Why does Fitbit claim shorter strides are more efficient?

At the bottom of the details for each walk , it reports my "stride length" as 0.89m. Of course, that is actually my step length, with the stride length being twice that. It does seem to be about right for my step length, though.

It then makes the ridiculous statement that "Shorter stride length is associated with higher efficiency." Even Google AI isn't that stupid. If shorter were always better, then a stride length of 0cm would be the most efficient, but that produces zero movement and has the lowest possible efficiency. The most efficient stride length depends on height, speed, and details of joints and bones, and most people naturally adopt a stride length close to the most efficient one for their bodies.

It might be nice for the fitbit app to calculate the "walk ratio" (mm/step)/(steps/min), which tends to be nearly invariant for an individual (steps get longer as the cadence goes up). My walk ratio is around 6.4 mm•min/step^2, which is pretty normal (though the range is wider than Google AI's interpretation of walk ratio, which thinks that even 1 SD up is profoundly weird).

Santa Cruz Symphony AI art

We got our Santa Cruz Symphony 2027 season brochure and were distressed to see 8 obviously AI images credited to the music director. How can any artist in Santa Cruz be unaware of the strong antipathy toward AI-generated art in the local community? Have they learned nothing from the kerfuffle about the Salty Otter logo or the Good Times cover for the article about Atlantis Fantasyworld?

My family usually donates to the Santa Cruz Symphony, but are considering withholding our donation this year as protest for the tone-deaf, anti-artist marketing.

Moving boxes available

I put out a few moving boxes for BMEB majors, but only about ¾ of them were taken. If anyone else still needs some, the remainders are on my porch (444 Van Ness Ave, between King and Escalona).

UCB EECS students get wake-up call

https://www.dailycal.org/news/campus/academics/failing-grades-soar-as-professors-see-greater-ai-usage-dwindling-math-skills-in-uc-berkeley/article_16fad0bf-02cb-4b8c-8d88-888ffd9f8608.html

>
According to Berkeleytime, 35.3% of CS 10 students and 10.6% of CS 61A students received F’s in spring 2026. In spring 2025 and spring 2024, the percentage of F’s did not exceed 10% for either class.

…

>“Some of the numbers that you saw from the number of students who receive failing grades were because we caught them (cheating) and prosecuted them and are sending their cases to the Center for Student Conduct,” Garcia said. “But in other cases, it’s students who are leaning a little too hard on LLMs to do their work for them, and then at exam time just really aren’t ready.”
