Daggerfall unity mod WIP flintlock pistols some info on how im making it

so want to see what the it in game here vid link https://youtu.be/ibptF545p8s?si=AEKCJTsAqH9ORB0F

But this post is more about how I made — or am still making — this mod, so let’s start.

First, I had to look for a good toy flintlock pistol. There were some good ones, including one that was around $30, but I didn’t need anything that expensive. I found a $2 one instead.

Next, I had to figure out how I was going to animate it. I put the toy in front of a green screen and took about 168 images of it to get the frames I needed. I then edited the images and prepared them for animation.

Next, I found a good royalty-free 3D model, since the toy’s hammer doesn’t cock or move.

I used Photoshop to cut out the part I needed from the 3D model and then used Krita to make it look right with the toy.

Then I used Aseprite to color-index everything so I could use Daggerfall’s original color palette.

I also used GIMP to remove the background from the toy flintlock pistol and make the muzzle flash and fire effects for both the toy and the 3D model.

Next, I installed Unity, got the correct version, and downloaded the source code from GitHub.

Then came the fun part: testing the code, building the mod, looking at what broke, and trying to figure out how everything works. I also used the Daggerfall Unity modding wiki to get a basic understanding of what I needed to do.

After that, I got Daggerfall Imaging 2, which I used to work on the weapon sprites. I resized the pistol to the right resolution and sprite size and tried to get the pixel look and feel to fit Daggerfall Unity’s art style as best as I could.

And that’s basically how I got from a $2 toy flintlock pistol to something that can actually be used in Daggerfall Unity.

rn i still have no idea how daggerfall unity modding works I’m just figuring it out as I go.

Daggerfall unity mod WIP flintlock pistols test

so this what i've been busy with for some time now.

i was trying to plan, build, test, play, and animate this also here bits from my posts on twitter.

no real oder

part 3 working on another project in unity.

well now i can say what the project is it a mod for daggerfall unity here the vid. just testing it in game the code not good but i like it in game

part 1

but here anim of what im doing. this toy Flintlock Pistol stop motion and with a 3d model part from another person.

used the flint and the hammer since the toy did not have a moveable hammer or flint

part 2.

Author djonvincent's Flintlock Pistol 3d model it was animated. but there where no effects and the animation was cut short so i made a bit of new stuff and edited the anims.

so here the preview of what i got.

also thanks to bethesda guns are both technical lore friendly and technical not lore friendly.

Since this exists:

https://creations.bethesda.net/en/skyrim/details/5463/Arquebus

also this made with aseprite to color index it to use daggerfall original color palette

and gimp to remove the toy flintlock pistol background and to make the muzzle flash and fire effects for both the toy and the 3d model rendered as pngs

Why do the Gunners seem to get so little mod content compared to other Fallout 4 factions?

Why do the Gunners seem to get so little mod content compared to other Fallout 4 factions? Or why are they usually just used as enemies for new factions?

now i know there mods that do focus a bit on the gunners like

Gunners Overhaul - Initially Friendly Gunners
(you could join them but there not really any quests and it mostly just makes them friendly with not much else)

Sim Settlements Conqueror Faction Pack - Gunners
(no quests)

Gunners Take Over the Commonwealth
(just more gunners, not really quests or joining them)

Minutemen vs Gunners (Preview)
(more about fighting)

Sim Settlements 2 had the Gunners as the enemy

same with Outcasts and Remnants

now the gunners are not as generic as some other factions in fallout standards, they are a bit generic, but there is lore around them. They did take out the Minutemen at Quincy and they do look and feel different from Raiders.

so why is there so little content for these guys?

even just one quest, or being able to join them and having a small story with them could be fun.

they don't have to be like America Rising 2 - Legacy of the Enclave, where you can use the faction to beat the main game, although that would be really cool to have.

but another thing is there are very few lore mods for them. There are lots of mods to make them look less generic, but I don't think the Gunners really need a makeover.

they need a story.

have some quests where you work with them or join them, sort of like in Fallout 3 with Reilly's Rangers. They didn't help with the main quest, but it was still a nice side quest and made them feel like an actual group in the world.

or like the Kings in Fallout: New Vegas.

the gunners could be pure evil, or they could be something more than just another Raider reskin to shoot at.

they could be neutral.

maybe you could work for them without having to agree with everything they do.

maybe you could join them and eventually work your way up through their ranks.

and honestly, it would be really nice to have a mod where you could use the Gunners to beat the main quest.

not saying it needs to be some massive project, but having a proper Gunner questline and then eventually being able to choose them as your faction for the main game would be really cool.

what do you guys think?

why do you think there are so few mods that actually develop the Gunners as a faction?

and would it be cool to use them to beat the main game quest?

Working on/testing an ASCII art dungeon crawler

Early prototype of an ASCII dungeon crawler. This is just a visual test using animated frames compiled into a video to see how the style reads in motion.

I’m planning to build it properly in Python later—right now it’s just experimenting with the look and feel. ASCII art is just fun to work with.
