Kitchen update: new grout for the win!

(Pics are after, before, after, before, during)

I posted a couple weeks ago asking for advice and how to update my kitchen on a budget. I recognized that the tile flooring made it look outdated but changing it up was not in the budget.

Many of you recommended changing the grout color to something light. Seemed like an easy enough project - i applied grout refresh in "bone" ($20 at home depot) with a kids toothbrush after deep cleaning with zep grout cleaner ($10) and a grout brush. It was a tough couple days and my knees still hate me but i'm so pleased with the results! The tiles look new and so much less dated.

Also took your advice to add color with a rug and more plants. Brought my kitchen from 1996 to at least 2012 😂

Sharing a view that makes me happy

The art in between the windows is new. I had originally wanted an arched cabinet for that space and after 3 attempts at ordering one online failed for various (ridiculous) reasons, I changed my mind and decided it looked better with just a table (inherited from my grandparents) and an art piece. Makes the space feel more open. I'm really happy with it so please don't shit all over it, reddit.

Without painting cabinets, how can I update/elevate my kitchen?

Cabinets are good quality wood and fairly new (less than 8 years, installed by previous owner). So i don't want to paint. But I struggle with the kitchen feeling dated and little too country. Others have suggested changing flooring, which i'm not against but the space is pretty large so...$$$.

Would love to hear some ideas that won't require taking out a second mortgage.

Is canvas art tacky?

I've been searching for a large art piece for my living room for weeks (maybe even months). I'm too cheap/poor to afford a one-off piece (thought I'm still open to it if the price is right) but I'm noticing that a lot of online shops only offer large pieces (over 30"x40") in canvas vs. framed prints. It's frustrating because I've found pieces I really like (this one is 'Ciao" from PSTR studio) but only smaller sizes come as framed prints. Canvas makes me think of the mass produced crap from Target, which I'm trying to avoid.

So is framed canvas art tacky? And if so, where are we finding beautiful, large-scale art that doesn't cost thousands?

Edited: I should have clarified. Of course original art on canvas is not tacky. I know artists paint on canvas all the time. But when buying a print or other non-original piece of art, does having it printed on canvas look cheaper/tackier than having it printed on high-quality paper and framed under glass?

Love my new linen curtains!

I just had these hemmed to the length I want and while they still need to be steamed and I should probably train the plates a bit better, I'm really happy with them. I wanted something a little bit relaxed that would let the light through but could be closed if necessary. We live out in the country so privacy is not an issue. Also, for everyone saying I'm going to burn my house down, our heat is hydronic baseboards and they barely get warm, even in the winter when they're on for long periods.

How many inches to take off my curtains?

I'm taking these linen curtain panels to a seamstress in a matter of hours and I need to figure out how many inches to have her take off. The panels are currently 96 inches long and are clearly too long, but i do like having a slight break on the floor (3rd photo is my inspo), but don't want the end result to look sloppy. 6"? More? Less? Help!

Do these wood tones work together?

The piece on the right is from an (unassembled) arched cabinet that just arrived set against the wood trim/millwork in my home (that column on the left). I was surprised that the color is much different than I expected. Now I'm freaking out that it does not work with the woodwork in my home. Do they clash? Should I return it? I don't want to make my husband build this damn thing only to decide it doesn't go and needs to be returned.

I should add my goal was not to "match" the wood tones but I did think they'd be more harmonious and warm-toned based on the product photo. Idk.

Sharing for those who followed my chair saga. New ones arrived today!

In love! I splurged on these but I'm so glad I did. They're the Sorrento chair from Poly & Bark. The leather feels so sexy (though reviewers were right that they're deep - currently in the market for some lumbar pillows to remedy that).

Talk to me about wool carpeting. Worth the expense?

Looking to re-carpet a large room (650 sq ft) in my home. I'm drawn to wool for all the benefits - more insulating, sustainable, wears better with age, stain resistance. But damn, it's pricey. Like 2-3x more per sq ft than even nice synthetic carpet. I don't know anyone with wool carpeting though so I'm curious if it lives up to the hype and is worth it. The room I'm considering it for is the large "family room" in our home, where we spend most of our time. Big sectional couch, a wet bar, and a woodstove with very large windows. I want something cozy but I hate the look and feel of the current carpet (a thick gray shag).

What type of chairs should replace the brown leather ones?

I actually really love the look of these chairs, but they're pretty beat. Purchased from target circa 2015 and the fake leather is peeling off in places. Not sure if I'm looking for something similar since most fake leather looks so terrible (and I don't want to spend a fortune on real leather), but in shopping around I can't seem to find something that looks right with the couch (a light oatmeal tweed) and is the right scale (can't do anything too big since the area on the right is a path of travel).

My current favorite is this indigo striped chair (2nd pic) from The Inside but at $700 a pop plus shipping, I can't bring myself to spend over $1500 on 2. But this is the style I'm going for. I love vintage eclectic, Americana, New England vibes.

Also worth noting that I change rugs pretty often, but I'm always drawn to deep reds, rust, and indigo.

Replace current black chairs with these?

I like an eclectic earthy modern farmhouse vibe (i literally live in an 1860s farmhouse). Would these chairs (1st photo) work better than the current ones? I don't want wood because there's already so much woodwork/wood tones in the room. The price on 4 of these is very good.

Anyone else's husband seriously drop the ball on mother's day?

I can't decide if I'm being an ungrateful bitch or if my disappointment is warranted. My husband got me an address sign we've been talking about getting for our house (why is it a gift for me?) and grocery store flowers he bought on the way home from work yesterday. He tells me I make all holidays miserable because he can never please me. Idk. I feel sad. Every single second of motherhood is hard. I just wanted to feel seen for one day out of the year. Yesterday evening was like any other. I made dinner (which he insulted), cleaned the kitchen, put the kids to bed. Nothing special.

Not to mention the fact that he doesn't have to lift a finger to celebrate his own mom. I got her flowers (a $70 arrangement from an actual florist), a fancy scented candle, and a card. I mentioned that and how he never said thank you, and he said sarcastically, "oh wow, you ordered flowers." Well if it's that easy, why didnt you do it for me, the mother of your children?

Eta: also he cheated on me 3 years ago when my daughter was a newborn and I was still on maternity leave. The bar is in hell.
