lost moldavite necklace

i always read the posts on here about people losing their moldavite thinking how on earth do you randomly lose it.

well, it finally happened to me.

got an a cruise yesterday, remember having it in line to check in/board the ship and then today i realized i wasn’t wearing it and i had no memory of taking it off. i checked all over my stateroom and there is no trace of it.

hoping it turns up in some random bag pocket somewhere but the woowoo side of me thinks its energy got me on this trip and it’s work was done

Wanted to share my little patch of wildflowers

In July of 2025 I redid my back patio area and left a little patch of dirt so i could plant some flowers. I bought a bag of California Wildflower Mix and basically just threw it over the dirt and hoped for the best. A few weeks later, there were so many little sprouts. I got a few blooms here and there and prayed they little guys would survive through the winter.

There’s beauties have been blooming over the last month and i couldn’t be happier 🥹🥰

Headstone mosaic was done by my 3x great grandfather for my 3x great grandmother, who was the first to be buried in the plot

The misery of the cruise Facebook group

I’ve been in cruise Facebook groups for past sailings, but since I left the platform about a year ago, I hadn't realized how chaotic they had become. I recently checked to see if my upcoming trip had one and was shocked to see nearly 400 people already active, so I went through the hassle of reactivating my account to join.

I regretted it within the hour.

It was a masterclass in why I left the platform. The mods were flooding the feed with AI-generated "slop" twice a day, and the community questions were… something else. I appreciate wanting an opinion on an experience you’re on the fence about from someone who has actually been there, but that’s not what I was seeing. Instead, it was an endless stream of questions like "What’s the weather going to be like in August?" or "How reliable is the start time for a tour I booked through a third party?"

It feels like people have forgotten how to use Google, YouTube, or even search through existing message boards for basic facts. It’s frustrating to see so many people who would rather wait for a stranger to spoon-feed them information than spend five minutes looking it up themselves.

To top it all off, the vibe was just plain uncomfortable. There were several older men leaving bizarre, creepy comments on posts. One guy actually suggested that solo travelers should wear specific colored beads so he could "easily identify who was traveling alone."

I lasted less than 24 hours. I left the group and nuked my Facebook account again. Is this just the standard experience for cruise groups now, or did I just hit the jackpot of dysfunction?

Thank you for listening to my rant :)

Getting to and around Danvers

Mom and I are planning a trip next spring to Salem and want to visit Danvers. I looked online and I could only find tours around Halloween. What’s the best way to get to and around Danvers? We’re not super excited about renting a car and don’t really want to rely on Uber/Lyft all day.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Chipping away at a brick wall - Can you help me verify these Hungarian family photos? Need help with identities and location 'Weston' (1933-1960s)

Hi everyone,

I’m returning to this community because the help I received on my last post was invaluable. I have been working on my grandfather’s genealogy—Gyula "Julius" Kovacs (born 1928, Pestszentlőrinc, Hungary)—and I have hit a point where I need outside perspectives to confirm some identifications and locations.

I have established a timeline for him from childhood through his post-war emigration, but I have a few portraits that are causing some confusion regarding the identities of the subjects and the location "Weston" mentioned in one of the inscriptions.

Below is the information I have gathered so far. Any insights on the fashion, the individuals, or potential locations would be greatly appreciated.

Photo Timeline & Notes

  • Photo 1 (Late 50s/60s Portrait): A woman signing as "Anci" to her younger brother.
    • I think this is his sister, Anna and his brother, Laci "László" Kovács but I am not sure.
  • Photo 2 (Childhood Portrait): c. 1933. Gyula at age 5 with his mother. Inscribed "From Mom, to Gyuszi. You were 5 years old."
    • I think this is his sister, Anna with him
  • Photo 3 (December 1957): December 13, 1957. Gyula at age 29 with an unidentified man. Inscribed "To my dear son" from his mother.
    • I know nothing about this photo other than my grandfather is on the left
  • Photo 4 (1955 Group Photo): May 1955. Group photo in "Weston." Inscribed "From Lajos and his family."
    • This group helped me identify the people in this photo as my grandfather's mother and stepfather as well as my grandfather's sister, brother in law, and their children
    • I couldn't find a 'Weston' in Hungary and have no record of his family being in Canada
  • Photo 2 (1948 Memento): June 18, 1948. His sister (Anna/Anci) and her husband, Lajos. Inscribed as a memento from his sister.

If anyone has any insight or opinions .. or better yet, knows the people in this photo. I GREATLY appreciate all of the help.

Brick wall: Maternal grandfather left Hungary in late 1940s. Hoping to connect with living relatives.

I’m currently researching my maternal grandfather’s family and have hit the classic 100-year privacy wall. I’m hoping someone here might recognize these names or these photos.

My grandfather, Gyula “Julius” Kovacs, was born in Pestszentlőrinc in 1928. He left Hungary in the late 1940s and unfortunately didn’t share much information about his family before he passed away when I was young.

His parents were:
- Father: Kálmán Kovács
- Mother: Juliánna Lupa

I believe I have located some records, but because he was born in 1928, I’m unable to access the more detailed birth/vital records due to the 100-year privacy restriction. I am trying to bridge the gap by finding living descendants or anyone who might have knowledge of this branch of the family.

I have these two photos that were passed down that have Hungarian writing on them. If these look familiar to anyone, or if you have any advice on navigating Hungarian records for this time period or location, I would be incredibly grateful for your input.

Thank you in advance for any help or leads you can provide.
