You're allowed to take up space!

It was pointed out to me today that every time I share something, I have some preamble first about how the thing I'm sharing is dumb, or it doesn't matter, or that I'm embarrassed to share it. It's like I always feel the need to apologize for what I'm saying and for myself.

A couple of years ago I was working at a restaurant, and I kept getting in the way of one of my coworkers no matter where I stood. I kept apologizing, and he told me 'stop apologizing, your allowed to take up space.' And that was the first time anyone had ever told me that.

As a child I felt things very intensely. I didn't know it until recently, but I have ADHD (surprise!). And I am beginning to realize how my struggles were at least in part because of how my brain works. My feelings would be dismissed and I was punished for them. I was humiliated over and over again for years just for... being me. I quickly learned that it's easier to never show how you're feeling. Never ask for help, never share anything, never get in the way, never rock the boat. As a dude, this was even more true. I wasn't allowed to cry, or be too emotional, or ask for help. So i just bottled it all up. Which is a really shit strategy, let me tell ya...

Now in my mid-late 20s, I'm finally starting to work through this. It feels dumb to say, or it doesn't really matter, or I'm embarrassed to say it (still working on that one).... but it's only just now sinking in. I'm allowed to take space. I'm allowed to ask for things, to need things, to have emotion, and to express it.

I know this absolutely applies to the ladies here as well, but I also want to say to the boys: you aren't weak for having emotion, or being empathetic, or needing help. You're allowed to have problems too. You're allowed to cry. You're allowed to care about things. You're allowed to take up space.

When I go to work it feels like a separate 'me' than the me when I'm not at home. Is this masking?

It's like this the most when I go to work, but it can be like that if I go to social events and stuff as well. Someone once told me that I was experiencing dissociation, but I'm not sure that that's true. Instead, I think of it as a part of masking.

Because I am wearing a mask all day, I literally feel like I'm a different person. I consciously reject thoughts in my head that I can't deal with while at work. Stuff about my personal life, or anything self-reflective.. At work, I feel more like a machine than I do myself. I still am me, but it feels so surface level.

And then when I leave work, I have this period where my brain is adjusting, and I can drop the mask. And then I have all these thoughts in my head that I couldn't deal with earlier in the day, all at once. And those thoughts feel like the 'real' me, because they relate to the things that I want to do and be and think about rather than the stuff I have to think about at work.

It's like the different aspects of my life are siloed off from each other to some extent. It's challenging because I'm working so hard to work on myself. I'm in therapy, I started meds a couple of months ago, I'm trying to get back to the gym, I'm trying to 'figure myself out'. But I feel like I lose 8-10 hours a day, which are my best hours because that's when I'm medicated, and then I come home.... and I'm just exhausted from work and from wearing this mask.

And then I feel like shit about it because I'm too exhausted to do anything as the 'real me'. So I start to feel like I'm losing parts of myself slowly over time. At this point I feel like i don't even really know who I am. I don't even trust myself anymore. I feel like an unreliable narrator.

Is it right to think about this as a sort of side-effect of masking? Is this similar at all to how some of you experience it? Does your life feel siloed or split like this?

Is electability a self-fulfilling prophecy, or is it a pragmatic way to evaluate candidates?

Or both I guess, if that tickles your fancy.

My intent is to understand how you think about electability; this post is not meant to specifically attack your personal views on electoral politics. I am genuinely asking you to step up on a soap box and tell me what you think so that I can better understand your perspective.

Why does my non-stackable item copper golem filter chest take out 2 items when it gets filled?

Here’s a video of the problem.

Im trying to use copper golems for my storage system and im setting up filter chests to categorize my items into some storage silos. It’s a system that will work for how i like to store my shit. The images are from my creative test world but im doing this in survival.

Ive got the stackable items filters working properly, now i just cant get the unstackable filter chest to do what i want. I want the hopper to empty 1 item when the chest gets filled (by a copper golem). All the items in the chest would be unstackable items like tools.

Instead, it’s pulling out 2 items before it locks the hopper again. So then it would take 2 items for it to fill, unlock the hopper, and then pull the two items into the final storage chest. Which is not ideal because then i could end up with items getting stuck in the filter chest if i deposit an odd number of tools into the copper golem system.

Im not very good at redstone and this is the first item sorter ive ever built, so im stumped.

This is the guide im following. Im on the up to date bedrock version on ps5.

My boss sent me an invite friday afternoon for a meeting this week to discuss performance

I’m generally a good worker, but i’ve kind of burnt out at work over the course of the last year, for reasons related to work, personal life, and of course my not-so-great mental health. I’ve “gotten in trouble” for being on my phone too much at work. Which is true, i’ve been having a really hard time focusing.

ive been working to improve it. I started therapy again, i got medicated again, and im trying to develop better habits.

But i still have struggles, and sometimes i have bad days. Im also feeling a bit overworked, as i have taken on some additional management responsibilities at work (at the request of my boss) without much of a reduction in workload for my other responsibilities.

I also got quite burnt out a few months ago due to a specific challenging client, which is ongoing still, but to a lesser extent at least. And i havent had much of a break since.

It’s been a transition with the new responsibilities. My productivity hasnt been great. And im struggling to start tasks and stay focused throughout the day. On my worst days i can spend hours distracted, so it’s a real problem for me.

But he fucking scheduled the meeting on friday afternoon, without any additional details or information. And i have to wait to Wednesday because im in meetings all day tomorrow and tuesday. And ive been stewing over it all weekend. Im trying so hard to do everything right but im not perfect, but i also cant just use this all as an excuse in professional life.

I dont know… how do you handle this kind of situation? Any words of wisdom to stop me catastrophizing?

Will Platner's campaign have a lasting effect on democratic electoral politics?

Post-john, i think a lot of people were obviously wary of getting fetterman-ed, but it was just one data point. Now with Platner being... what he is (a likely rapist, or at least a sex pest)... I'm wondering what impact you think Platner's campaign will have on democratic electoral politics going forward.

I'm not really asking about his campaign specifically (though feel free to discuss it), but moreso what impact his campaign will have on democratic campaigns in the future.

Does this change the level of scandal that democrats will be willing to accept for any given candidate?

Will we see better candidate vetting going forward? Or is this a risk that will always exist?

Will we see more infighting among democratic candidates?

Will platner's campaign be seen as a reflection of the party? of progressivism/dsa candidates? of populist candidates overall? Or will the fallout stay contained to maine and platner himself?

Let's all avoid rule 5. I'm asking what you think will happen, not why you think the other half of the democratic party is tearing us apart.

Would love to see more interesting stickers like this holographic sticker.

Not a fan of limited quantities, but if that’s what we’re doing, at least make the stickers worth it.

The infantilization of “casual” players

So at this point, if you’ve spent more than 5 seconds on this sub recently, you’re probably aware of the casual/sweat discourse playing out.

I’ll caveat this post by saying that i think the casual/sweat distinction is fucking dumb, those terms are way too broad and everyone seems to use them differently. And people call themselves “casual” or “sweat” or “hardcore” or “veteran” like it’s a badge of honor that somehow makes their opinion more valid or the most important somehow. It also implies that casuals/sweats are inherently at odds with one another when that could not be further from the truth. Everyone can enjoy the game, and play it in their own way, there is plenty of marathon to go around.

Anyway.

Something im noticing is the term “casual” being used to mean “bad” rather than meaning “person who doesnt no life the game”.

So if we’re going to have this discussion about marathon on the grounds of sweats/casual, the conversation stops being about respecting player time and ensuring that everyone can have fun in marathon, and instead becomes about difficulty.

Like im sorry, but “casual” does not mean “big baby who can barely read, cant understand basic concepts, and dies when a slightly better player farts in their general direction. And then quits forever.”

You can be a sweaty try hard who fucking sucks at the game, and you can be a casual gamer who just fucking rips through opponents for the 2 hours a week you get to play.

Do you want the game to be easy, or do you want it to respect your time? Do you want it to be easy, or do you want it to be rewarding to play whether you have 2 hours every week or 20 hours every week?

This infantilization of players who are not the best of the bear players is imo weird and counterproductive, and it muddies the waters for discussions about the game and its future.

How would you characterize the American mythos?

Mythos generally refers to the foundational stories, beliefs, and values, that characterize a group. It is essentially the mythology of a culture that underpins that culture’s identity.

How would you describe the foundational stories, beliefs, and values of American culture?

What place does climate policy have in Democratic electoral strategy going forward?

So, i came across this article. It essentially argues that the general consensus that climate change is a losing issue for democrats is reductive and not necessarily true. A few excerpts that give the gist of the article:

>The basis for thinking that Democrats should avoid the subject comes from polls asking voters about their top priorities: Climate change ranks number 24 out of 25 when Americans are asked which issues will be very important to their vote, according to data from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication last year. That’s mainly because other concerns have risen in importance, with liberal Democrats more concerned about things like protecting democracy, government corruption, and the treatment of immigrants than before the 2024 election. It’s a logical leap, however, to assume that talking about climate change is a political liability simply because voters don’t name it as one of their top issues.

>Some commentators argue that you can achieve climate action just by getting Democrats elected, regardless of whether they’re bringing it up. But deemphasizing climate change as part of their political platform could have long-term consequences: Without real discussion of it, you lose momentum for action and send a signal that it’s not important. “You actually need to have conversation and attention to an issue to slowly build the coalition and policy work necessary to address it,” Mildenberger said.

>In effect, Democrats are ceding rhetorical ground to their opponents, he argues, even as polling shows that Trump’s agenda — blocking the construction of wind farms, scrubbing public information about global warming from government websites, and pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement — is broadly unpopular. “All of this is, frankly, doing the service of the fossil fuel industry, ultimately, because it’s helping climate delay,” Mildenberger said.

For me, climate change is easily in my top 3 issues, and i’ve been worried for years now about the lack of focus on climate in democratic politics.

In 2024, climate was barely even a part of the election, and in the recent midterms, i honestly havent heard a single mention of climate change from a single candidate. That’s not to say they dont talk about it, but if i, a relatively plugged-in person, havent heard it, then im pretty sure most regular people havent either.

Im curious what you all think. Do you agree with the argument of the article? Is climate change a political liability or a a boon? Should climate policy be a part of democratic messaging in upcoming elections? Regardless of the politics of it all, do you think the democrats focus enough on climate issues?

Is it a bad idea to take my first ever dose of adderall for the first time on a work day?

So I was just prescribed generic adderall 10 mg xr. Huzzah!

For context, I work an office job doing CAD design, and I have a client meeting tomorrow. I'm picking up my meds tonight from the pharmacy, and I'm considering taking them for the first time tomorrow morning, or waiting until Saturday morning to try them on a day off. It feels like the smart move is to wait til saturday, but at the same time... god i just want to feel better finally. 27yrs of raw dogging this shit is enough for me lol.

Is it a bad idea to take it for the first time on a work day? In case you get any bad side effects or anything on it? What were your experiences taking it for the first time, at work and on days off?

I've entered a hell of my own creation at work. How do I fix it?

I've been working for a small company for about three years, in a product development role. . I'm good at my job (when I'm able to actually focus), and I'm starting medication sometime in the next week or so, and I'm hoping that it'll help me focus better at work. But that's not the problem today.

Recently, my boss has asked me to take on some additional responsibilities. Previously it's been my boss and his wife who hand phone calls, emails, quote requests, client intake- etc- and they asked me to help them with some of that work. And I said yes, because of course I did.

So now, everyday I'm supposed to answer phone calls as they come in, respond to emails, etc, and holy hell am I struggling. I struggle with being focused on work, and then shifting focus to a phone call, and then having to shift back to work. I also struggle with some anxiety with answering the phone, as I don't really have all the answers like my boss would, and I'm worried that I'll mess up.

So every morning I come in, I have like 5-10 new emails, a couple of missed calls, and I'm supposed to deal with them. But it's hard to even tell if someone else has already responded, or which inquiries really need a response, stuff like that. And because I don't feel confident in this role yet, I struggle so badly to initiate these tasks. I honestly feel so overwhelmed by it.

When they first asked me to do this work, they said I could decide later down the line if this is something I'm good at and want to do. Which is great, except that now I feel like I'm letting down my boss (again, small company, it's not a regular heartless employee/employer relationship).

How do I tell my boss that I don't want to keep doing this work in a professional manner? Or do you have any tips on how to handle this sort of work? I only said yes in the first place because I feel like I should be able to do stuff like this.

The most interesting mechanic of sponsored survival is time.

So, i spent about 3 hours each morning this weekend running sponsored survival solo. I want to caveat this post that im excited for the possibility of a good pve mode in marathon, despite any criticism of this specific implementation. This feedback will be in the context of running this mode solo.

Frankly, i found sponsored survival to be boring as fuck. From my perspective, the mode removes the largest source of tension during a run- the other players- and doesnt do enough to make up for it. I do think they tried to add tension, but i dont think that their attempts were that effective in the end.

There are three main ways they tries to add tension to this mode: rooks, sponsor kits, and time.

First, rooks. Total failure. I’ve spent 10-12 hours in this mode, i’ve never seen a rook.

Second, sponsor kits. This one actually works, but not enough. The free kits are generally not very good, so it does force you to play more carefully until you can find more healing, or a shield, or a better gun, etc. The problem with the sponsor kits, as i see it, is that it basically forces you to play triage. Getting your health chunked in a single fight uses up basically all of your patch kits. You basically have to take triage in order to stand a chance, otherwise you simply run out of healing and die.

Finally, time. You only have 20 minutes in this mode. You’re playing triage- no movement abilities- and you have a sponsor kit- low heat capacity and agility, crappy healing and guns, no shield. So you move relatively slowly through the map. You have to avoid damage, and you have to keep your health up. You spend a lot of time in fights looking for cover, hiding, and healing up. It slows you down significantly.

So, i’ve been playing this mode to run priority contracts and to get loot to feed my worm. Which means every time i load in, i have 18 minutes to collect certs, hit towers and 5-cert boxes, and try to get my contract done. I have found that in a “perfect” run i get complete my contract, check every 5-cert box spawn location, and hit a tower or two in between. Most runs are not perfect though, which makes for interesting decision making.

For example, the tower at quarantine almost always sends you to greenhouse. So if i spawn at west gate, and my contract is at maintenance, or ai uplink, i often skip the bots here and skip the tower. Ill run through quarentine, and check the 5-cert box spawn. If it’s there, ill clear the bots and open it before i move on. Otherwise i skip everything and run straight to maintenance.

Whereas, say my contract wants me to go to greenhouse or bio. Ill lill the bots, hit the tower, and move east. Again, make sure i check the 5-cert box spawn first.

And every poi you enter is a repeat of this. You need to be efficient. You cant afford the time to double back to zones you’ve already been to. So there’s always a push/pull between your progress and the match timer.

Usually towards the end of the run, about 6 minutes left, ill have 10-15 certs, and ill have checked about half the map for box spawns. So you start making decisions. How can i maximize the value of my certs? Can i get 2 5-cery boxes done, or maybe only 1? If it’s only gunna be 1, which towers can i hit to make sure i have time to check the spawns? Did the anomaly spawn? Do i have time to do that, clean it, and use my certs? So on and so forth.

The time constraint by far creates the most interesting gameplay during a match. Every action you take takes time, and you want to complete your contract and come out with good loot to make it worth the 20 minutes.

For this reason, i think playing with time constraints in future pve modes could be very interesting.

For example, what if you spawned in with only 5 minutes on the clock? And each poi had a terminal to sets back the final exfil by 2-3 minutes. Forcing you to make decisions about which pois you hit, which profit opportunities you can do, and still get your contract done.

Or what if uesc resistance on the map increased over time, to the point that it became unwinnable if you lingered too long. Forcing you to make decisions about how long you stay on the map, or risk staying longer to complete more objectives?

Or what if there was some sort of time trial mode? Now you’re building loadouts with speed in mind. What kind of loadout would you make if you needed to move quickly, but still be strong enough to survive? What shell would you take? Yada yada.

Im curious to hear your thoughts.

Tldr: the time constraint on sponsored survive creates the most interesting gameplay on that mode. Bungie should consider experimenting more with time for future pve modes to add tension because pve inherently removes the tension that comes from other runners.

End of wipe in Marathon is a much better experience than in arc

This isnt meant to shit on arc, i played the hell out of it when it launched, and im sure ill check it out again sometime in the future.

Eta: we realllllly dont need to do the arc vs marathon player count debate. Both games are fun, both games have unique experiences, both are worth playing. I know i sorta started it but really i was just comparing the experience i had end of wipe with both games. The comparison is not a moral judgement on arc (or marathon) ffs lol

But wow did arc fumble the bag on their first expedition. For those who dont know, in arc you were rewarded skill points for the new season based on the value of your vault upon wipe. Which meant that instead of bringing in all your good gear, you had to hold onto everything unless you somehow had more than 5,000,000 credits in arc.

In marathon however, there is no reason to hold onto loot. The last week has been incredible. Im one of the lucky few who have had the chance to get compiler done. We didnt even think we’d get all the subroutines this season. But this week we got our vidmaster done and got all 6 compiler skins for our shells. And we’ve been running keys with random thirds and helping people with subroutines n stuff.

The codex entries are another huge part of this. They give us something to chase that isn’t loot which barely even matters anymore.

It’s a blast to run these crazy valuable kits to finish our last few challenges, find our last few collectibles, etc. (still need finish god will sort the dead, fuck that challenge lol). And im running all the shitty gold mods that i dont usually run when i sweat, and making weird builds to mess around with. Trying out all the different loot i acquired is so much fun.

Hopefully we keep getting more challenging titles and other codex entries for future seasons!
