Experiences with car theft and Kia

Hey,

I know others here have had their car stolen. And many more people here are taking additional steps to make it harder to steal — this is absolutely a good idea.

I've written up a personal story, but also used a freedom of information request to the UK's DVLA (the government department in charge of vehicle licensing) to get statistics on the level of theft by each car brand for the last ten years.

Upshot:
- Many more Kia's are being stolen now than ten years ago.
- Other brands have significantly improved their theft rate.
- Kia needs to secure their cars better and make it easier for owners to track a car when it has been stolen.
- Kia US appears to be much much better at helping owners of stolen cars than Kia UK.

fyi new unlocked X4, ordered Apr27 from official store

I have a new X4. It was ordered April 27 from the Xteink website. The unit arrived unlocked and did not need the workaround to flash it with CrossPoint.

The packaging was a bit different to images I have seen online. It came in a small black box, rather than brown cardboard.

So, it looks like unlocked units are still available.

Hope this info helps others.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to understand more about car thefts that used wireless hacks, such as the "gameboy" method — what happened, how the car manufacturer helped with recovery, outcome, etc.

Background — As I understand it, the gameboy approach is apparently a tool to gain access to a car wirelessly and steal it without any access to the car keys, i.e. the car keys may be somewhere completely else, or they may be in a pouch that blocks all wireless signals and so prevents signal relay thefts.

Please reply to this thread if your car has been stolen. If you prefer to message me privately with the information, that would be useful too.

Please note:

- Car brand.
- Car model.
- Approx date of theft.
- Country.
- Method of theft, if known.
- What help the car's manufacturer provided to help to recover the vehicle.
- Whether the car was eventually recovered, or what happened to the car.

I've already collected statistics on how different car brands/manufacturers compare on the rate of thefts in the UK — can share that in a couple of weeks. It's interesting!

Also, if anyone has information about updates from manufacturers that improve security and make a car more resistant to this type of theft, this would also be very useful too. Other than here, you can also reach me on Signal privately: ianfogg.42

thanks!
Ian

Does anyone know when the 2027 model year version of the Elroq will be available to order in the UK? Is there often a lag between a new Skoda model year being available in Europe vs the UK, if so how long is it typically?

I spoke with two people at a UK dealer at the weekend and both had no knowledge of the 2027 version.

I can see it is officially on sale in Germany, see: https://www.skoda-media.de/press/detail/4595/

But there is no similar release that I can see on the UK Skoda site.
