thoughts on my indie show character designs?
hey! i've been working on an indie animated show called "MAKYs: Beyond Awesome!" for a while and wanted to get some opinions on the character designs.
the show's about 4 teenagers who randomly get superpowers and think they're about to live out their comic book/video game superhero fantasy... until they realize the powers are connected to something WAY bigger than "lol we're superheroes now." they get dragged into a conflict that's completely beyond them and end up becoming the main targets without even knowing why.
for the art style i took inspiration from a ton of stuff i grew up with: Panty & Stocking, Ben 10: Omniverse, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Teen Titans, Back to the Future, early 2010s Cartoon Network action shows, classic shonen anime with that over-the-top energy like Beyblade: Metal Fusion and Bakusō Kyōdai Let's & Go!!, and even old internet animation like Eddsworld, asdfmovie, Flash animations, Newgrounds, and the general chaotic energy of the late 2000s/early 2010s internet. i wasn't trying to copy any of them, just combine everything that inspired me into something that feels like its own identity.
another thing i wanted to do is make every main character a tribute to a different part of pop culture. each of them has design choices and little references inspired by real pop culture, whether it's cartoons, games, music, internet culture, or other things i grew up with. i like hiding those little nods throughout the designs.
my dream is basically to make a show that feels like a modern love letter to that era: expressive characters, lots of comedy, pop-punk energy, sci-fi, and a group of teenage friends getting way in over their heads.
i'm mostly looking for feedback on the designs themselves.
do they feel memorable? do they fit today's indie animation scene? do they make you curious about the characters?
btw, just so you know who's who:
purple = Mazen
orange = Anmar
red = Kenan
green = Yaman
i'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts!
