Cancel trip due to wildfires?

Hi, I’m sure this is a common question you get. I asked this in the British Columbia subreddit 5 days ago and the general consensus was don’t cancel, it varies day to day and just try to be flexible. But then this state of emergency happened and the wildfires grew much worse in the last 24 hours.

Our 10 day visit (leaving Aug 12th) is Vancouver to Whistler to Kamloops (rest stop) to Revelstoke to Yoho/Banff. We were going to do two days in Revelstoke, which would land about August 17-18th, doing Mt. Revelstoke and a hike in Glacier National Park.

I really do understand conditions vary and we were fine with that, but this seems to have moved into more dangerous territory. I mean, Revelstoke AQI is like 250+. Should we cancel or still go and hope for the best? That’s a lot of money down the drain if things stay bad and/or we get unlucky.

No longer showing delivery estimates for my default address

A few days ago I noticed Amazon is showing the earliest possible delivery date based on pickup locations near me when I first click on the item. When I go to checkout, it is now asking me every single time which address to deliver to instead of just defaulting to my home address, and then the delivery date estimate changes. It’s driving me crazy and making it so I can’t make decisions upfront on items if they won’t be here in time.

Is there a way to fix this?

Homemade jerky from the US

Hi! My partner and I are flying into Vancouver for a hiking trip later this month from the United States. Very excited to see BC’s beauty.

We want to bring homemade jerky over the border but we’re finding conflicting information. Some seem to say you can’t bring homemade dried meats at all, some say it’s fine only if it’s from the US, and some say you can bring dried meats but it has to be commercially packaged.

If we seal it well and label it as homemade jerky and only have a couple pounds, is that okay? Or is there some restriction we’re missing? It would really suck to go through all the effort and have it confiscated.

As a note, the reason we can’t bring commercial jerky is I am sensitive to ingredients in packaged jerky, hence why I make it myself.

Thanks in advance!

Layering/clothing question for BC summer hikes of varying elevation

Hi! We'll be hiking in Whistler, Revelstoke, and Yoho/Banff in mid-August. We are from a tropical region that gets no snow, so we really don't have the best handle on not underdoing or overdoing layers. My understanding is in higher alpine areas like the Canadian Rockies, it can get windy/stormy and colder in the mornings and evenings, which means bringing a warm mid-layer and a rain jacket/windbreaker outer shell.

My question is how warm of a base layer and mid-layer for summer? Is a regular (non-cotton) tank top or light shirt fine as a base? For the mid-layer a lot of options seem to be a fleece-lined polyester or polyester/spandex blend--is the fleece too warm for summer? Also concerned about ease of carrying layers around. Our outer shells are easily packable, but the mid-layers seem bulkier.

I was also curious if we may need something to keep our ears warm and/or gloves? Or is that overkill? We are going scrambling for the first time (just one hike, a beginner friendly scramble in Yoho -- Paget Peak) so I was wondering what type of gloves could double to keep warm and protect from scratches on the rocks.

Thanks in advance! We've hiked in the Smoky Mountains before but it's not nearly as high of elevations as where we're going.

Summer Alpine Experience Ticket and Trail Confusion

Hi! My partner and I are taking a 10 day BC hiking/scenic trip in mid-August, and one of our stops is 2 days in Whistler. Day 1 we're doing Squamish area/Sea-to-Sky Gondola/Stawamus, etc. Day 2 we have Joffre Lake as one option, and in the case we can't get passes, we were looking at Highnote Trail.

It seems there is some confusion in policy on the website and forums between the passes and the day tickets. I want to make sure the day ticket is refundable--that way we can get it in advance and if we happen to snag Joffre passes two days before, we can get a refund for the Summer Alpine Experience day tickets. But I had trouble confirming if they're refundable. My understanding is regardless it's best to book in advance to avoid a long line wait on the day of. How should we play this? Is it best to book in advance? Are they actually refundable?

Our other point of confusion was Highnote Trail itself--will this ticket grant us access to the trailhead? Is it through the Blackcomb Gondola or some other entry point? We were confused on which gondolas provide that access.

Other than Highnote Trail, any other must-do trail suggestions? We'd love one moderate-hard in difficulty no more than 5ish hours, then maybe a couple shorter and/or easier scenic ones to end the day.

I also wanted to confirm, if we are up on the mountain past the closing time of the gondolas, are we screwed? Or is it not that terrible/long to hike down to base? lol

Thanks in advance!

Summer Sunrise Options in Vancouver - Open Parking/Places

Hi! We'll be in Vancouver in mid-August when the sunrise is at 6am, meaning we'd want to park somewhere by 5:30am to enjoy it. Looking at Stanley Park areas, Jericho Beach, etc., it looks like parking lots don't open until 6am which would be too late to watch the full sunrise. I tried researching this on google and on Reddit and there’s a lot of conflicting information about what is and isn’t allowable.

Where can we park so that isn't an issue? Thanks in advance!

Question on improvement between eyes

Hi! I've been measuring at home (in addition to getting an annual exam for health reasons and because it's free with my insurance -- I don't use the provided prescription, of course, and instead under-correct but it gives me a sanity check). I just got to 20/20 again with my last diopter drop, but this kind of progression is new to me so I want to check that I'm about to make the correct under-correction with my next order of glasses and contacts. My whole life my eyes were 0.5 diopters apart, and now... that difference is nearly gone.

My last three contacts 20/20 progressions were:

L -4.25 R -4.75

L -4.5 R -4.75

L -4 R -4 (consistently measured this past week and confirmed at my annual appointment today)

This is measuring 20/20 vision when my eyes are not tired (I don't really care if they're a little under 20/20 at night). As you can see, it's like my left eye got worse to correct for the difference between the eyes, then my right eye got better and came down to meet my left.

I tested some sample contacts around 12pm to be sure and these were the results:

L -3.75 R -3.75 -- 20/20 vision line was a little blurry, and my right eye seemed a little blurrier than my left

L -3.75 R -4 -- 20/20 in both, but left eye a little blurrier than right

L -4 R -4 -- slightly better than 20/20 in both (can read 20/15), but right eye still a little blurrier

These results map well to the cm to diopter calc too when my contacts are out. It seems my eyes are NEARLY the same, like they're between a 0 and a 0.25 diopter difference but it rounds to 0. And that the 20/20 vision is between -3.75 and -4.

Given that, if I go forward with the same measurement in each eye, will that final difference naturally correct from there? Or would there always be a little bit of difference, but it's safe to use the same prescription now regardless of how it may fluctuate? I would assume there's likely little danger of them becoming farther apart than 0.25 again but please correct me if I'm wrong or if there are any considerations here.

Also if you assess that your 20/20 vision is between two standard diopter measurements, do you err on the side of taking a larger (0.5 + a portion of 0.25) step down to -3.25 or a smaller (0.25 + a portion of 0.25) step down to -3.5? To clarify I'm not asking to tell me which to do, I'm asking more so what are the pros and cons of being more conservative or taking a larger leap so I can assess. Thank you!

Scorpion and Lion Ending Bug

Hi, I just nearly finished the scorpion and lion quest. I ended up >!killing Dijaam after I wouldn’t let her leave without splitting the statue profits with me!< and now I can’t teleport anywhere. My next quest objective is >!to sell the scarabeus to a fence!< but when I try to teleport to Ark, or anywhere, I get the message “a sharp pain passes through your body” and my teleport scroll is returned to my inventory. What is going on? Am I supposed to walk all the way to Ark to finish this quest? Or did something deeper break??

Edit: If this is relevant, I’m on Black Light Part I for the main quest, and just have A Song in the Silence left of the three subquests. Between each subquest, I was doing some side quests.

EDIT EDIT: This is essentially resolved. I’m not sure WHY the game does this for this particular quest but my guess is it won’t let you fast travel while >!the scarabeus is in your inventory, probably because it’s a stolen high value item. Once I sold it to a fence in the undercity, I could teleport again.!< An annoying trek back to Ark though.

Dreams of the Dead possible bug?

Hi! I did one part of Black Light Part 1, where I obtained one black stone (the quest with Jespar). I teleported to the Sun Temple, didn’t even deliver the stone yet, and a girl delivered a letter to me from Lexil which prompted the Dreams of the Dead quest to investigate >!Lishari’s death by reading her memories!<. When I looked this up, all the forums say this is supposed to trigger after Black Light Part 1 is complete but I’m only a third done. Is this a game-breaking bug potentially? Should I do anything? Am I safe to go ahead with the Dreams of the Dead now or should I wait to read the letter from Lexil until I finish getting all the stones?

Zenni w/o prescription - optical focus measurement issues

Hi! I’m an office worker and have seen an improvement so far of 1-1.25 diopters, from (glasses prescription) -5.75 to -4.5 in my right eye and -5.25 to -4.25 in my left eye. My current glasses are from Zenni since they don’t require a prescription, and those are 0.25 lower than my actual measurement (so -4.25 R and -4 L). (Edit: I do also have my close up work glasses at -3 R and -2.75 L, again about 0.25 lower for that close range distance for the blur challenge).

The issue I’m running into right now with making progress is I didn’t realize how off my optical center was. You provide the PD to Zenni, but they don’t ask about the VERTICAL pupil position. When I tilt my head back and look straight ahead through my glasses at an angle, the extra blurriness clears up and I can see better—EVEN things up close! I was reading that that could be due to the optical focus being measured incorrectly.

I got contacts that are -4.25 R and -4 L, the same as my glasses at a 0.25 decrease from my full script, and I regret doing that. They’re crystal clear lol. I read that contacts and glasses can stay the same after you hit 4 or below diopters and that’s probably another lie.

But the difference between my contacts and glasses seems more than just 0.5. It’s like my glasses are extra blurry. Is Zenni a bad option to get reduced diopters without a script? Is there somewhere else that does a better job measuring? I want to make progress faster and it took me a while to realize just how bad the glasses are, with things even up close being fuzzier than they should be like I’m not looking through the right part of the glass.

Thanks in advance!

Someone got employment with my identity

Hello,

At the end of May, I received a contractor badge in the mail. It had my name on it but someone else's photo. The contracting company, address, and phone number was listed on the badge, so let's just call that Company. I called the number on the back of the badge, which took me to the verification company/card issuer. They handle the background screening and credentials. They confirmed that this individual used my SSN, DOB, and other personal information in the application, though they had a different home address on file.

I have no idea how the card got mailed to ME, unless this person maybe stole my resume somehow? The company he is contracting for is in my field. A day later, I found out a 401k account was opened in my name in my financial institution, so I've taken steps to have that removed and they are currently working through verifying my identity and put a freeze on my account so no money can be removed.

Anyways I took all these steps already:

  • Filed an ID Theft report
  • Got an IRS pin and submitted an IRS Affidavit
  • Froze my credit at the 3 main bureaus, as well as LexisNexis and ChexSystems
  • Filed a police report to my local sheriff's office, even though the company resides in another state
  • Secured my financial institutions (MFA, new passwords, alerts where relevant)

My Experian credit report did not have any new loans in my name, at least so far. None of my accounts seem affected yet. In my FTC IdentityTheft.gov recovery plan, it says to contact the employer of this person to report it. They WILL NOT return my call. I left a voicemail but they never answer the phone. The badge issuer, who says Company is a contractor of theirs, said they spoke to their legal team and unfortunately can't give me any more information other than they have informed Company of the issue.

It seems sketchy to me that Company won't talk to me and I want to make sure everything is taken care of... Should I do anything else here? Should I contact my Sheriff's office again or try to contact the IRS?

Backsplash above stove

Hello! I, along with my partner, are new (and young) homeowners. I only say that to preface that whatever we do here needs to be on the affordable side haha. We recently switched out our microwave for a range hood and we LOVE it. It’s so much easier to cook.

However, as you can see, the tile didn’t go all the way up behind the microwave. We tried finding this backsplash tile, but it has a wavy 3D texture and we couldn’t match that.

How can we best remodel this in the cheapest possible way? I had a couple ideas:

  1. Could we strip that top

row of tile to remove holes, and replace it with a different band of tile going left to right from cabinet to cabinet corner? Something like thinner gray tiles as a little accent strip? Then repaint the wall between that and the hood, leaving that as drywall?

  1. Is it better to run the tile all the way up to the bottom of the hood? And if so, since we can’t find this tile, can we cut all the tile out just above the stove and use a new accent tile, keeping the white tile directly below the cabinets on either side? Or would that be awkward?

I am no designer haha so any direction on a fix would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: Please see my comment with sample tile compared to our tile! I appreciate your links but the issue is the texture which isn’t showing up well on photos so I promise it’s not as easy a match as on first glance haha. Thanks!

What quests should I finish before [SPOILER]?

I asked my boyfriend about any points of no return and he said other than near the very end, there will be an event that will make some quests more difficult.

I made him spoil it for me so I know that >!the Nehrimese invade Ark!<. I pushed him for the answer lol that was on me.

He hasn't played in a very long time though, so I wanted to see if there were any quests I should do before this event. I'm in nearing the end of the Golden Sickle quest and I tried starting the Rhalata quest in the Pits, but I keep getting wrecked lol. I just finished the Interlude so my main quest is telling me to go to Fogville, but I'm working on leveling up and random side quests and exploring right now. I'm level 20.

So any side quests I should prioritize right now before continuing the main quest? Anything else I should be aware of that has a "time limit" to it?

Under-leveled, need help

Hi! I’m currently level 18 and about to start the Into the Deep main questline. I looked it up and for this stage I should be level 25-30. I am a sinistrope/thaumaturge build and struggled with that in the early game. I’m just now starting to feel more comfortable with better spells.

I did all the side quests in and around Riverville and many in Ark, though some have proved to be too difficult for my level. I’d like to go to some areas and do some dungeons to level up, but I don’t want to waste my time with too low level areas or get killed in too high level ones lol.

What are the best places for me to explore right now before starting Into the Deep?

Thanks in advance!
