3 weeks Scotland: Aug 20-Sept 10 need help with changing season and notorious overpacker as

Hello!
I’m trying to pack as light as possible for this trip while still feeling prepared for potential warm days or cold rainy falls days. I’m from Vancouver, Canada so I know rainy weather but not sure I fully know what I am getting into. Apparently there is also a heatwave going on in the UK but it looks mild on the weather app.

I’m 32F if that helps, and my plan is 5-6 days in Edinburgh for fridge fest, a tour of the islands, a couple days each in Aberdeen and Inverness and then a few days in Glasgow.

I’m wanting some cute outfits for the cities, including a date night outfit, comfy wear, layers and some solid hiking outfits for the highlands.

I plan to purchase a lovely Shetland sheep wool sweater while I am in Scotland as a cold layer when I arrive. Not pictured is a pair of pjs.

My partner says 4 is not many shoes which I agree but he is a less experienced traveller and I want good walking shoes for city, and hiking, and nice walkable shoes for a date (my Sorel sandales).

Potentially add ons:
- a denim jacket
- a leather trench coat (waterproof)
- a pair of jeans or trousers
- two hats (one baseball, one touque)
- tights? (Do I just go to PRIMARK?)

Any feedback is great - please be kind as I am a serious overpacker and this is the best I can do. 😅

Is this painting done? What would you add?

Working my way through this medium and this is my first piece I’ve made without using someone’s finished work as a reference.

It keeps incomplete - I think I need more details or shadows to make it look finished but I’m scared to over do it.

Appreciate any thoughts or feedback

So I had no idea arches was made with gelatin and that wet on wet first layer absolutely REEKS like my dogs chew treats!

More of an observation than a question but I splurged on my first pack of arches and just did a wet base layer and P.U. Omg does it smell bad.

And that’s how I learned about the gelatin sizing.

Is it always this foul?
Will I get used to it?

I am liking the experience of the paper but the smell is tough- I need to light a candle!

PSA: masking fluid is AMAZING! How to better use it?

New to watercolour, and have just starting playing around with masking fluid and wow it makes it so much easier to paint dark backgrounds with lighter foreground pieces!

What other ways do people use it?

Really wanting to find the artist so I can credit her as a reference AND explore more of her art as I love her style

It’s such a gorgeous use of watercolour and I’d love to be able to credit it.

How to darken watercolours to look more “moody”

I used an oil painting version of this on Pinterest as a reference photo.

I’ve never done human skin before and I’m liking how it’s turning out but the original is so moody and gorgeous and I’ve seen some talented artists be able to use watercolour to create moody pieces but I’m not sure how.

I know oil is just so good for baroque and moody pieces but I’ve seen it done with watercolour too!

Maybe I’m just afraid to go dark?

Can I go over this current piece with darker shades and see how it goes? I think I’m also worried about the “muddy” effect and also with blending.

Thank you to this wonderful community to any advice

Has anyone taken a drawing class to help with their watercolour? Did it actually help?

Loving my watercolour journey so far and I can see my improvements as I go with daily practice.

I would love to do some more art and challenging pieces but especially landscapes with buildings or non-nature things that leave less room for organic variance. My issue is that my drawing skills hold me back.

I know landscape, still life, urban settings, animals portraits and people/bodies are all their own skill, but it’s tough when I spent 3 hours sketching a leg/foot i didn’t get to paint.

Did anyone take a drawing class to help improve their skills for use of watercolour? Was it worth it?

Does anyone feel the stress / anxiety of ruining a watercolor piece right at the end?

I’m done this piece minus the shadows and I’m so worried about wrecking it. I’ve 100% ruined a piece with an ugly shadow addition at the end.

Does anyone else have this stress?

I’m finding with watercolour that one mistake means it’s all ruined as opposed to gouache, acrylic or oil.

Pray for me I’m gonna attempt it 🎨🤞🏻

Pacific Leaders Question- In person courses in another province

Hey-

I have heard of people taking a LWOP to do a year abroad for their bachelors while working in gov with pacific leaders.

Has anyone heard of allowing a short term move for one year with pacific leaders for graduate school?

The program I want to take is in another province and is in person only- is my only option to take LWOP? I know we have hired people who lived in other provinces and gave them time to move to BC while they work remotely.

It would be temporary just for the duration of the program and id like to be working while I attend.

How much of your watercolour time is spent drawing?

I’m new to watercolour (about 3/4 weeks) and I’m really loving it.

Learning techniques, paper, detail etc- it’s been awesome.

However, I am really not the best drawer. I’m okay, but it’s not intuitive and I enjoy that part less. I want to just get to the painting part.i also wonder if I won’t really begin to progress in watercolor if I don’t also take time to improve my drawing skills.

So curious to everyone, how good is your drawing skills? How much drawing do you do before water colouring?

Thank you! ☺️
