The first playoff is almost over. Upsets, wild moments and some insanely high level Age of Mythology has already been played. My personal favorite game so far was arguably one of the most clean Odin-Heimdal games I've ever seen by HUSKSUPPE.

There's still a long road to but one persons will be a little shorter than the others, who will it be?

The Sunday finalist of each playoff week earns their spot in Athens. Brackets are up on Liquipedia if you want to follow along.

The open-qualifiers are done. The field is set. Only the best reamin and this is the week that decides the first of five players who will be jetting off to Athens to compete for $10,000.

Here's how it plays out. The Round of 16 runs across the week, eight matches spread over three days. Saturday narrows it to the Round of 8. Then Sunday is the deciding day: the semis and finals. The winner of the finals will be in Greece, then we do it all again for 4 more weeks!

That's what makes Day 2 different. There's no "win and you advance, lose and you go again." This is it. Three matches, three winners, one chance. Lose today and the road to Greece ends here.

Twenty three years ago, the last major multi-player Age of Mythology LAN happened at World Cyber Games 2003. Since then, our community has done everything online. We've grinded ladder, we've run tournaments from our bedrooms, we've built something special out of a game a lot of people wrote off. But we've never had the moment so many of us have wanted: the best players in the world, in one room, settling it on a stage.

That changes this September in Athens. And the road there starts right now.

The Gameathlon: Athens LAN Open Qualifiers begin today at 1400GMT. This is the open bracket, which means anyone who signed up gets their shot. The top 8 players from today punch through to face Age of Mythology's best, all competing for one thing: a ticket to Greece and a seat at the biggest AoM LAN thrown since 2003.

The $1500 Throne of the Titans qualifier is happening today, starting at 1400 GMT. The qualifier is a single elimination format with two players going on to the main event in June. The prize pool has been put together by the generous support of community member Myll and is supported by Wolf Studios, Motaba, and fophuxake. It's great to see the AoM competitive scene continuing to grow.

This is a qualifier for a round-robin amongst the top 8 players in the age of mythology scene, so the stakes are real.

I've been competing in and hosting Age of Mythology tournaments for almost a decade. If you're in this community you probably have a soft spot for AoM even if it's not your main game, so I think you'll appreciate this.

For those that don't know I'm actually a Jazz Pianist and I have a friend of mine who plays in a band I'm in, not a gamer, never touched an RTS competitively in his life. Anyway we went on tour together and I caught him watching a StarCraft 2 cast on his phone at morning breakfast while no one else was around. Turns out he'd been watching SC2, AoE2, and my AoM content for years. When I asked him why, he said he doesn't follow for the intricate builds or the ridiculous mechanics, he follows the players. The rivalries, the upsets, the moment a match turns on a single decision.

I think about that a lot when it comes to Age of Mythology.

AoM never got its LAN moment. While AoE2 was throwing incredible events, AoM sat on the outside looking in. Recently Age of Mythology had a remaster and it's better than ever right now. It has a passionate competitive scene and genuinely spectacular viewing that has yet to have a massive LAN since the World Cyber Games 2003.

That changes this September.

Gameathlon is Greece's largest gaming convention, 20,000+ attendees, and they are hosting Age of Mythology: Retold's first ever major LAN at a literal Olympic Arena in Athens. $10,000 prize pool. Online qualifiers in July open to everyone. The community has already met the crowdfunding goal for the event which I think says everything about where this playerbase is at right now.

For those who haven't watched AoM competitively, it is a different viewing experience. God powers and myth units mean the game can turn in an instant. A well timed Tornado or a Titan hitting the field changes everything in a way that even someone with zero game knowledge can feel.

I grew up watching other games get their moment and wondering if ours would ever come. A small town country boy from Australia is flying to Athens in September to host it. I think that says it all.

For those who don't know me. I've been playing Age of Mythology since as long as I can remember. I got into competitive Age of Mythology when I was 14 and have never looked back since. I went from tournament competitor, to top finisher to tournament host and from the outside looking at other titles like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends ect. and seeing the crazy LANs they would throw I was always like... one day, one day AoM will get put in the spotlight.

Well, wait no longer. I've already put out an announcement video where you can see what the event is all about but let me just tell you a few things here.

For those unfamiliar with Gameathlon. It is Greece's largest gaming convention. We're talking 20,000+ attendees over a weekend, LAN party setups, live tournaments, cosplay and much more. It's been running for years and it is a proper event. Not just some small local thing.

This year it is running from September 11-13 at a literal Olympic Arena in Athens. The Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena to be specific. The qualifiers will also be hosted online on my twitch channel starting in Late June/Early July

The reason I'm excited beyond belief is because Age of Mythology made a name for itself partly because of the Greek mythology, because of the connection to the rich history that Greece has and because it made a generation know about things like the Trojan war, Achilles, Odysses and many other ancient war heroes.

If you're in Europe or thinking about a trip to Athens in September, check in, this is real. I'll be there, Moose will be there and the highest profile Age of Mythology competitors will be there as well.
