I’m boycotting Panoxyl and wanted to share why

(I probably picked the wrong flair but wasn’t sure which one fit best)

Hi all. I’ve been using Panoxyl for years and last year when I was switching many of my hygiene products to bar form, I was excited to find that Panoxyl came in a bar! I am finally on my last bottle of Panoxyl so I went to the store to get a bar, but was disappointed to find out the bar was in a plastic wrapper, which was then in a carton. The carton even bragged about being recyclable and biodegradable. In the same aisle, my favorite face wash (Cerave, just mentioning the brand to make the point that it’s also a major skincare brand that probably has to follow the same packaging regulations) was in bar form with the bar directly in the carton, without a wrapper.

I figured if I wanted things to change, I should email the company and tell them that I was turned off by the unnecessary plastic wrapper as well as the greenwashing on the carton.

I was already planning to stop buying Panoxyl after that, but their response solidified it:

“Thank you for thinking so highly of us. While we are not able to accept or review unsolicited product ideas, we truly appreciate your enthusiasm for our brand. Our teams are always working on future innovations, and we encourage you to keep an eye on our website for any new product updates.”

???
I was so confused. Did they even read my comment?
I don’t remember saying anything about thinking highly of them (though maybe said something along the lines of, I’ve been using your product for years but then made it clear that I wasn’t going to anymore unless they got rid of the wrapper) and wasn’t suggesting a product idea. And was adding in the word “unsolicited” really necessary?

I replied clarifying my actual complaint again and also mentioned that I will be sharing my concerns about the packaging and their reply with other environmentally conscious consumers.

Only THEN did they reply with the expected “we take your feedback seriously and will make sure your concerns are shared with the team” etc etc. Because they obviously care about me sharing my concerns with people like you. Hence this post!

Not sure how many of you guys use Panoxyl (I’m sure there are tons of better brands out there with probably more eco-friendly ingredients, I just am not very knowledgeable about the environmental impact of different ingredients so initially was going to stick with what I knew worked for me) but I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone finds it helpful.

And I realize the small amount of plastic in the wrapper is much less than the amount of plastic it takes to make the bottle (not to mention how much better it is to transport the lighter bar without all of the added water), so it’s definitely an improvement, but still completely unnecessary and disappointing so something I’ll be doing without

Soggy Watermelon?

Husband made a fruit platter for a potluck two weeks ago while I was out of town and now we have some leftover. The watermelon is really soggy and hard to eat by itself. I don’t think it’s “gone bad” in the sense that it would be dangerous to eat it though, kinda like how I think of wilted spinach.

Any ideas for what I could do with the soggy watermelon that’s past its prime? Should I try making a smoothie or will I end up just ruining the smoothie?

Help! I got part of my futon wet

I moved my futon over to the side of my room to vacuum the tatami mats and carpet underneath. Afterwards, I realized part of it got placed on top of my cat's water bowl. I took the cotton duvet cover off and that got a lot of the moisture but the FBFJ mattress underneath also got wet. The wet spot is probably about 1.5 feet in length. Right now I have it hanging over the stair bannister with a fan blowing on it because it's about to sprinkle outside. After it's done sprinkling I'm planning on hanging it on my balcony to get some sunlight and help it dry. Is there anything else I should be doing? I called FBFJ but it's 5am there so I'm hoping they'll call me back in a few hours and give me any additional instructions. Hopefully I didn't just completely ruin it, I've only had it for a few months

Are these real?

New to this but I think these marketplace birks are real based on reading through the pinned post on reals vs fakes…but I also can’t tell why some of the fakes on the post are fakes so hoping to get some of your more experienced eyes to tell me what you think!

Can EVA be resoled with natural rubber?

Was about to get my first pair of Birks but was disappointed to find out that all of the outsoles are now made of EVA and I can’t get any shoes that are made of 100% natural materials. But I was wondering, if I get a pair that’s made of EVA, would I be able to later get it resoled with natural rubber? Or does it have to be resoled with the same material as it was originally? I’d probably go to a local shop to get them resoled, if that matters. There are a few around me that are official Birkenstock retailers. I’m guessing the brick-and-mortar Birkenstock stores would only resole with EVA.

Data point re:FBFJ

Just wanted to share a data point about my purchase from Futon Beds From Japan. I ordered a shikibuton from them two weeks ago (without any customizations) and there was a red banner scrolling on top saying that orders placed probably won’t ship for up to 8 weeks.

Well, I got notified yesterday that it shipped! Very pleasantly surprised!

I was also confused about when I’d be paying the Customs fees for import into the US, since when I placed my order, I was only charged for the mattress. Their email from today clarified that those are collected by UPS and that I can either pay them via the tracking link or on arrival.

New to floorsleeping, questions about carpet & starter setup

Hi everyone! My husband and I just closed on a condo and we want to try floor-sleeping. The bedroom is carpeted. I wanted to get your opinions on what to try. I always try to get everything secondhand and also minimize plastics if possible, so that limits our options a bit. I was considering getting a mattress topper made of natural materials from FB marketplace to put on the carpet, would that be a good idea for someone starting out? Would I have to put something underneath it to prevent mold, or lift it every day? We live in a dry climate so hopefully that can help keep mold at bay. Not sure if the room being carpeted helps or hurts the mold concern. Thanks in advance for your input!

Edited to add: We'd also likely need to use the mattress topper for our sofa bed when guests come over, so the mattress topper would serve dual purposes. And for when it's in use, we were thinking of just using sleeping bags on the carpet for ourselves

Any last-minute tips before closing?

My husband and I are about to be new homeowners. We close on a condo tomorrow. I’m looking through the 125-page closing documents beforehand and there’s a lot. It made me wonder if any of you have any regrets of things you didn’t ask about or mention during closing? Or anything else to look out for tomorrow? Anything I should be wary about signing? I’m reading through it all but a lot of the new homeowner language I don’t fully understand so I don’t want to end up making a mistake tomorrow that I’ll regret for years to come just because I didn’t know to clarify or ask about something ahead of time

What are these lights in the sky?

I’m in downtown Littleton facing west and there are these flashing lights of different colors in the sky. Anyone know what’s going on? Is there some light show tonight?

I tried to do a search because I’m sure this question gets asked a lot but I couldn’t find what I was looking for in my search. Usually I do laundry when my clothes smell or have something on them. But if I waited to do that with all of my merino stuff, I would be washing it very infrequently! So just curious how often you guys wash your merino stuff. Socks, underwear, bras, base layers, sweaters, hats? I think that covers everything I have that’s merino. I want to figure out a good balance of taking care of my merino to avoid overwashing it while also being cognizant of hygiene. Thanks!
