* Best Buy *

When I was about 11 or 12, around 1964, I had an older friend that collected old cards, which was really interesting to me. He was a fan of Eddie Mathews and had lots of his cards.

He also had other unique cards, two of which I wanted badly. One was a Cobb T206, Bat Off Shoulder. The other a Cobb T205. I could only afford one. He wanted 50 cents for the T206 and 75 cents for the T205. I chose the former.

It was a tough call, because I could have bought 10 packs of cards with the same money. At any rate, I gleefully paid, took it home and put it in a plastic holder, which is where it remained until last year.

Unfortunately, I can recall that, much later, I could have purchased a nice Cobb T3 Turkey Red for about $500...not from him, just in general. Hindsight is a savvy investor.

Childhood Collection

I started collecting around 1959 and quit after I turned 15 in 1968. Fortunately, I kept all of those cards and last year submitted a lot of cards for grading. During that time frame, I also acquired some older cards, which really fascinated me as a kid. Most of these were from trading, but a few were from a catalog...a story for a different post.

I finally got around to putting a few on the wall. All of these from 1952 - 1968 were either purchased in 5 cent packs (of 5 cards) or traded using those cards. The ones in the photo starting with the 1941 Play Ball Klein were acquired later in time, as I collected off and on over the years.

Vintage Chamberlain, etc. Photo

Just sharing a favorite of mine...this Type 1 original news photo of Wilt Chamberlain playing like he is going to hit Muhammad Ali. This was taken in 1992 at the inaugural Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame induction at which these 4 legends (including Bob Cousy and Gordy Howe) were honored.

Wilt, in fact, had challenged Ali to fight on several occasions in Ali's prime while he was on sabbatical from boxing and, in 1971, it almost happened. Fortunately, it did not; however, Chamberlain continued to tease Ali over the years, who often responded with "He crazy...", as he appears to do in this photograph.

Vintage Baseball Photos

NFS, just posting. I hope this is correct to post this here...I couldn't find anywhere specifically on topic.

After not actively collection for over 40 years, I started back up last year in my semi-retirement. At first, I started sorting and submitting cards for grading. Naturally, I progressed to buying...strictly vintage. While doing so, I ran across a related collectible...old photos of sports stars...and found them intriguing and worthy of purchase. Another bad habit. :)

This Type I original news service photo of the trio of Cobb-Speaker-Collins, 3 of the greatest players of all time, was taken at Spring Training 1928. All were in the twilight of their legendary careers. Speaker had just signed, Cobb was in year 2 with the Athletics and Collins returned for the culmination of his historic contribution to Philadelphia, which included 5 World Series titles.

In addition, the team also included Mickey Cochran, Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons. They came very close to winning another pennant, losing to the Yankees by 2 1/2 games.

I sent this card to SGC and, as you can see, it came back Authentic, "minimum size not met". As a matter of fact, the card is all original, not messed with, and is the EXACT dimensions that it is supposed to be. No explanation, of course. I have had a number of other vintage cards come back with this designation, but this one, in particular, really irked me. I assume others have had a similar experience?
