How many POVs are too many?

I currently have five POVs that I switch in between depending on whose POV processes the story at the moment but I'm a bit worried it might be too much. Two of the POVs are also not going to be any more than 4-5 chapters throughout the whole book but still ...

How do you create religions?

This may be a very stupid question but I have never ever had to come up with religions or deities before. And I'm kinda lost on how to start.

I tried doing research on Reddit before posting and I read that religions need traditions and rituals so I should have that but it still feels like a big intimidating monster I'm trying to conquer. I don't quite know how or where to start

I like Claude more than ChatGPT

after careful comparison (5 minutes and 22 seconds) I decided that I like Claude more than ChatGPT when it comes to writing.

Okay, but jokes aside I gave Claude a try yesterday throughout the day. i tried various version but I like Opus 4.6 the best. He (or she, idk I always call Chattie a He) has been giving me better creative input for when I didn’t know what to do with a specific scene than ChatGPT EVER has.

In fact, ChatGPT has been nothing but a ragebait for me personally lately. I became so annoyed with every single response ChatGPT had that I outright started being rude to Chattie. Whatever they did with Chattie in the past few weeks - yikes.

So I‘m switching to Claude. As soon as the test week is done - which is a bit of a nuisance with the daily limit - and I can choose a cheaper plan than those €30 per month I‘ll promote Claude to Chief Writing Advisor Supreme or something like that.

How do you start existing again?

I‘m in law school. I have been for over 10yrs because I never managed to actually study for my exams. Funnily enough, I WANT to study law though.

I have no friends. The only person texting me every few days is a guy I hooked up with 7yrs ago. He became my best and my only friend.

I have no job. Every job not being in fast food or a grocery store demands some kind of degree. Or they don’t take me because I‘m too old. 29 is too old apparently. As a woman it‘s even more an issue because employers will be afraid I‘ll look for a job just to get pregnant within a year. It‘s not something they outright told me but it’s an „open secret“-reason in my country not to hire women my age.

I wish I had a job I could complain about because then at least I would have a job.

So my parents finance everything in my life right now. They give me enough to pay rent and insurances but not enough to „treat myself“ to anything other than what I NEED from the grocery store to not starve.

Men don’t want to date me. I haven’t had a relationship in eight years even though I get told I‘m oh sooo pretty and hit on sexually often. Something must be severely wrong with me for guys to not want to be with me for more than fun.

… for the first time I thought about … well … ending it all. Not because I want to but because I feel like I‘m not even really existing anymore.

How does one start existing again? How do you get out of that hole and become a living person again?

Some people here like the idea of writing a book but don‘t want to do the work and it shows

I might get hate for this but I had to put this out there nontheless because at this point it‘s just ridiculous.

For the past couple of weeks I have been flabbergasted by the amount of posts asking others to come up with detailed plots, story ideas and whole magic systems for the book they want to write.

A couple of days ago there even was somebody demanding others to post pictures of fantasy races because their own five-second Google search didn’t turn up what they were looking for.

… Really?

If you have no creativity, okay. Then maybe you should think about whether writing a book that you want to publish - literally a field dependent on creativity - is for you.

But some people here have been treating Redditors like their own - obviously unpaid because ain‘t none of you paying a cent for the kind of demands you have - personal assistents and expecting to get 80% of the work that goes into writing a book be served to them on a silver platter.

Because I think we can agree that 70-80% of writing a book is research, world building etc. and 20-30% is actually sitting down in front of a computer and writing it.

Writing a book is work. Hours of research and preparation before you even start your first sentence. If you‘re not up for that, okay, but don’t expect others to do the work for you so you can just “reap the rewards“ as in just write it all out.

Do your own research.
Use your own brain.

Looking for people who‘d be interested in side-by-side writing sessions

Hi! So lately I wondering whether there are people that would be interested in writing sessions where you just keeping each other company while writing and where you could also occasionally talk about things like „Hey, do you think an evil witch would rather have red or black hair?“ (just a very simple example).

Only thing is I‘m 29 so I‘d prefer to join up with people who are 18+.

  • Genres: (Dark) Fantasy, Supernatural Fiction, Psychological Fiction
  • Writing Level: German is my mother tongue so perfect there (I’m also writing in German), but I also passed the CAE on C2 with an A and occasionally mix english books into my reading list so I think I can safely say I‘m well-versed in English
  • Goals: Best scenario would be getting published but I‘m kind of partial to self-publishing. I‘d rather go official, via a publishing company.
  • Expectations: As much advice and help as I‘m able and willing to give I‘d like back, of course. Showing drafts/pieces of my work would help nobody I assume since I‘m writing in German but sometimes talking through details of certain moments - whether this or that would be a good idea, how to set up this scene etc etc - would be really helpful. And as I said I have no issues reciprocating that same level of support.
  • Commitment: I don‘t write every day but I have ADHD so I‘m very good at hyperfocusing, meaning once I sit down I don‘t get up until I have written a full chapter from beginning to end. Sometimes I may stay at only one chapter per writing session but my chapters are quite long and I do extensive research too while writing. Maybe my hyperfocus „ability“ would be motivational to some?
  • Meeting place: Online, since I was born and live in Central Europe.

If anybody is interested do feel free to send me a DM too! Just a quick warning: I accidentally ignored a message request earlier because my fingers hit the wrong button on my iPad so if I don’t respond within two hours and it’s not sleeping time in Central EU please send a „control“ message 😅

Any german writers wanting to be writing buddies perhaps?

Actually I was debating whether to ask at all but why not? Also english writing subreddits are much bigger than german ones so I thought that my chances of finding similar people might be higher here. I am solely writing in German and at some point hope to maybe publish too.

The good thing is since I have ADHD I can hyperfocus so well on writing that once I sit down to write I start and finish a whole chapter in one sitting. Maybe I can motivate people with that „ability“?

I‘m 29 and mostly writing fantasy and urban fiction with a Stephen-King-style kind of fantasy twist. I was thinking it would be nice to find people that also are German - or Austrian, since I‘m Viennese hahaha - or are just writing in German who would like to be writing buddies motivating and helping each other with their work.

Rivington is very overstimulating but also the funniest area so far

I‘ve been called a pervert by gnome washing his pits, have met a guy travelling with his wife, sister and mother who all dislike each other (poor guy lmao) and been turned into cheese for saying „DO YOUR WORST, YOU CHEATING BASTARD“ to a cheating bastard.

I‘ve been laughing non-stop ahahaha

i‘ll go first

- „he growled"

- when a sentence starts with „xy by xyx was playing in the back as I swerved my hips/put on my glossy lipstick or shimmering eye shadow or whatever“

- too many details on descriptions of how Y/N looks, from the fabric of her dress that hugs her hips perfectly of course to the curls around her shoulders

- „males“ and „females“ when it comes to humanoids instead of them being plain men and women

- horrible parents and/or a spiteful sister

- forced proximity with books; either Y/N HAS to be a book lover or wakes up in a luxurious bedroom with stacks of books or smh there‘s a library she has to spend time in

Yes, those cursive fonts and big letters are very pretty but every time I read through the comments it‘s 90% constructive criticism on grammar mistakes, inconsistencies in the plot etc.

You know what style my editor wants my manuscripts in? Ugly-ass typewriter font with double spacing to allow for corrections, no extra alignment, no automatic separation, nothing. If I intend for words to appear in cursive I have to underline them. That manuscript looks so boring and basic it‘s shocking but my editor doesn‘t care because it‘s WHAT I wrote, not HOW I presented it.

Pretty fonts, special formats etc can all be added once the book is being prepared for printing but until you get there it‘s about the content.

i hope you guys understand what I mean

For example, I don't talk to or show anybody anything about what I'm currently writing until it's finished and in the printer. Also, the only person who gets to read my finished but unpolished manuscript ahead of time is my dad. But up until the point he gets to read - and correct it if he wants to - even he doesn't even KNOW about me writing anything at all.

Do you guys have any superstitions or little extra habits/pet peeves?
