Zesto

Zesto

I’m more of a Bernie’s guy myself but like to stop in at Zesto from time to time, especially when I’m with my kid and we want to get a dipped cone. Interesting history of Zesto…it started as a soft-serve place in the 40s, expanded nationally rapidly, and in the mid-50s the corporation that was operating the franchising just pulled the plug and signed a deal with McDonalds to supply their milkshake machines. They fell off the map but some survived and they operate independently now. They just license the name but have nothing else to do with one another. They’re in South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, South Dakotan, and Nebraska, maybe more. I think the Midwest ones are more just dairy bar windows but the South Carolina ones evolved into a fried chicken and burger focus.

Got a trailer quote

Howdy. I met a guy some years back who welded me a utility trailer for about $700-800 if I recall. It was pretty lightweight, no frills, 6x8 frame without decking or anything. This was late 2019-early 2020. It’s nice and has held up well. I need another trailer and emailed him, asked for a quote for something a bit bigger (6.5 x 8) and a bit beefier with 2 additional crossmembers. I was a surprised by the quote. He sent me back the following.

3" channel frame with 6000 lbs break axle and all trailer material $ 2190.00 plus 700. Sandblasted and painted. Labor is $2400.00

5" channel frame with 6000lbs break axle and all trailer material $2415.00 plus 700 to sandblast and paint. Labor is $2400.00

Both trailers would have: Light guard, Fenders with backs , Black rim, 2 tires 6-5.5, Swivel Jack, A frame coupler 2", Tail lights 2, Side lights 2.

I think the guy is highly regarded in the area, and I obviously want to pay somebody their worth for quality work that needs to be done well for safety’s sake. I was just surprised is all. Have prices really gone up this much? Is it the steel prices primarily? Am I getting an “I don’t want the job” quote or is this the going rate? I can buy a utility trailer that size for a good bit less but figured I’d support a good guy and, and I also don’t need any decking, ramp, side rails, etc, so it seemed like it’d be good to get a custom frame without the extra stuff.

I’m in the Carolinas.

Mama requested burgers

Really love that my wife loves burgers as much as I love making them. She requested smashburgers and fries for dinner. Did it up right: home ground mix of sirloin, chuck, bacon, and rib roast trimmings I had in the freezer. Griddled brioche buns, murica cheese, burger sauce, onions, and pickles. Fries done in the outdoor fryer next to the blackstone griddle. IPAs from Burial. Happy Mother’s Day.
