Could my cat have had her kidneys fail due to stress?

Our 12 year spayed female cat was diagnosed with stage 1ish (possibly early stage 2) CKD in May of this year. Her creatinine was 173 umol/L. We started her on renal support wet food and she was doing well.

About five days ago, she started throwing up a few times and barely eating. We took her in two nights ago and her creatinine was 1080 umol/L and BUN was >49.98 umol/L. The vets were shocked and said she was in late-stage kidney failure. Back in May, her creatinine was only 175 umol/L.

The plan was to keep her hospitalized with IV fluids and daily blood work. We were hoping she would stabilize and we could take her home with daily SubQ fluids.

24 hours later, they performed blood work again and said the creatinine was still increasing and her potassium kept increasing as well, meaning the kidneys could not filter it out. They were worried about her heart with the potassium increasing. However, she did eat a couple bites and was still peeing. They told me she is suffering and don’t believe she will get better. We decided about 36 hours into her hospitalization to put her to sleep.

BACKSTORY:

This all started last Friday, about a week ago. My sister brought over two 8 month old cats for about 5 hours for a ”play date”. My cat has met these two cats twice before. They would stress her out whenever they’d get too close and she would hiss at them. She spent most of those five hours on her cat tree. After they left, she ate a late dinner of wet food around 11 at night. Sometime in the early morning, she threw up all the food. Every since throwing up, she kept losing her appetite more and more until her eventual hospitalization.

Could this five hour visit have been the trigger for her kidneys to fail? Maybe if she didn’t drink that day from stress due to the kittens? I just don’t get how this happened and the vets have no idea. Her blood work and urinalysis did not show any signs of infection.

Any advice is appreciated.

Could my cat have downhill so fast due to being stressed around other cats?

I would really appreciate honest advice, not just to try to make me feel better.

Should we have kept my cat with kidney disease hospitalized for longer to decrease creatinine?

Our 12 year spayed female cat was diagnosed with stage 1ish (possibly early stage 2) CKD in May of this year. Her creatinine was 173 umol/L. We started her on renal support wet food and she was doing well.

Should we have kept her hospitalized with IVs for another day or two to see if her levels decreased? I just don’t understand how it happened so fast.

Worried we didn’t give her enough of a chance and vets were too pushy

I would really appreciate honest advice, not just to try to make me feel better.

12 year old cat suddenly went from beginning stage 2 to late stage 4 in two months. Is this normal?

The first is her blood work from early May and the second is today. She wasn’t eating for two days and appeared nauseous, brought her to emergency and vet said her blood work is terrible and she’s likely in end stage level 4 :( she was doing so well and we switch her to renal support wet food. Can this progress so quickly? She also had a urinalysis done which shows no infection.

LR 4 sensors often stay red after cat leaves

So I just got two LR4s yesterday and some of the cats have started using them. They sometimes work but often, when the cats leaves the litter after they are done, the light stays red and I have to go hit reset and then cycle manually. Does anyone know what this could be with such new boxes?

is it better to buy a used LR4 for $800 or new bundle for $1200?

so I’m in Canada and these are the prices in CAD.

Someone is selling a used LR4 purchased in November with the three year extended warranty.

I’ve also seen Costco online sells the LR4 bundle with all the accessories (stairs etc) for $1200 (before tax though).

I’m considering Costco because of their good return policy. If my cats refuse to use it and it’s been more than 90 days, I could still return it easily.

What do you guys think? It would be a lot better financially for me to save the $500 (bc of taxes) but worried about having no return policy.

did anyone have bad side effects decreasing their dose?

I’ve decreased from 15 mg to 10 mg about a week ago and feel like crap. I’m super exhausted, have the worst headaches, and have no desire to do anything. Is this just me or is it likely the dose decrease? I wasn’t feeling great before either but this seems worse. I was on 15 mg for three years.

Considering switching from office job to nursing, looking for advice

So I’m 27 and I’ve been working a corporate office job for around 7 months, graduated with a business degree a couple years ago (started school late).

I work as a “business analyst” but it’s most just repetitive administrative work as I’m early in my career. The work is easy but I sometimes get less than an hour of work a day and feel like I’m going to go crazy sitting in the office pretending to look busy. I’m grateful to have a job in this economy but I spend every weekend dreading the next week, I just hate hate hate being boring and feel so restless sitting there all day. I thought I would enjoy being paid to do nothing but I feel so useless and down all the time. I enjoy helping people and think I would like nursing but I know it’s really hard to tell until you actually become a nurse.

I’ve been considering nursing for the past three years or so but wanted to try my business degree first. I know I’ve only started my career but I feel like I’m running out of time to make the switch. I did get into nursing school but I got my job offer right after that so I decided to cancel and apply again after giving this a try.

I’m thinking of aiming to go to school in the fall of 2027 if I decided to do nursing but I just don’t know what to do. I’m scared I’m not giving my career much of a chance to actually try it out but I don’t want to go back to school in my mid 30’s. I know it’s possible but it’s not practical for me.

I also know the province is in a terrible hiring situation but I’m hoping but the time I graduate it will be better and if not, I am willing to relocate provinces.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice is appreciated!

Is it hard to a new grad RN or RPN to find a job in Ottawa?

I keep hearing the GTA is especially bad but what about Ottawa? Particularly hospital jobs.

would you pay $250 for a used LR 3 connect?

I’ve never used one before, the seller said it’s a few years old and they’ve replaced parts so I’m a bit worried but is it worth a try?
