This morning’s 5.5M offshore quake, as captured in Concordia

Picked up on a RaspberryShake SB in Concordia, with some very nice definition due to its early morning timing - no trucks on Columbia to mess with the trace.

Hey friends! Come hang out at Alberta Last Thursday tomorrow!

Hey friends! I’m Alex and, weather permitting, I vend at Last Thursday every month. I mostly sell rocks, plants, and my book, The Fork, which is an anarchist post-apocalyptic story set in Philadelphia.

This year i’m levelling up my game with a LOT of free fig and white oak trees. I’ll also have greengage plum, monkey puzzles, and all sorts of otherr indoor and outdoor plants for sale pretty cheap. I’ll also have some faceted gemstones that i dug and had cut for sale at wholesale prices, in addition to some dope knightia fossils from Wyoming, thundereggs, all sorts of fun stuff.

I’ll also be bringing my dobsonian telescope because the moon is visible in the evenings right now, and half-phase is one of the best times to look at it.

And — how could i forget, i’ll have some GIANT monstera vines up for sale, they’re so big i have to rent a truck to get them there, they’re won’t fit in my jeep anymore 😂😂😂

Last but not least i’ll have some one-winter trees for the first time available to the public. They are bacon and Mexicola daughters and have spent their entire lives outdoors and given no special treatment, $20 each or 2/$35 :)

And i’m only one vendor! There are like hundreds of cool folks there sharing their art. It’s a good time and it’s free!

See you Thursday!

Gorgeous 5.6 earthquake capture on a backyard seismograph

Got this lovely capture this morning of a 5.6 quake in Mendocino from my Raspberry Shake in Portland, Oregon . Look at that outstanding catch of the P and S waves, this is one of my absolute best captures.

Ordered junk silver, got a surprisingly clean Walking Liberty

I’m guessing it doesn’t really have a premium over spot but it was a nice surprise regardless. Since i’m so new to the hobby, any advice on what i should do with it? I’m guessing prolly not worth grading. TIA!

Mexicola Avocados

Hey there all my ‘cado enthusiasts! If you’ve never tried mexicolas you’re in for a treat, they’re a duck egg-sized variety with edible skin that tastes like aniseeed, and are perfect for sitting on the couch and pretending you’re prehistoric megafauna. They’re prolly my 3rd favorite variety after GEMs and Oro Negro.

I bring it up today because Miami Fruit currently has them in stock. I’m not affiliated with them, i just love to spread the gospel of the mexicola :). They’re spendy so if you splurge go for the large box, its twice as large as the small for only 25% more. You’ll be very happy you did. Mine’s already ordered and i can’t wait for them to come :).

Bloomsday at T.C. O’Leary’s

James Joyce’s marvellous and deeply frustrating novel Ulysses takes place over the span of one day, June 16th 1904. Every June 16th, Dublin becomes a giant literary festival to celebrate that remarkable novel, and we in Portland have a tiny version of it here ourselves.

Tom, the eponymous publican of TC O’Leary’s on Alberta, hosts a Bloomsday festival that is an entirely lovely experience. Everyone gathered with perfect pours of Guinness and g’n’t’s, spice bags, and pork rillettes that i brought because its the fancy version of potted meat, which is important in an early chapter of the tome, and we all took turns reading an excerpt of each chapter, in book order. And it all wound up with Carolyn, a wonderful woman and former Broadway star, singing us home with a lovely song.

Tom also hosts a Ulysses reading group every Wednesday, where we take turns reading passages out loud to each other and then bs-ing about what we just read. If you’ve ever been curious to try the book i can’t recommend it more highly, I failed at reading the book four different times and think I’m actually gonna finish it reading it this way.

Thanks for reading, and slainte!

Tenant came home from work today with the keyest of key dates Peace Dollar

Apparently a customer came in to trade for weed money so she snapped them up and when i looked i was like wait, that seems familiar…. Total score.

EDIT: No mint mark, Philly mint, score confirmed!

EDIT 2: a bunch of you are calling them fakes, what are you seeing that makes you think that? They look right to me and i can’t fathom anyone going to the fuss and bother of faking coins in such rough shape.

EDIT 3: they pass both the ping test and the magnet test so if they’re fakes they’re silver fakes, which seems unlikely, so just know in all your hearts that i’m having a hale and hearty belly laugh over here at y’all’s expense, please keep downvoting me you glorious mental patients, i love you and please never change.

EDIT 4: c’mon guys this is getting ridiculous. I have said multiple times that while i *think* they are real, i’m willing to believe that they might not be, and the next time i know i’ll be passing a pawn shop i’ll try to take them in for XRF. If it passes that, then i’ll send them to get graded if my tenant sells them to me. I don’t know what else you want from me, all these personal attacks, calling me arrogant and a troll… y’all need to slow your roll, some of y’all are toxic AF.

You folks finally got me

Yep i’ve been silver brainpilled, thanks so much for that (derogatory).

A humble beginning to a stack but a beginning nonetheless, though i am gonna carry some of the mercury dimes around to hand out as tips at bars.

Is metal detecting graveyards considered illegal or immoral?

I don’t even have a detector i’m just curious everyone’s thoughts, there are some pioneer cemeteries here in Portland that might be good targets.

This 5.7M earthquake off the north California coast might be my best backyard seismograph capture yet.

The quake happened around 3:30 this morning 498km from my Concordia backyard.

The machine is a RaspberryShake SB, it has a infrasound monitor built in so i can monitor and study noise pollution as well as earth movements. You can check it out, and the other 10 or so in our local network, here https://stationview.raspberryshake.org/#/?lat=45.56757&lon=237.36928&zoom=8.676&sta=R941E

But mostly I have it so I can complain about yet another run of California imports.

Citrus tree yellowing?

Hey folks! I’ve got this four year old Santa Teresa di Feminello lemon tree that’s been growing outdoors in a pot in my driveway in Portland. It gets about 3/4 sun in its current location and i water it every 3-4 days.

About a week ago it started yellowing and dropping leaves. I immediately gave it a megadose of liquid fish, calmag, and citrus fertilizer and it stabilized and stopped dropping leaves overnight, but it’s not greening up.

Anyone have any advice on what i might be able to give it to make it a happier tree? Thanks in advavnce!

Anyone want some summer savory?

I have to split my summer savory because while its tasty i only use it like twice a year, anyone want a clump?

I also have this desert king fig that i pit an air layer on four years ago and forgot about, which turned into a two-meter problem.

All free to a good home.

Mr. Corvidae, you have excellent taste in cinema

Also your apology is accepted but unnecessary, I was bemused by the absolutely incompetent driving of the six cars ahead of us, all of which were being driven by lively folks who should have their licenses immediately revoked.

I went to an amazing plant sale today!

I got to hit up an amazing plant sale today at Rare Plant Research in Oregon City, uh, Oregon, and brought home all these new babies! 😍

  1. Ipomea platensis
  2. Monadenium rubellium
  3. Scilla natatonsis
  4. Haemanthus humilis
  5. Haemanthus diformis
  6. Drimia robusta
  7. Tibouchina grandifolis
  8. Ah crap i missed this one
  9. Cissus tuberosa

I’d never heard of this nursery before this week and despite this astounding haul i spent almost $100 less than i thought i had, and could have easily spent 3x what I did. What an amazing day!

Back half pictures are of one of the parent tibouchina plants, and an amazing in-greenhouse bed of adenias and some other species.

Thanks for looking!
