on them.

They're in fantastic condition, I watched the one on the right (The Weathering Continent) the other night, my Japanese is incredibly limited so I didn't pick up very much of the plot, but I loved the art style (even if it's a bit on the rougher side at times) and overall dreamlike feel of the world! Tonight or tomorrow night I'm going to tackle Bousou Sengokushi, I've heard it's not great, but I'm sure that's nothing that can't be solved with a joint or two.

AetherSX2 & Pi 5 - What games work best for you?

Hey y'all! I've been tinkering around with AetherSX2 on Raspberry Pi OS, and wanted to compile a tiny list of games I've tried that, with around 2-3h of gameplay each, all seem to run flawlessly on a 1GB Pi 5 at stock clocks, with most of AetherSX2's settings dropped down to minimum with the Vulkan renderer at the PS2's native resolution running through the Pi 5's composite output into a CRT running at 480i.

 • .hack//Infection - Solid 100% speed, no notable issues to speak of.
 • Kingdom Hearts - A bit of FMV desync (this may be caused by me running the game from my NAS), but the actual game runs basically perfectly in my experience (made it all the way to the Jungle world). There MIGHT be some graphical issues with the Gummi Ship sections, but I haven't played this game since I was a kid, so I don't know 100%.
 • Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 & 4 - Both seem to run perfectly with no notable issues. Blur seems to be overly aggressive in Persona 4, so I'd recommend disabling it there, but other than that, they both look and run great.
 • Final Fantasy X - Initially had one crash, but I've put in several hours since with no further crashes, and it looks and runs great.
 • Half-Life - Almost perfect, some sounds MIGHT be too loud? But gameplay wise, everything's great, I saw one brief slowdown in a vent with the flashlight on for a split second, but it was like 100% to 95%, nothing dramatic. No idea how well Decay runs.
 • Oni - Runs great, looks a bit dark though, and some sounds may be a bit louder than normal.
 • Lumines Plus - Perfect, literally nothing to report, I can get lost in this one for hours.
 • Jade Cocoon 2 - Only played about 30-45 minutes of this one, but it ran flawlessly in that time.
 • Resident Evil Outbreak - Only made it as far as getting out of Jay's Bar in the first scenario, but it ran perfectly during that time.
 • Resident Evil - Code Veronica X - I'm awful at this game so I only made it as far as meeting Steve, but it ran perfect during that time.
 • Katamari Damacy - Also had one initial crash with this one, but haven't had any issues since in the first two stages.
 • Odin Sphere - Perfect, no notes.
 • The Operative: No One Lives Forever - A bit of audio stutter (along with the fact that the game's voices sound like they were recorded from the first ever telephone call with Alexander Graham Bell), but no real notable performance issues EXCEPT for when NPCs open windows for whatever reason.
 • Devil May Cry - Only played this one for 20 minutes, but it ran amazingly in that time.

You can see there's a bit of a theme of JRPGs running the best in my testing here.

And here's a list of games that DON'T work in my experience.

 • Ghost in the Shell - Runs decently with a few minor slowdowns until literally any 2D asset that wasn't there previously appears on screen, then the game becomes a slideshow and usually crashes.
 • Magical Pengel: The Quest for Color - Gets to the end of the intro cinematic and crashes.
 • Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht - A complete slideshow once any 3D assets are on screen.
 • Kya: Dark Lineage - Has a giant weird purple fog enveloping part of the environment, and runs at half-speed.
 • Unreal Tournament - Just crashes when a match launches.
 • SSX - Runs at half-speed.
 • Sly Cooper & The Thievius Raccoonus - Basically a slideshow.
 • Rumble Roses - Character models don't render at all.
 • Bully - Also a slideshow.
 • Arcana Heart - Game runs at half speed and parts of character sprites disappear every time a character changes animations.

What games have y'all tested out that work well? And what ones would you suggest people avoid?

"We have the PS2 Classic at home."

hey y'all, long-time lurker and irregular poster.

for a while i've been iterating on my own RetroPie "console" experience designed specifically around CRTs, starting all the way back with the original Pi 3 and now up to a Pi 5, and the one thing that's irked me is that i haven't found a PS2-style theme I've liked for EmulationStation, so i've spent the last several days working on a proof of concept in Python with pygame and python-av!

so far it functions as a launcher for general Linux applicatons (like Kodi and EmulationStation), it's able to read EmulationStation gamelist.xml files and display their contents and directly launch the games, it supports controller + keyboard/mouse navigation, and there's more to be planned, like custom theme support!

still needs a lot of love before it sees a release (and this may end up being remade into a part of a much larger retro UI recreation project), but thought i'd show it off here. :)

Vanilla World of Warcraft on the 1GB Raspberry Pi 5! No-Lifers across the world rejoice!

been testing a lot of games on my 1GB Raspberry Pi 5, and the most recent of them is World of Warcraft 1.12.1! runs way better than the game did on my actual desktop way back in the day, so apart from the transparency issues (cursor flickering is a VNC issue, not an actual game issue), i'd say this game passes with flying carpets for playability. i'm sure the framerate will dip in crowded towns/dungeons, but it feels great out in the open!

[XFCE4] I Can't Believe It's Not Windows 9x!

got a Raspberry Pi 5 in the mail recently, so i've decided to set it up an SD card to use it as a small retro PC for the time being. nothing too wild, but it's fun to have a setup that emulates my childhood PC. ideally i'll be picking up a Logitech G15, a mouse of the era and a CRT monitor and using that with it too!

Hey folks, long time no post!

I've recently started dabbling in working on custom map packs and models for the Xbox version of Counter-Strike, but it's been...a journey, to put it lightly. Turns out, virtually every modding resource for this game under the sun has been purged from the internet (csxmaps.tk and csxmoddingforum.tk are both long-dead and have zero working Wayback Machine links), and the only tool that still exists that supports this game in any capacity is Watto's Game Extractor, which is both a paid utility, and doesn't actually provide any usable information on how to deal with the game's assets once extracted.

Does anyone who was there when the Ancient Texts were written have any tutorials on successfully converting map and model files from the PC versions of 1.5/1.6/CZ, with working textures and all? I know XPR texture conversion is involved SOMEWHERE, but where? Who knows.

As you can see below, I've made SOME progress on an .SXWAD unpacker/repacker, which has allowed me to port some assets over, but I've run into headache after headache.

As seen in the photos, the maps don't have textures (the first map I attempted to port was cs_starwars, but that idea was quickly scrapped as CSX does not have func_vehicle like most other Goldsrc games), load times practically triple, the LoD and textures on the custom weapon viewmodels is entirely broken, despite hand textures being 100% normal (the weapons shown here are a CS:S viewmodel pack someone created for 1.6), and other assets like player models and world models immediately crash the game upon loading them in.

This can't ALL be lost knowledge, can it? I remember the CSX modding community being pretty sizeable back in the day, so its' kind of surprising that zero information about it exists at this point outside of 3 different map packs that have survived the test of time.

Look ma, CS:S hands!

Non-euclidean weaponry is SO hot this year.

Stanced UP!
