More KWARC MIDI generation: I finished the tracker interfaces!

Hi all, many thanks for the community support on my last post! I'll make this the final update for a while as I don't want to spam.

I've recently finished designing some user interface stuff (still plenty of work left to do, but it's now polishing rather than designing).

This is a more interesting demo than the last one I showed. All MIDI is being produced by KWARC, all sound is being generated by Ableton Live and various plugins. You can see the various tracker interfaces - the standard "tracker" generator with non-linear playheads and the esoteric "particle" generator that samples notes based on numerical simulations of subatomic particles.

Under the hood, there's automatic transcription of pattern sequences across a few different key signatures and I show off some pattern randomisation for the drums at the end.

This is being designed with an embedded Alpine Linux-based platform in mind with physical and touchscreen controls with live performance and improvisation in mind. I'm having fun using KWARC in my hardware synth setup to quickly produce MIDI content with complex musical qualities, which lets me have fun tweaking knobs and playing with the mixer.

Happy to discuss and answer questions!

Does it still say IS 4 GAYS on the salvation army building?

Title. I remember seeing that graffiti in 2009 when it was brand new. It was washed off within a week but the big white letters were always clearly visible for well over a decade. Still there?

Do not rent from Haus unless your other option is sleeping on the streets

Worst letting agency I've ever had the displeasure of working with. They will scam you for some kind of sick sexual thrill I presume, that's how passionately and robustly I've been fucked by them over the past 2 years.

Moved in 2 weeks late because they didn't get the paperwork sorted for us? Yep!

Moved into an unclean flat? Yep! Untouched from when we viewed it.

Furnished flat? Yep! Furnishings included 3 beds (2 broken), an office chair with the backrest snapped off and a rusty bathroom cabinet absolutely brimming with tetanus.

Maintainence? Yep - the tetanus cabinet was removed and replaced with... Nothing. 22 months or so without a bathroom mirror!

Fire escapes? You can stumble down the crumbling concrete steps or take a 3 story plummet out of a window labelled "fire escape" (not joking)

Getting bored? Watch the black mold grow and thrive in real time across the walls! Listen to the chips of paint flaking off the ceiling rustle in the breeze that's always coming from somewhere.

Now they are kindly holding on to our deposits because we've simply been too lazy to ask for them back personally. It's true that in 12 years of renting I've always had my deposit returned to me automatically, but Haus will always make sure to frustrate and irritate you at every opportunity possible.

If there's anybody even considering going with this absolute clown show of a company consider burning your money instead, you will be warmer.

Reaper saves the day, low latency beast

I've recently set up my new studio with a hybrid analog/DAW mixing system. I can apply prefader FX in my DAW, which is then sent to the analog desk for additional EQ and levelling. The individual postfader signals are all then sent back into the DAW where they go through a basic mastering chain. It's a bit weird and convoluted, but for my purposes this gives me all the benefits of using my analog desk with the power of DAW processing.

Obviously latency is an issue here. I was using Ableton Live with my tascam 16x08 interface and got the latency down to 6.33 ms. Pretty good, but definitely noticeable, and some features like amp simulation in the DAW with monitoring became unfeasible.

I thought I'd try Reaper as a last ditch effort and... Latency is sub 2ms, with pretty much the same FX/amp simulation/mastering chain set up in both DAWs. I'm actually floored at how significant the difference is.

Live definitely has more capability when it comes to in-the-DAW performance out of the box, but I'm not using any of that. Plus, Reaper handles program change messages, which I am using. Really impressed in the hour I've used it so far!

6ms latency using Tascam 16x08

I recently picked up a 16x08 - great interface, solid price.

One warning though, it's still using USB 2.0 and that's your only way of connecting to a computer. There's about 4ms input latency (disabling inputs in Ableton Live preferences doesn't change anything) and 2ms output latency. I've not looked too deeply into hardware monitoring as I'm using a mixing desk for that, but I don't think the 16x08 has it.

If anybody has any tips on reducing this latency I'd be happy to hear them, but I've more or less accepted that this is bottlenecked by the data transfer rate.

Using an M5 macbook pro and a blank Live project to test. Would still recommend the interface if you've got a lot of inputs but you'll need to find some kind of monitoring solution for recording into the device
