Part 2 of Things i found out being in food wholesale and F&B.
This is a 3 in 1. Grocery store special.
Pre-marinated meats sold at alot of grocery stores are made from meats that have passed the best by date or sell by date.
Sushi that contains raw seafood/sashimi is upcycled into a cooked item and sold the next day. (Dont know if still being done till today)
The flower crab you buy is probably from Pakistan and not local even tho they tell you its freshly caught.

I think the pre marinated meat most people will know by now that they actually use the meat that has reached its sell by date. When they add a marinade they can extend this shelf life by 3 days sometimes 4. Some grocery stores do use fresh meat but alot use the old meat. You can tell which use the old meat as it would be a few pieces marinated. If you buy this, youre eating meat that has been “renewed”. For some reason my friends like to buy it cause they said they dont know how to marinate meat themselves.
You know how some supermarkets sell sushi, sashimis, onigiri etc. Usually they put on a discount sticker to sell most of it off but sometimes you may see sashimi without the sticker. I was informed that stuff like sashimi and the salmon from salmon nigiri can be upcycled into onigiri or rolls and sold the next day hence why he doesn’t discount those items. They would take the raw salmon off the rice, throw the rice and cook the raw fish with the other trimmings they saved and add mayonnaise and then use it to make the filling for onigiri etc. This way instead of selling it discounted at cost, they now earn a little more by upcycling. Now, i learnt this in 2019 from the person that makes the sushi for the grocery store. . I do not know if this practice is still done today. That being said, this is actually safe to do and not really an issue but i think not many knew this.
Boring one but alot of my friends didnt know this and thought they were eating local freshly caught blue swimmer crab. Telling me flower crab sucks the flavour isnt good etc. If you ever buy flower crab from from supermarkets, you probably would think it was local right? As supermarkets like to market as fresh local seafood. But its probably defrosted flower crab from pakistan. We import so much of it. We have way more pakistani flower crab than local in storage. Local one mostly go to fresh markets. And these pakistani ones are really hit or miss, mostly miss. Buffets use them as they cost less than rm1 each. Usually no meat, meat started breaking down and mushy or smell like ammonia. Real fresh locally caught flower crab is really good but of course with a way bigger price tag.
